[archetype] [import] hiiwaisei [3-12-6-4/complete]

Recommended Posts

An archetype made by a player in the east. I thought it was interesting so I spent the effort to translate it. I will of course make the necessary changes for it to be playable, hopefully. You can find the originals here.

The theme originates from Chinese mythology as well as Taoist tradition. The name of the archetype is derived from tradition that ancient governments had of giving proper respect to the celestial bodies and individuals; in the first few dynasties there was a government official that specifically carried out this task, which is what the "hiiwai" means (CH: mizhu). Simultaneously the phrase also means the act of performing such communication, which was seen as a secret and sacred rite, hence Secret Invocation (alternatively Secret Wish or Prayer). The Star is self-explanatory given the relevance of the celestial.

All notes provided by me, but you should thank Nai who made me do all this extra work :^)

[spoiler=Normal Monsters]秘祝星・墨 / Hiiwaisei - Sumi
Secret Invocation Star - Mo
Level 3 - WIND - Aqua - 150/2050
As the Jade Emperor swiftly commands, let ink be cast into the clouds and rise among the nine stars.

An inkstick commonly used in many Eastern cultures for calligraphy and traditional art. One of the Chinese Four Treasures of the Study, and has a long history of usage in China.

秘祝星・筆 / Hiiwaisei - Fude
Secret Invocation Star - Bi
Level 4 - WIND - Thunder - 1850/1050
A calligraphy pen, it produces the seal that gathers lightning and wards against evil.

Another member of the Four Treasures of the Study, this is your basic calligraphy ink brush. The reason writing was crucial was that simply calling it out to the heavens wasn't enough communication; treatises, or sometimes, commands, would be written and burnt in the rite to ensure communication arrived. The same kind of Taoist tradition that gives rise to ofuda.

秘祝星・硯 / Hiiwaisei - Suzuri
Secret Invocation Star - Yan
Level 6 - WIND - Rock - 2350/1550
An inkstone that combines the four elements to create thunderous sparks.

Required to use an inkstick, which had to be ground against one of these and water (sui, below) added to be usable as ink.

[spoiler=Effect Monsters]秘祝星・水 / Hiiwaisei - Sui
Secret Invocation Star - Shui
Level 3 - WIND - Aqua/Gemini - 250/1950
This card is treated as a Normal Monster while face-up on the field or in the Graveyard. While this card is a Normal Monster on the field, you can Normal Summon it to have it become an Effect Monster with this effect.
● Once per turn: You can target 1 other monster you control; that target and this card's levels each become their levels combined, then increase the ATK and DEF of all face-up monsters you control by 600.

This is just water.

秘祝星・丹朱口 / Hiiwaisei - Tanshuku
Secret Invocation Star - Danzhukou
Level 3 - WIND - Rock/Effect - 500/1000
This card cannot be used as Xyz Material, except for the Xyz Summon of a "Hiiwaisei" monster. You can Tribute this card: Special Summon up to 2 "Hiiwaisei" monsters from your Deck. You can only activate the effect of "Hiiwaisei - Tanshuku" once per turn.

"Danzhukou" translates to "Mouth of Danzhu". Danzhu is a deity, presiding over the mouth, called upon in one of the notable eight invocations of the Taoist tradition; the invocation is used to clear one's tongue and mouth and prepare oneself for the speaking of further invocations. Tanshuku calls more "Hiiwaisei" from the Deck.

秘祝星・甘露 / Hiiwaisei - Kanro
Secret Invocation Star - Ganlu
Level 3 - WIND - Aqua/Effect - 1200/1300
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material in your possession; Special Summon 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster from your Graveyard, except "Hiiwaisei - Kanro".

The name of another invocation in Taoist tradition, supposedly to ward against inflammation and soothe the mind against negative emotions. It could be effective in calling rain as well? I don't really know. Shares the same name as the Buddhist concept of amrita, but doesn't mean the same thing. "Ganlu" means something like "Sweet Nectar", similar meaning as ambrosia in terms of the word itself.

秘祝星・伝香仙 / Hiiwaisei - Denkousen
Secret Invocation Star - Incense-Bearing Immortal
Level 3 - WIND - Spellcaster/Effect - 1300/1200
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material in your possession to target 1 card on the field; return that target to its owner's hand.

A minor immortal mentioned in Taoist invocations, a child that will assist in the bearing of incense during a rite.

秘祝星・聖獣石 / Hiiwaisei - Seijuuseki
Secret Invocation Star - Holy Beast Stone
Level 3 - WIND - Rock/Effect - 1600/1000
Once per turn, if this card would be destroyed (by battle or card effect), it is not destroyed. If this card is sent to the Graveyard as an Xyz Material: Target 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster in your Graveyard; add that target to your hand.

A stone belonging or representing one of the five cardinal holy beasts; figures I am sure all of you will know quite well. Known in Japanese as Suzaku, Genbu, Byakkou, and Seiryuu, plus the yellow dragon in the middle.

秘祝星・砂 / Hiiwaisei - Suna
Secret Invocation Star - Vermilion Sand
Level 4 - WIND - Rock/Gemini - 1900/600
This card is treated as a Normal Monster while face-up on the field or in the Graveyard. While this card is a Normal Monster on the field, you can Normal Summon it to have it become an Effect Monster with this effect.
● Once per turn: You can target 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster in your Graveyard: Special Summon that target. A monster Special Summoned by this effect cannot attack.

Relatively sure this in fact refers to the cinnabar that Taoists would sometimes use as a complement to ink, especially during ceremonies such as when beginning an altar rite.

秘祝星・浄心 / Hiiwaisei - Joushin
Secret Invocation Star - Cleansing Heart
Level 4 - WIND - Spellcaster/Effect - 1800/900
You can discard 1 card: Xyz Summon 1 Rank 4 "Hiiwaisei" Xyz Monster from your Extra Deck, using this card as the Xyz Material. You can only activate the effect of "Hiiwaisei - Joushin" once per turn.

Yet another common mantra, this time one with similar purpose to the one mentioned in the notes for Danzhukou; this one is, as the name hints at, for cleansing and calming the heart. (Invocation and mantra are interchangeable terms.)

秘祝星・落幡星 / Hiiwaisei - Rakubansei
Secret Invocation Star - Pennant-Closing Star
Level 4 - WIND - Fairy/Effect - 1800/1400
During a turn this card is Summoned successfully: You can Special Summon 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster from your hand. If this card is sent to the Graveyard as an Xyz Material of a "Hiiwaisei" Xyz Monster: You can send 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster from your Deck to the Graveyard. You can only use each effect of "Hiiwaisei - Rakubansei" once per turn.

The act of closing the pennant is a stage of proceedings near the end of a Taoist ceremony, to indicate that the communication is about to cease. It is immediately followed by the actual sending-off.

秘祝星・土地神 / Hiiwaisei - Tochishin
Secret Invocation Star - Land and Soil God
Level 4 - WIND - Rock/Effect - 1600/1000
Once per turn: You can target 2 "Hiiwaisei" monsters in your Graveyard; shuffle them into the Deck, then draw 1 card. If this card is sent to the Graveyard as an Xyz Material of a "Hiiwaisei" Xyz Monster: You can add 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster from your Deck to your hand.

A minor immortal, thought to be possessed by every locality, which would bless its inhabitants with the fruits of the earth as well as wealth and well-being. Often thought of as a righteous and kind immortal, very in touch with the people. Has another alternative name which denotes his elderly status.

秘祝星・七玄星 / Hiiwaisei - Shichigensei
Secret Invocation Star - Seven Mysterious Stars
Level 4 - WIND - Rock/Effect - 1400/1800
You can detach 1 Xyz Material from an Xyz Monster you control to Special Summon this card (from your hand). A "Hiiwaisei" Xyz Monster that was Xyz Summoned using this monster as Xyz Material gains this effect.
● If this card is Xyz Summoned: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Hiiwaisei" monster from your Deck. You cannot Special Summon other monsters the turn you activate this effect, except from the Extra Deck.

The Big Dipper, famous in history and popular culture. Actually this card was supposed to be named after their mother who is a prominent figure in Taoist tradition but I really didn't like the Japanese translation of the name (regardless of how accurate it was) so I just ditched it in favor of mentioning the Big Dipper itself.

秘祝星・蓬莱仙 / Hiiwaisei - Houraisen
Secret Invocation Star - Penglai Immortal
Level 4 - WIND - Fairy/Effect - 500/1000
When this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can discard 1 card, then target 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target, then you can increase or decrease this card's Level by 1. You can only use the effect of "Hiiwaisei - Houraisen" once per turn.

A generic immortal from Penglai, which is supposedly an island where many immortals reside, alongside four others; but this one is the most famous. Hourai is the Japanese name for it.

秘祝星・破棄人 / Hiiwaisei - Hakinin
Secret Immortal Star - Reversing Man
Level 6 - WIND - Warrior/Effect - 2300/1800
If you control 2 or more "Hiiwaisei" monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). Once per turn: You can discard 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster; Special Summon 1 "Hiiwaisei" Normal Monster from your Graveyard.

Honestly I have no idea. From what I gather this might refer to a less notable rite which involves ... the usage of light sources in a ritual that both illuminates the heavens and the hells, and the name of the card itself originally was "Hell-Destroying Man" so there you go.

[spoiler=Xyz Monsters]秘祝星・天堂旅 / Hiiwaisei - Tendouryo
Secret Invocation Star - Tour of Paradise
Rank 3 - WIND - Fairy/Xyz/Effect - 1300/2000
2 Level 3 WIND monsters
Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; this card gains 1000 ATK and DEF, also it cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. These changes last until the end of the turn. Once per turn, when another effect is activated that would detach an Xyz Material from this card: Draw 1 card.

Exactly what it says on the tin. No hidden meanings here.

秘祝星王・神荼 / Hiiwaiseiou - Shinzu
Secret Invocation Star King - Shenshu
Rank 3 - WIND - Fairy/Xyz/Effect - 2100/1600
2 Level 3 monsters
This card gains 200 ATK for each Xyz Material attached to it. Once per turn, if an Xyz Material is detached from this card: You can target 1 card your opponent controls; destroy that target. A monster that was Xyz Summoned by using this monster as Xyz Material gains this effect:
● If this card is Xyz Summoned: Target 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target in face-up Defense Position, but its effects are negated and it is destroyed at the end of the turn.

One of the god-men in ancient mythology, originally a subordinate of Chiyou but surrendered to the Yellow Emperor and was assigned to rule over the underworld as one of its immortals. Has had a talent for catching and warding off demons and evil spirits, about which there are many stories, which is why he is also worshipped as a door god, and stands on the left. Has a brother is named Yulei. His second effect can get a copy of his brother.

秘祝星・九曜星 / Hiiwaisei - Kyuuyousei
Secret Invocation Star - Nine Dazzling Stars
Rank 4 - WIND - Spellcaster/Xyz/Effect - 1800/2700
2 Level 4 "Hiiwaisei" monsters
If this card with Xyz Material would be destroyed, detach 1 Xyz Material from it instead. If a "Hiiwaisei" monster is sent to the Graveyard while attached to this card as an Xyz Material: You can Special Summon it.

The Chinese name for the navagraha, an astrological concept imported from India during the Tang dynasty and producing great influence in the astrological systems of East Asia. Slightly nerfed to prevent an annoying combo of Kyuuyousei and Ikurui.

秘祝星王・郁塁 / Hiiwaiseiou - Ikurui
Secret Invocation Star King - Yulei
2 Level 4 "Hiiwaisei" monsters
Rank 4 - WIND - Fairy/Xyz/Effect - 2400/1700
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material in your possession; for the rest of this turn, all "Hiiwaisei" monsters you control gain 400 ATK and DEF. If this card is sent to the Graveyard by your opponent (by battle or effect): You can target 1 Rank 4 or lower "Hiiwaisei" Xyz Monster in your Graveyard, except "Hiiwaiseiou - Ikurui"; Special Summon that target, then attach this card to it as an Xyz Material.

The brother of Shenshu, see above. Has similar history and function (they are brothers after all) but occupies the right door. It is to be noted that often door decorations are also accompanied by a tiger, but I'm not too sure why this is. He can get his brother back, isn't that neat.

秘祝星・九字仙 / Hiiwaisei - Kujisen
Secret Invocation Star - Nine Character Immortal
Rank 6 - WIND - Fairy/Xyz/Effect - 2600/1800
2 Level 6 monsters
You can also Xyz Summon this card using a Rank 4 or lower "Hiiwaisei" monster you control as Xyz Material. (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; this turn, if this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent.

The "nine character" part refers to what Japan calls "kuji-kiri", but has a much longer history in China of being the prefix associated with a large number of secret arts designed to enhance military, martial, and Taoist prowess; a kind of self-protection technique, if you will. The "-kiri" part comes from one of the characters being misheard/understood when the practice first passed to Japan and was copied, where the character for "array" was thought of as the character for "break", so here we are.

秘祝星神・聃 / Hiiwaiseishin - Dan
Secret Invocation Star God - Dan
Rank 7 - WIND - Spellcaster/Effect - 2800/2000
2 Level 7 monsters
During your Main Phase 2, you can also Xyz Summon this card by discarding 1 card and using a Rank 4 or higher "Hiiwaisei" Xyz Monster as Xyz Material, except "Hiiwaiseishin - Dan". (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; this turn, any effect that has this card as a target is negated. If this card is destroyed by an opponent's card (by battle or effect): You can target 1 Rank/Level 6 or lower "Hiiwaisei" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target, but its effects are negated.

"Dan" is the style name of Laozi, the creator of Taoism. As the highest Rank monster of the archetype I think it is quite appropriate.

[spoiler=Green and Purple]秘祝喚星丹
Secret Invocation Starcall
Normal Spell
If you control no monsters: Special Summon 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster from your Deck with 500 or less ATK. You cannot Special Summon monsters the turn you activate this card, except "Hiiwaisei" monsters. You can only activate 1 ~ per turn.

The actual name's last character means medicine, essentially; a number of Taoist practitioners were amateur chemists, and attempted to create medicine that would cure sicknesses and provide immortality.

道転儀典
Sacrificial Altar Rites
Normal Spell
Add 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster with 1000 DEF or less from your Deck to your hand. You cannot Special Summon monsters the turn you activate this card, except "Hiiwaisei" monsters.

It's a ceremony, isn't that great. That's what the card's name means (lit. Taoist Altar Ceremony).

星辰歩調
Celestial Cadence
Target 1 face-up Xyz Monster you control; detach all Xyz Materials from that target, and if you do, draw cards equal to the number of Xyz Materials detached. You can only activate 1 ~ per turn.

During a ceremony, a practitioner often has a certain way of walking which corresponds to the constellations.

五方列陣
Five-Cardinal Arrayal
Normal Trap
Detach 2 Xyz Materials from anywhere on the field, then target 1 "Hiiwaisei" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target, but its effects are negated and it is destroyed at the end of the turn.

Calls upon the holy beasts of the five cardinals.
