Wahrheit
Many of the people who have engaged in activities that emitted greenhouse gases are our distant ancestors; they are no longer around to pay. And most of the victims of climate change are not yet born. If the United States pays “climate reparations” to India, for example, the money will be paid in large part by people who are not directly responsible for global warming to people who have not yet been hurt by global warming. The real victims will be future Indians — people living many decades or centuries hence. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-theory/wp/2016/01/08/when-it-comes-to-climate-change-payback-isnt-enough/
Dad
But moving forward, it does make sense that those who produce greenhouse gases should be required to pay for the harm in proportion to the magnitude of their activity. This is different from saying that people should be punished for their behavior from the past. Sums up my thoughts. The article is pretty well written. It takes a common sense, moral obligation approach (even slightly so) but highlights that we are all responsible for controlling green house emissions. But the fact that Global Warming is even still being disputed makes that very difficult to do. "It's a scam by the government!" Let me hook up this coal generator to your house. Let me know how long you stay cool and refreshed fam.
Wahrheit
We had a hypo about a coal plant on our CivPro test, haha. Policy question about whether to allow a family with asthmatic young children to file for preliminary relief against a coal plant slated to open nearby. What really makes me upset is that much of the rhetoric is centered on individual cutting back, when it's agriculture and other industrial practices that cause the most waste.
