Reddit Stories! FF7 Edition

So basically, I'm looking in on one of the reddit pages for the new FF7 remake. Me personally, I think that pretty much everything about it looks good so far. Only complaint I have is that Cloud looks sick. I don't mean sick as in cool, I mean sick as in he's struggling with dysentery or something. Guy just looks unwell. Anyways, I started noticing a pattern. Most of the people who don't like it seem like they're just butthurt nostalgia fanboys. The most common phrase I'm seeing is "Final Fantasy is dead" too. I dunno what anyone else thinks, but if FF died at any point it was during the FF13 era. You know, when Square constantly tried to push Lightning despite fans begging them not to? So I added my two cents, and basically said that FF7 was dated and needed an update and that ATB isn't a very good system (this is a different story though) and the amount of blatant fanboy defense I got from simply critiquing a game that came out almost 20 years ago was downright laughable. Honestly, all I did was say this game wasn't perfect and this was the response:

 

"Just hearing you say that, you sound just like these stupid funking haters of FF7 who are the same people who constantly sheet on FF7 and try to make it look bad as much as they can . Their also the same people who are all of a sudden excited about this remake when SE decided to kill the legacy of FF7 by dumbing it down, streamlining and casualizing it just to appeal to the wrong crowd who are not even the loyal fans that asked for a remake for years. The people who are excited about this bullshit are actually haters of FF7 and the turn based genre yet their also the same people that rage about how superior FF6 is which ironically is a turn based strategy game. You know what funk you, i don't give a funk what you think about FF7 because me and a lot of fans love it."

 

All I can really do is laugh at this. It's like the biggest case of fanboyism I've ever seen. I don't even dislike FF7, I actually think it's better than any of the FF's that came before it. I just don't think that the game is as great as nostalgia tells people. This continues for a while, mostly with me just telling him to chill out until the guy just rages at literally everyone in the forum. 

The main point here was, why do people get that defensive about small criticisms? All it really does is hurt people's view on the thing their defending. It's honestly not a wonder that so many people think FF fans are weird nerds when we get people like that going ballistic over someone else not thinking it's perfect. This obviously applies to all fandoms, but I think FF's fans are probably the only ones I know of that will frequently sheet on their beloved franchise for the silliest reasons.

FF7's battle system wasn't unique anyway.

 

It was introduced in 4, and was the standard through 9.

 

The learning system was great, even though it just took FF5's job system and basically let you slap multiple jobs onto a character at once, and 6 already introduced Limit Breaks.

 

FF7 didn't really add anything new to the series besides 3D graphics and Tetsuya Nomura's crappy character designs.

 

Still fun though.

It's funny cause I actually only played a bit of FF7 but I did play the strange Dirge of Cerberus game. So I can say that it added Yuffie and Vincent and that makes me happy.

Still on the opinion 6 is better than 7, personally.

 

Though yeah, Final Fantasy Tactics is the best game in the series. FFTA and FFTA2 is not as good tho.

Well after looking back at the thread and seeing some more of what he said, I think he might actually just be insane. He's kinda just sporadically yelling nonsense at people while trying his hardest to look smarter than everyone in the thread. This is the last thing I saw before I left.

This seems like you are just doing it only because i said "Kingdom Hearts is really not that great and i'm not a fan of it anymore and Dissidia is very repetitive"

 

Mind you, nobody in the thread has even mocked him for it. The most anyone did was say he was an over zealous fanboy, which he clearly is. Nobody even said they disliked it. Not only that, but this comment was directed at me, and I didn't even say anything abou KH or Dissidia. Sooooo yeah I think he might have just actually been schizophrenic or something.

I agree. I enjoyed FF8 more mostly because of how goofy some of the plot portions were, like catching Rinoa in space and Laguna awkwardly hitting on Julia.

 

Also, it's funny you mention the combat being simple, because my brother and I were playing it a while back and found out you can get through most of the game without even lifting your finger off the confirm button. I mean, I like FF7, but it's obviously dated as all s***. The game looks like it was made in Minecraft for f***s sake, and the mechanics are just reused assets. It's still good, but like many things, it's not as great as our nostalgia glasses make it look.
