leafbladie
Inspired by Rank10YGO’s Legacy of the Worthless… well it had to come sooner or later, my retrains of the “Genex” monsters. “Genex” have 42 cards, and are divided into 3 sub-archetypes of “Genex” “R-Genex” and “Genex Ally”. Too slow even for the format they were introduced in, they were probably Konami’s biggest failures in making an archetype. Well, better get on with it. So going to level with you here, I really don’t have much idea on how to make Synchro archetypes, other than having SS effects, ways to recover resources easier, and seeing as there are so many of them, I might’ve overdone it a few of them. If you think so, please tell me if there’s anything broken, or in need of fixing. I did change some of the monster’s Levels so that they’d function better into making their Synchros, like making “Genex Ally Reliever” a Level 6 so that you can go into “R-Genex Locomotive” easier. Some cards I didn’t touch were the R-Genex core of “Genex Power Planner”, “R-Genex Accelerator”, “Crusher”, “Magma”, and “Turbo”, which when combined with “Ultimate Offering” allowed them to vomit out Synchros with extreme speed. I did decide to make a Field Spell in reference to that though, which helps boost consistency for the archetype. I also didn’t touch “Genex Ally Axel” since its effect is actually pretty good, though some of them I didn’t even bother addressing, like “Genex Ally Bellflame”. I made some of them into Pendulums that give buffs to the monsters, and allow them to go off easier. I also intended that you might want to possibly splash some of these into other Attribute based decks of course, like “Mermails” and such. “Genex Ally” were a bit difficult to fit in, but I think I made some adjustments to help them work out. Well without further ado, here they are: [spoiler=Main Deck Monsters (21 Cards)] Genex RecycledMachine-Type/DARK/Level 1/ATK 200/DEF 400Once per turn: You can send 1 “Genex” monster from your Deck to the Graveyard; this card’s Attribute and Level becomes the monster’s until the End Phase. leafbladie
Time warp. Fixed Remote so that it's a Tuner. Small note, you could also tech in Elemental Mistress Doriado and Pre-Prep to get a bit more milage out of your Genex Ally Synchro monsters.Maybe I should remove the Genex Tuner requirement for some of them though. Dova
Recycle is not really what I would call a massive boost, considering Genex currently have little to no Graveyard play, but if the rest of your support are of the same level a double mill combined with Atribute, Level and even Tuner status modulation could definitely be a major thing. Even now, the fact that it is a 141 target means this card is easily accessible.Overseer certainly adds to the Graveyard play, not allowing for the archetype to be too spammy but combines well with the searching and said milling. If the rest of the support is of this level, it certainly doesn't need to bring from the deck.Solid provides draw power with another way for those Genex to go into the Graveyard, both of which problems they have had (although the latter isn't really something they have needed until now). I'm guessing the DARK treatment is for splashing in terms of Synchro Summoning (maybe something to do with the allyness), and there's nothing wrong with it, but I just think that instantly being able to access two attributes with one cards sort of loses the archetype's theme and need for modulation. Can't really fault it, though, the HOPT is fine.Remote is simply easy access for controller and extra material for a Synchro Summon. It's a neat idea to buff the speed of the archetype, considering most other effects activate on a Normal Summon for the rest of the archetype. Retrains manages to avoid the problem of putting the old cards to shame, while still making good cards.Undine has a whole bunch of Deck play. It is basically a +1 and deck thins by 2. Again, there's nothing inherently wrong with this, but I'm starting to see a bit too much power, especially as this card has no HOPT. No changes required...yet.Now, Worker is eating more into your hand material than into your deck, and I'm okay with that. It's a good thing to get into the Graveyard to allow for speed with the rest of the archetype, but the first effect is a little weak. We would be seeing this card in the new and improved deck, but not at 3. 2 at most. That isn't a problem, as there shouldn't be completely power cards making up the entire archetype, and while a few MD monsters would obviously have to be dropped, this means you aren't running the best ones at 3 and missing out 10 or something.Searcher is easy mill, set, or even discard material, allowing for quick search. Can't search the whole archetype, but it can search most of the good ones so there's that. Combined with Recycled, you can plus really well. Not much to say, simple card, it works and is needed for Graveyard play. Probs at 3.Oops, missed Gaia. Allows for easy protection, extra Summoning material, and more protection in the Graveyard. Two issues with this card in regards to OCG, though. First off, does the first effect work only with 1 monster or monster(s)? Secondly, I don't know how prominent "except this one" is today, but it seems simpler to me to just say "Other "Genex" monsters..." . Of course, you may not be wrong, and I may not be right, but it just seemed shorter to me. Control only 1 seems fine, and the Summoning condition only allows for one at a time, so no other problems there.Crusher is an interesting take on Attribute modulation, and one I quite like. Although it can’t change it’s own Attribute, if you find a way to change it (Genex, duh) you’ll be able to respond to most if not all scenarios. On the plus side half of all cards are dark so you won’t have the modulate most of the time.Blastfan is interesting, as it both allows for an adjustment for level, which may or may not be wanted, in exchange for a search. And in a Synchro archetype, you will have to play carefully around this, trying to balance whether you want it or the search. However, I do wish it activated as part of the effect not as a cost, as it can be a buff and your opponent can’t respond with Veiler to prevent the level changing.Volcannon also involves Level modulation, with a whole bunch of plusses. Another definite 3, as it only activates while face-up on the field as opposed to a trigger, it thins your deck by 1 and gets you a FIRE in the grave, and allows you to search and change the level. I really like how you’re combining the Synchro Summoning with the strength of the archetype; they do feel synergic.Ultimum really threw me. Neither of its effects have restrictions, which allows for easy late/mid game plays. It basically Synchro Summons instantly if you have a Tuner to normal summon and then brings out either the tuner you just used or another card you had in your Graveyard. Fortunately the first effect kinda hurts the second effect, or else we might have more problems than would be good, and considering this is Synchro rather than Xyz, the last effect doesn’t really hurt too much. Also the fact that so far your support doesn’t have many ways of bringing back level 4 genex.Furnace is just Level 5 fuel, which combines with the Level 4 + 1 effects you have going on to R5 easily. Simple card you’ll also run at 3.Reliever is also easy access for a Level 6 monster to Sync with, but seems to be a simply slightly weaker version of Furnace. I was expecting it to have an effect that returns a Genex to the hand, hence Reliever in the name, but this fits with the OG, I suppose. Easy to S10 with Furnace, considering the MD monsters level modulate to 5 a lot, so perhaps actually give this card an add?Chemisterer’s Pendulum effect doesn’t seem great on the surface, but combined with the Attribute modulation of the Monster in the archetype basically allows them to negate purely against your opponent’s monster effects. Good way to fit into the lore and make a good effect. Monster effect wise, interesting take on allowing it to actually be reused but not be Pendulum Summoned. Interesting how there is a Fusion Requirement in what it can be used for, as I don’t really see how you would Fusion Summon with this card (unless there is a Fusion in the ED I haven’t looked at yet). The attribute modulation builds into the theme, and isn’t too usable, so kudos. Shame it only Summons when Pend Summoned this way, but I guess you were taking a leaf out of the new Tuner’s book.Changer has a simple pend effect, but the monster effect is really interesting. It’s sort of non-targeting destruction, which is a niche market when it come monsters which this has an effect on. I mean, most monsters are fine with being destroyed, and quite a few monsters which have targeting protection want to be destroyed (looking at you, kozmo) or are protected from destruction already.Doctor’s pend effect...whoa. Even if you aren’t playing Pendulum Genex, you would have this card at 3 merely to have face-up on the field. Replenish any Genex that goes bye bye? That’s a major effect, considering you do have monsters without HOPT and you mill monsters, so I would suggest putting a restriction on that. I mean, this also works during your opponent’s turn, so you can always replenish your field. Perhaps limit it to only Genex Summoning the turn you activate the effect? It combos well with itself, seeing as you basically Summon the discarded monster with its monster effect with its pendulum effect, and then let the monster effect resolve, so there’s that, but I would suggest HOPT on the monster effect, as it can be Pend Summoned and it is already being run at 3.Looking briefly ahead at Army, and with all honesty I think the Doctor-Turbine scale is the best one, granting a search upon a successful Synchro Summon, and, if you haven’t sent a Genex to the Graveyard yet somehow, you also get a SS with that Synchro Summon, allowing for ANOTHER Synchro Summon. Nothing really bad, as the speed of today’s meta could easily handle this, but it works, so that’s something. Main effect is not something to be worried about, but level modulation does help the archetype, and the fact that the ATK gain can stack makes it a little more worthwhile than it normally would be. Good card.Army is by no means a bad card, as it helps with removal, something the retrains so far lack for the most part, but it doesn’t do much else. Next.Solar’s burn effect doesn’t seem that big, but with the rest of the retrains you have provided that burn is serious. I would suggest lowering it to 300 due to the discarding, re-special summoning and so on you have going on. SSing provides a wall, so that’s neat, and it allows you to technically double Pendulum summon with the tribute effect. HOPT means you can’t abuse it, so that’s a plus.Mass Production is a great card. Much faster speed, even without too much searching, but a search granted on destruction, fitting with the theme of R-Genex, actually something to do with R-Genex, I can’t fault it. Great idea for a Field Spell!I love how you’ve changed the Summoning requirements for most of the Synchros. Instead of requiring and Earth monster, they are at their best when used with an EARTH monster. Geo is a neat wall, only problem is the fact that it changes into a beatstick as a cost. Perhaps just but an “and if you do” instead of the colon?Hydro isn’t the strongest, due to battle effects really taking a hit in the modern meta, but I say that they’re in for a comeback! Level 6 3.3k monster that helps you swarm and gain LP? Yes, it can be easily taken care off, but in situations where you can use it I’m sure you would. I would suggest just removing the “to the Graveyard” clause, so it can actually have an effect on Pendulums ^^Your Doriado suggestion is interesting, but taking out 9 cards for that engine probably won’t buff the archetype by as much as the other monsters you’ve made already can. Regardless, Triarm’s load of effects are certainly a sight to see, filling many different niches and all incredibly useful...even the last one, when combined with attribute modulation can be quite the killer. Attribute Ragnazero amirite?Windmill’s Spell/Trap effect either needs OPT or the first effect needs to target. Considering it’s Level 7, it’s pretty easy to tech into a Level 4 WIND deck by just placing a Genex Controller to be Summoned via unexpected Dai or the like. Combine that with the genericness of the effect...perhaps HOPT on both effects.Triforce’s first 2 effects are fine, great actually, but the last one...I can’t remember seeing any Graveyard attribute modulation, meaning this effect is only good once with LIGHT monster sent to the Graveyard by this card (I can’t remember a whole bunch of LIGHT cards), and this card is then absurdly good against LIGHT decks. While that does fit in lore-wise, I don’t really know how to change it to be more balanced and fair. Why not just change it into LIGHT attribute modulation, like all face-up monsters your opponent controls are treated as LIGHT monsters and in their Graveyard?Thermal is looking at a 1300 ATK boost at least on Summon with a 1k burn, so that’s neat. The last burn effect on destruction does fit, but I feel it should be sacrificed for a little more monster protection. You so far have a whole bunch of speed, but the bosses have little to no staying power. This might even be an OTK archetype at this point, idk. But yeah, while you can leave the massive ATK gain and burn, unless you want to change the strategy to OTK I would suggest making it a little more defensive.Locomotion steals a monster and lets you conduct your Battle Phase. I mean, the card says you can only use it sometimes, but most of your monsters are DARK so it’s almost guaranteed if you are bringing this guy out you are grabbing a monster and can attack with. No problems, because a Level 9, not too high stats, and that’s pretty much it...wait nevermind make it target it has to target non-targeting taking control is bad as plz no.I now know a little more about Genex, so thanks for that. Anyways, it mostly fits into the lore, even if it is a little all over the place when look at as a whole. Nice work, and nice retrains!
leafbladie
Nice, thank you for your review, I'll get to work on buffing and strengthening certain effects, and trying to vary it up a bit. Your suggestion's for "Genex Doctor" also sounds like a great idea, I thought its effect was also a bit strong, but yeah, making it so that it limits you to only SS'ing Genex monsters would work perfectly. Thanks again! Edit: Bit unsure of something, should I have the Genex Ally gain their DARK Attribute while on the field, and have their Attribute stay as is when anywhere else, or swap them? The first makes it so they can be dumped by their effects in certain decks, and their splashability in other attribute based decks, while the second make Allure more alive.
