What's a render?

Recommended Posts

This has always confused/bothered me. That's, in all honesty, not what a 'render' is to be perfectly honest. What most people on the internet believe to be a 'render' is, in all actuality, just an 'image' or a 'crop.' What I believe this to be is one person or group of persons misusing a word so much that popular opinion shifts to where the incorrect usage is acceptable. It's similiar to how the words 'hacker' and 'cracker' have been misused over the years and how the two words, to the majority of people, are interchangable. As widely acceptable, at this point, as both practices are in the world...that does not make them correct.

A 'render' is a 3-D rendering of an object or image. It's impossible, due to forum restrictions, to show you an actual 'render' but the best I can do is a screenshot I did a while back of an actual 'render' I created.

This is a rendering I did of The Green Lantern(Kyle Rayner to be more specific). To be more precise, this is a screenshot of a render from it's various angles. You see, an actual render can be turned and repositioned because it's a 3d object. I do, however, appologize that(in this picture) the edges came out weird on this one. The actual render has very smooth edges. As I previoulsy stated, what most people refer to as a "render" is actually a "crop" or just an "image" that's had some erasework done to it. This informative is not meant to be an attack against any one person. It's more of my wasteful attempt to correct the widely acceptable misuse of a word. This concludes my pet-peave based mini-rant. angel.gif
