[align=center] How to Make a Unique Card

I am writing this hoping that random newbies will read and learn ^_^

Step 1-[Concept]

-Think of a concept that you wanna work off of, albeit a theme you've seen on a card made before like "Ancient Gears" or a member created card.

-Then think of an idea on how you want the effect to carry out, ie) What happens when, where and the various unique rulings that may [/url]come with your card. This part is critical, otherwise your card cannot work and will wind up an utter disaster.

-Combine how you work in the concept and how it works to create a smooth effect. Don't make it so that it just seems like 3 or 4 effects meshed into one card. It would be nice to make it seem like one complete effect. This is what makes it unique and not just to see what you can do, but test yourself.

Step 2- [image]

"I know this part does not seem important but trust me it is just as much part of the card as a concept is. You can skip it if you are just making a Written Card and anything inside this that regards an image".

-Find an Image that matches your concept, and try to be as accurate to the concept as possible. If your Image does not look like the concept your card will seem incomplete and again, rushed.

-If you are unable to work the Image that you want into your concept, work your concept around the Image. If you do it this way though, your card will be much more complete and more unique because you took the time to adjust it appropriately.

-Depending on how proud you are of the concept you may want to add a holo sheet or some fancy effect to your image. This shows that you cared for what you created and have made it to reflect your appreciation on its creativity.

Step 3-[balance]

-Now you combine your overall effect and Image to decide the Type, ATK/DEF, Level or Spell Speed. Depending on the type of card you are making.

-Adjust accordingly to your concept and make sure the card isn't overpowered. You decide this by knowing how to compensate or giving equal terms on its pros and cons. This can be done without prior knowledge of the official TCG but do try to find a card with a similar effect to your card as this will help achieve overall balance.

-Do make sure that the Type of the card is similar to one shown on the image. You dont want a Dragon looking image look have a Beast Type or an image of a Orc have a Fairy Type.

Step 4-[Official Card Grammar|OCG]

-Please make sure that your cards do not have "This monster attacks every monster with its claws and eats your opponents life points using its laser beam". Make the card seem like it is actually in the TCG and your card is real.

-Proper English grammar is essential as most members on this forum share that common language. Although having English in your own language format would be nice, in order to make it legible you would have to know proper grammar anyway.

-Be sure to capitalize possessive words and card names or effects when writing the formal effect. Use quotation marks when specifying specific card names.

As I myself am not perfect at OCG I will end it here.

[align=center]How to Utilize Subtypes and Archetypes

Subtypes and Archetypes are generally used in replace of having to change a standard type. Good examples would be:

Elemental Hero= Archetype
Toon= Subtype

An Archetype is a Type Generally Associating with a specific series of cards that are meant to be used a deck focused around that particular idea. They are also only found in the name of a card rather than type box.

A Subtype is a Type generally associating with a group of cards that have similar effects. Usually the first 2-3 sentences in an effect explains what this particular Subtype does. They are also only found in the Effect box where it mentions what the formal type is.

For the sake of being more specific:

Subtype:
Warrior/ {Toon}/ Effect
Warrior/ {Toon}

Archetype:
{Elemental Hero} Sparkman
{Destiny Hero} Defender

~Card Effect Types

List Effects

~These are effects that include severe list types on the effect. And can very in general text. But have a sort of dependency to them, thereby ruining the card as a whole. And are more popularly used in the Card Contest section of the forum.

They may also have a lot of "Ifs" that are at 3 or more. This makes it harder to read and diminishes the overall appeal of the card, forcing eye stops and what have you. It also extends it beyond the "flow" point, (which I will explain later).

The following is one of the main List Effects that generally ruin a card and make it very unappealing due to the nature that every effect in this card is forced out and not thought.

Once per turn, if one of the blah is on the field, you may activate one of the following effects:
-DARK: blah blah blah
-LIGHT: blah bleh blah
-FIRE: multitude blah
-WATER: excess blah
-WIND: bounce blah
-EARTH: special summon blah

The next is a Listy effect that includes an overkill of the word "if" thereby forcing the effect further. And ruining the card as a whole.

When this card is summoned, this happens. If blah blah occurs, discard one card to blah the card and negate it. If blah occurs, you may tribute this card to add one blah to your hand. If blah blah, blech puke happens...

Do you see why that effect is unappealing? If not you do not see the forced dependency that the card creates, thus ruining it altogether.

Summoning Effects

~ These are effects that occur on how a card is summoned. Albeit the standard 3 tribute or otherwise. But always are the same, and ruin a card in a forced attempt for it to look good. These effects should only be used in Any Other Cards or Pop Culture Cards as the lack creativity but alter balance well in those areas. Yet still these effects are bland and lack knowledge and creativity.

Dependency Effects

~While this term will be used by me a lot, it does deserve its own category. These effects usually require one or more cards to activate, thus using up more space and making the card seemingly more unique because of this. Examples are rare and unlikely but I do see these from time to time and are a huge no-no.

More types that seem to flux? Get back to me on that :P and I will write up on them etc...

Up next, Image usage and tricky effect text etc...

*Update- due to forum glitches with the extensive code. Me creating a card with it has been removed. Please PM me for that info.

I am quite proud of my cards, but only a few have holos. I don't think a holo is the only way to show how proud you are, or how much work you did. In fact, most holos I see make the card look bad....

As for the tut, it's simple and to the point, but effective so far. Looking forward to reading the finished product ;)

no it isnt but i find it a nice touch to the overall card itself. similar to the cherry on an ice cream, doesnt really affect the actual taste or anything.. it just adds a sense of accomplishment for those who want it.
