I wanted Ohhal’s mechanics to represent the glowing red fissures visible across its body instead of making it another generic boss with an omni-negate. Ohhal consumes two DARK Dragons to summon itself and gains power from the Dragons that have been banished.

Its main mechanic revolves around Rift Counters. Whenever Ohhal protects itself or forces its body to perform another attack, another fissure opens in its armor, causing it to lose 600 ATK. This makes its power self-consuming: it can be highly threatening when first summoned, but every effect permanently weakens it.

The targeting protection was intentionally limited to effects that target Ohhal itself, meaning non-targeting removal and other forms of interaction can still answer it. Its additional attack is also restricted to monsters, preventing it from simply delivering two direct attacks. The goal was to create an aggressive but gradually deteriorating DARK Dragon boss whose gameplay directly reflects

Ohhal, Dragon of the Riven Inferno

Level 8 | DARK
Dragon / Effect
ATK 3000 / DEF 2500

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) by banishing 2 DARK Dragon monsters with different names from your GY. You can only Special Summon “Ohhal, Dragon of the Riven Inferno” once per turn this way. This card gains 200 ATK for each of your banished DARK Dragon monsters, up to 1000. This card loses 600 ATK for each Rift Counter on it.

Once per turn, when your opponent activates a card or effect that targets this card (Quick Effect): You can place 1 Rift Counter on this card (max. 4); negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that card.

If this card destroys an opponent’s monster by battle: You can place 1 Rift Counter on this card (max. 4); it can make a second attack on a monster in a row. You can only use this effect of “Ohhal, Dragon of the Riven Inferno” once per turn.
