[spoiler=Prologue: Shadows of the Desert: Sandstorm Beasts VS the Lords of Power!]Sand clogged the air of the Mallear Desert. Various plants and small animals were being tossed about by the fickle wind, which carried an impossible volume of sand on its seemingly flimsy torrents.

A lone figure was barely visible through the sandstorm. His beige cloak, exactly the color of the air around him and the ground beneath his feet, was being toyed with by the same wind that wrought such horrible obstructions to his vision. He was carrying few possessions: just a couple canteens, a backpack full of rations, and a Duel Disk. After all, he planned only to make it to the next town, where his motorcycle was stored. He'd be able to travel much faster after that.

Suddenly, a sound punctuated the howling wind: the hum of a motorcycle, headed towards the traveler. Had someone stolen his transport? If he had, the thief had better be ready to Duel.

But upon sighting the rider, the wanderer smirked. It was someone he'd been looking for a very long time.

The rider wore a dark cloak with an arm cut off. The exposed arm was armored, and had an antique Duel Disk attached. The rider's face was invisible beneath his hood.

"We meet again," the rider stated in his grim voice.

"Aye," the traveler agreed.

"Marco, why are you leaving Mallear?" the armored man asked. "I was under the impression your life was going well."

"It is time I learned from the world," the man named Marco replied, "and the world learned from me."

"So you remember our last Duel," the unknown figure inferred.

"Indeed," Marco said simply, removing his cloak to reveal plain white clothes and a tall, blond hairdo beneath it.

"In that case, it wouldn't be wise to simply take your cards," the cloaked man decided. "Seeing as it's only a few minutes by foot to the town... we shall duel again, with the usual ante. If you have improved sufficiently, I will continue on my way."

"Sounds like a deal to me," Marco grinned, activating his Duel Disk. "Duel!"

Marco picked up his hand, glancing over it with bright blue eyes. He soon settled on a course of action. "I'll set two cards face-down," he began. Their holographic projections appeared, and then vanished.

"Next," he continued, "I'll activate the effect of a card in my hand. By returning this card to the top of my deck..." He picked out the card Sandstorm Beast - Lanc Seged and placed it back into his Duel Disk. "I can Special Summon the Sandstorm Beast - Harcos Kiraly!"

The sands began to part in front of the blond duelist, forming a funnel-like hole. Two horns emerged from this tornado in the ground, followed by the rest of the creature. It was a humanoid bull, with sand swirling around it. A black-and-red plaque materialized beside it.

"So, you have wrought this beast already," the cloaked duelist mused. "How much shall it cost you, I wonder?"

"It won't," Marco assured his opponent. "It'll end my turn, though."

"Fine, then." The traveler's opponent drew a card. "I activate Dimensional Fissure," he began. An invisible claw scratched a dark scar across the sky, which ripped open into a massive gash in space. "All monsters sent to the Graveyard are instead removed from play... not that you wouldn't remember."

"And now, I set one monster in face-down Defense Position, set one cards face-down, and end my turn," he said in one deft sentence.

"That's seriously it?" Marco said in slight disbelief.

"Yes," the cloaked man confirmed. "Your turn."

Marco drew. "Time to bring on another Beast," he grinned. "To Summon him, I have to pay 800 Life Points. But who cares? I Summon my Sandstorm Beast - Kinzan Szellem in Defense Mode!"

The sands rose up from the ground, forming a massive wispy hand. The figure of a man also formed in the sand. The man extended his arm, and a draconic being sprung from it, along with another plaque.

"Now, by discarding a card," he continued, "I can inflict 300 damage to you! And, you can't choose this card as an attack target until my next End Phase!"

"Stalling and burning..." the cloaked duelist mused. "That's quite a card there."

"I'm not done yet," Marco warned. "Harcos Kiraly is gonna attack your face-down monster!"

"Potentially unwise," his opponent said with a note of triumph. "That monster was D.D. Warrior Lady. You've just lost your best beatstick."

The bull raised his massive fist at the projection of the face-down card. D.D. Warrior Lady sprang from it, dodging the slash and tapping the hilt of her sword. A sphere of dark energy surrounded both monsters, and then flew off into the Dimensional Fissure, leaving no trace of the combatants.

"Well," Marco decided to be optimistic, "you still take 400 damage, 'cuz Harcos Kiraly does trample! Plus, another 800, from his effect!"

"Not a horrible move," the opposing duelist ceded. "But is that all?"

"I suppose so," the traveller decided. "Your go."

The cloaked duelist drew his card. "I place D.D. Survivor in Attack Position," he stated. There was a small ripple in space, and a warrior looking strangely like what would happen if its player wore his opponent's cloak stepped out of seemingly nowhere.

"At this point, I'll Set a card face-down and end my turn," he said simply.

Marco drew, smiling a bit. "I Tribute my Kinzan Szellem," he declared. The monster in question was engulfed in white flames. He continued, "to Summon my second Harcos Kiraly!" The bull emerged from the flames, while a ghostly figure of Kinzan Szellem floated into the black wound in the sky.

"Not discarding?" the dark duelist tested. "You'd do more burn."

"A hundred Life Points is a worthy price for a 2000 ATK beatstick," Marco said grimly.

"You were right," the opponent ceded.

"Attack D.D. Survivor!" Marco ordered, pointing. The bull lunged and ripped the warrior's arms off. "And now, I end... which means your monster comes back," he added distastefully. Sure enough, a ripple in space, and the Survivor returned.

The cloaked man drew his card. "And now for the punchline," he smiled. "I Tribute the D.D. Survivor to Summon my Caius the Shadow Monarch!!"

"Not Caius," Marco moaned as the dark emperor made his entrance.

"You remember his special effect, then?" the opponent inferred.

"Quite," Marco professed. At least I still have a surprise in store, he thought, concealing a smirk as Caius fired his dimensional sphere at Harcos Kiraly.

“Now,” the cloaked duelist ordered, “attack his Life Points directly!”

“I activate the Trap Card, Mirror Force!” the traveller barked, grinning.

“Nice move,” his opponent ceded. “Too bad I have this. I activate Solemn Judgment!”

“What?!” Marco exclaimed, completely dumbfounded. A bearded man rose from the card, bearing a tablet. After uttering the words, “Expello is magus per vita vires!,” a beam shot from the tablet, shattering a domed barrier around Marco.

“I’ll chain with Return From the Different Dimension!” the cloaked man continued. D.D. Survivor and D.D. Warrior Lady emerged from ripples in space. “Now, all three of them, attack him directly!”

Caius bellowed, “Obscurum, deleo meus infestus!” An orb of darkness formed between his clawed gauntlets, and fired straight at Marco. The D.D. soldiers followed, running to catch up with the blast, and attacked in sync with the orb.

••DUEL END••

•HOME• 0000

•AWAY• 0575

The cloaked duelist walked over to his defeated nemesis.

“Three turns,” he said simply. “That’s the same as last time.”

“Don’t take my cards...” Marco begged. “They — they’re all I have left...”

“However,” he added, “you did much better in those three turns than last duel.” He pulled a card out of his sleeve: Dark Armed Dragon.

“Dark Armed Dragon,” he asked the card, “what is thy judgment?”

There was a heart-stopping pause. The howling wind was the only sound. Finally, he spoke.

“So the ultimate dragon hath decreed,” the cloaked man said with a note of happiness in his voice, “the Sandstorm Beasts are happy with you. You may keep them. Use my motorcycle to get to town,” he gestured. “Park it there, and take your own wherever you wish to travel.” He strode away, the sandstorm quickly obscuring him.

Please, please, PLEASE R&R.

Wow, statsheets are really popular. O,x I figured since they do it in the anime, I ought to do it here. Take them if you'd like, just give credit.

I have the Duel for the next chapter set up.

It's the main character versus Belial - Marquis of Darkness.

Just need to get the prologue down. Should I do a character bio segment?
