Monarchs : Discussion

Recommended Posts

Everyone seems pretty dead set against them being at anything but 3.

What if I were to tell you that, as removal is doubtlessly better than any other effect in the game (other than, say, you win instantly, or even more removal, or negation-that-also-acts-as-removal, or something like that), the Monarchs automatically have an advantage over all other cards in terms of both playability and sheer power?

What if I were to tell you that the fact that (Kreis notwithstanding) they get an extra attack after using their effects means that, with 2400 ATK, they'll almost certainly either swing for almost 1/3 LP or generate even more advantage by destroying a monster - and that if they don't, it's because their power forced the opponent to spend even more cards to eliminate the Monarch?

What if I were to tell you that their removal ability promotes overextending by forcing players to flood their fields in order to avoid ending up with no field whatsoever one turn later? And what if I told you that, like Cyber Dragon, Monarchs make defensive play, and thus non-aggro play, impossible? What if I were to also tell you that, thanks to their high ATK and their tendency to attack and kill, Monarchs are as much an aggro deck as a control deck? What if I were to tell you that since this helps set up for any sort of OTK that would enjoy a clear field, the Monarchs, especially Kreis, also promote OTK's?

What if I were to tell you that Monarchs have appeared in the meta of every format since they were introduced into the game, and have only really been overcome with the advent of ridiculously broken cards like Chaos and DAD - and even then, have still put up a fight?

What if I were to tell you that Mobius is standing right behind you even as you read these words, and is about to destroy your computer and keyboard before attacking your Life Points directly for 2400 damage?

What if I were to tell you that, even without Treeborn Frog to supply limitless Tributes and even without Disk Commander to supply limitless hand cards, Monarchs are still incredibly easy to summon via a simple two-card combo of the Monarch in question and the Special Summonable Tribute fodder (Fiend's Sanctuary, Infernal Prodigy, something Apprentice has searched, etc)?

Now, you probably think I've gone off the deep end and want all the Monarchs from Caius to Granmarg banned. I haven't, and I don't, especially in the case of Granmarg, who should doubtlessly be at 3. Several of the others, however, are far more borderline than you might think. If they are indeed broken, then they're certainly far less broken than virtually all other broken cards.

Anyhow, since, as I suspected, we've all managed to persuade ourselves that all Monarchs should be at 3, I'm sure that we all know the perfectly logical reasons why the Monarchs cannot possibly be broken. Let's hear them from you guys.

They should all be limited because of their effects.

They are bomb effects' date=' but it is also unfair to the other player if they have crappy out-dated decks.

Its not our fault some players use crappy outdated decks.

All the monarchs are quite balanced. With the exception of Kuraz, they all require to be Tribute Summoned in order for their effects to be used. Kuraz is indeed a unique one. It can either be Normal or Special Summoned in order for its effect to be used. It has a powerful effect but that powerful effect is balanced out by not allowing Kuraz to attack the turn it is summoned. No Monarch is banworthy or for that matter Limit Worthy.

Monarchs have power in previous formats. Monarchs are now too slow to keep up with DAD, JD, and even Zombies.

Caius is now the only playable monarch for DAD (though he has made an appearance in some Zombie Decks), and Kreis is only sometimes used in Lightsworn.

Zaborg, Mobius, Thestalos, Granmarg, and Raiza are now left behind the 2 newest Monarch additions. Raiza would be more powerful unlimited.
