Creating your own forum?

I don't why I am asking here, but meh.

I am trying to teach myself how to build a forum from scratch. Now I know I could simply get a free one, or get a liscence from vB, but I don't want to, I want to learn how to build it myself. Since I am teaching myself (slowly but surely) how to build a web site.

Now, before you say google it.

I have, and the best thing that I found is how to create the basics of basics, of what is essentially, a forum. Which is just posting and replying.

Now that would work, if I knew how to actually read what to do.

I was gonna say something else, but I completely went blank..

Im not sure how many YCMers are actually qualified to answer this, I know im not.

The key is, from scratch...

Getting a cheap ole' ipbfree site is a bit lame, but effective. Look at Drift. >_>

Buying a domain and a site from vB is effective but costly, look at IFX.

Its up to you. Note, you're doing it the HARD way.

...forum...

Are you insane' date=' or are you doing this for a good reason?

[/quote']

Yes, I am partially insane. But I am making my own site for money.

Then just integrate your own HTML and Java into an IPB forum?

It's not the same, I've done that already several times.

Download the PHP files from MyBB, and look at the files using some editor, like crimson editor. Look through their files, and just make your own, using theirs with your own content replacing theirs =/

You'll need different files, to set up different aspects of a forum, and you can notice that by downloading the files for MyBB or vBulletin.

Learning Basic HTML is the best thing to start. Then you have to buy a domain or get one from 000 (PM me for the site). You'll need MySQL and PHP.

I have a little more knowledge then basic HTML/CSS.

The only thing I don't know at all, is PHP. Which is why I want to learn how to make my own (even if it is just a simple post and comment). That way I can learn PHP the best way possible.

I also already have a free domain, but currently it's pissing me off since it won't let me load the php for a forum. =/

AS YCMaker said you COULD do, or you could try to use the HTML to create objects, then to transfer it to a webpage and finally coding the forums and placing them in the HTML of the webpage and try to avoid javascript as much as possible. Make a nice little domain from a free domain site, then hosting the webpage.

If I were you' date=' I would start off with a smaller project, such a blog. Once you've learned the basics of PHP and database driven web applications, you can expand off your knowledge and explore more ambitious projects. For a decent PHP tutorial, try here.
