If you watch it without reading the book, you don't understand the motivations and backstories of the characters. Thus, the plot seems worse than it is. If you watch it after reading the book, you understand and appreciate the plot completely, yet there's so many deviations and parts cut out (the whole plot felt rushed) that you'll be left rather disappointed (as was my case).
