He had oddly brought a leaf with him, indicating he had a close bond with the leaf. He hadn't noticed that he went over water to reach the island, he just payed attention to his leaf. Wayne had also not noticed that the island was completely open to the moon. This observation proved that it was about 12:00 AM, and this assumption was all Wayne could interpret as "time". He landed, looked at the dragon, looked at Cypress, looked at Michael, looked at Zach, looked at TJ and Slash, then looked at his leaf. Wayne then focused on the leaf, not even paying close attention to what was surrounding him. He turned his head to Michael, and looked back at the leaf. Wayne then looked up at the sky, making sure he knew the time. The moon was still out. And that's when it hit him.
