Skippy Canoe's GIMP GFX Tutorial - Holos, Dark Synchros, Recolors, Stickers... | YCM AWARD WINNING!

Recommended Posts

This is my first tutorial. I figured, to help out novice GFX-ers, I'll make this. You will need GIMP to make these. To get, it go to the GIMP Website. If you have trouble finding the download, click here.

This tutorial will show you how to make GFX like what I sell in my shop. This tutorial may seem too complicated to you if you don't have a basic understanding of GIMP.

[spoiler=Dark Synchros]

1 - Right click these images and save them.

2 - Start up GIMP.

3 - Open up your soon to be Dark Synchro card. It's type should be _____ / Dark Synchro / Effect. DO NOT MAKE IT A SYNCHRO, MAKE IT AN EFFECT MONSTER!

4 - Press R and select the box where the effect is. Make sure you don't select the border.

5 - Once the whole effect box is selected, go to Tools -> Color Tools -> Colorize. This is what you do to colorize in my version of GIMP. Results may vary for other versions.

6 - Drag the Saturation bar all the way to the left.

7 - Using the Rectangular Select tool, select your whole card.

8 - Hold down Ctrl and use the Rectangular Select Tool to select the picture, including the border, and effect box, including the border, subtracting them from the selection.

9 - Press E to change to the Elliptical Select Tool. Subtract the Attribute from the selection.

10 - Your card should be fully selected, not including the effect box and border, the picture and picture border, and the Attribute.

11 - Use the Colorize tool to desaturate your selection.

12 - Open up your blank card.

13 - Use the Rectangular Select Tool to select the area where the stars should be.

14 - Copy it and paste it into your Dark Synchro.

15 - Line the pasted star area up with where it should be, making sure it covers the stars completely.

16 - Open up the inverted star.

17 - Copy it, then paste it into your Dark Synchro.

18 - Line it up between the name box and the effect border. It's left side should align with the left side of the effect border.

19 - Move the star to the left 3 pixels with the arrow keys.

20 - Paste the star in again to add another. The stars should be aligned, and have 1 pixel between them. Your stars should look like this zoomed in.

23 - Place the Gold Sticker over the original sticker.

24 - Go to Layer -> Merge Down. Do this until there is only 1 layer in your image.

This will also work for Specific and Advanced Holos.

[spoiler=Full Card Recolors]

1 - Open up your card in GIMP.

2 - Do Steps 4-11 for Dark Synchros, except make sure you subtract the level stars from your selection in Step 9, and instead of desaturating your selections, do the following:

2a - Click Tools -> Color Tools -> Hue-Saturation. Results may vary for other versions of GIMP.

2b - Drag the "Hue" bar until you find the color you want. Make sure you remember or copy the Hue number for future selections you recolor on this card.

2c - Press "OK."

3 - Your card should look something like this.

2rzqk54.jpg

[spoiler=Picture Recolors]

1 - Open up your card picture in GIMP.

2 - Click Tools -> Color Tools -> Hue-Saturation. Results may vary for other versions of GIMP.

3 - Adjust the "Hue" bar until the color is to your liking.

4 - Press "OK."

Here is a separate procedure to recolor certain parts on a picture.

1 - Do Steps 1-2.

2 - Say you had a girl with a dress. If you only wanted to recolor the dress, you would do this. First, look at the top of the Hue-Saturation window. There should be a circle of letters and colors. Each letter stands for a color. R for Red, B for Blue, and so on. Select the color of the part you want recolored.

3 - Drag the "Hue" bar. If you selected "R" for Red, then only the red parts of the picture will change color. Adjust it to your liking.

4 - Save your picture, then you're done!

This is the result of a normal Picture Recolor:

296ni3p.jpg

NOTE: When you recolor, you won't use the entire card.

[spoiler=Sticker Recolors]

1 - Save this in a folder you'll remember, like My Pictures. 2mnkhl1.jpg

2 - Do Steps 2 - 4 for Gold Stickers.

3 - Go to Tools -> Color Tools -> Hue-Saturation. Results may vary for other versions of GIMP.

4 - Adjust the "Hue" bar until the color is to your liking.

5 - Press "OK." Okay? :)

6 - Go to Layer -> Merge Down.

7 - Save your card, then you're done! The result should be like this, or close to it.

[spoiler=Tokens]

1 - Make a blank card in Yugioh Card Maker. To do this. fill out everything but the lore. Make sure the title is "_____ Token."

2 - Start up GIMP.

3 - Open your blank card in GIMP.

4 - Press R and select the box where the effect is. Make sure you don't select the border.

5 - Once the whole effect box is selected, go to Tools -> Color Tools -> Hue-Saturation. This is what you do in my version of GIMP.

Subtract the Attribute and Level Stars from the selection.

10 - Your card should be fully selected, not including the effect box and border, the picture and picture border, the Level Stars, and the Attribute.

11 - Use the Hue-Saturation tool to desaturate the selection.

12 - Save your card, and you should be done. The result should be somewhat like this:

14wefra.jpg

[spoiler=Renders]

The way I do renders is a lot different than other renderers, but comes up with a way better result.

1 - Open up the image you're rendering in GIMP.

2 - Press Ctrl + X, then Ctrl + V. The whole image should've disappeared, then reappeared. This makes what's behind your image transparent.

3 - Press Shift + E to use the Eraser Tool. Change your brush to a large sized brush.

4 - With the eraser, erase everything around your character, and make a basic outline around it without touching your character. Now your character should be in the center of your image with only a little background surrounding it, and a checkered background where you erased.

5 - Now, choose a smaller brush, such as 9x9 or 11x11.

6 - Outline your character using the brush. You may need to use smaller brushes to get into small corners on your character.

7 - Erase any leftover background around your character. A way to check to see if you have anything left is to:

7a - Press Shift + O to use the color select tool.

7b - Press part of your checkered background.

7c - Your selection should select everything but your rendered character. If you see a hole in your selection, unselect everything, remembering where you saw holes. Erase over those spots, and check again.

8 - Once there are no holes, you're done! Save your file as a PNG or it will be given a white background, and ruin your transparent one.

9 - This is what your result should look like:

[spoiler=3D Animations - Spinning Sphere / Ripple / Waves]

1 - Start up GIMP.

2 - Open up the image you want to animate.

3 - Go to Script-Fu -> Animators -> Rippling OR Spinning Globes OR Waves. In other versions, the Script-Fu section may be under Filters.

4 - Adjust the different stats if you want.

5 - Press OK. It takes a while to load.

6 - Save your image as a GIF, and when the proper prompt comes up, select "Save as Animation."

7 - Your result should be like one of these.
