After School Detentions

I really don't think that the teachers have the right to do this, as the schools give an allotted time for school, then you go home. If you were to have a dentist appointment, they shouldn't be allowed to keep you in. If you have an after school activity, like soccer or football, or anything else, they shouldn't keep you in, because it's unfair to your team especially if you are like the best team member.

Discuss.

Schools usually have a legal restriction as to what time they can keep kids until, which applies to most clubs. These restrictions should apply to detention, as well.

For example, my school ends at 2:30. The clubs are allowed to stay until 4:00, at which time every student must leave unless the teacher and parent both consent to otherwise, such as a school trip where the bus leaves at 4:30. Detention should be allowed to run from the time school ends to the time clubs end, which is 1.5 hours in this case. If you have a dentist appointment or soccer practice, you have to wonder that if you were in a club, it would be the same procedure.

Saturday detentions, however, are bullshit. The school shouldn't have a legal right to force you into school on a weekend. Most workplaces run from Monday to Friday, and you are usually paid extra for working on weekends, and even then it's optional and you do not have to. Any detention should be during the weekdays, from the allotted (I think I doubled a letter incorrectly, so sp?) time specified. Because if I have a Saturday detention, I sure as hell wouldn't go.

Here's a simple solution - don't break the rules and you won't have to worry about this problem.

If you have a dentist appointment, then they usually reschedule the detention. As for after school clubs and sports and the like, it's not their fault that you broke the rules. They're suffering because of YOUR mishavior. Don't wanna do that to your team/club/whatever? Don't get detention!

As for Saturday detention, think about it. A lot of kids don't really like going to school and they LOVE the weekend. Well, I'm pretty sure they'd get the message not to break the rules if they learn that doing so can cost them half their weekend. The teachers do get paid for Saturday detention (at least down here they do).

So, the moral of the story: Don't break the rules and you won't have to worry about detention.

Although lately, a lot of schools have been fazing out after school detention and resort to ISS (In School Suspension) - which I think is worse.

More often that not the administration of a school is bullshit and half the punishments handed out are unneeded and a simple warning would have done (much like this forum).

And if the student really is deserving of a punishment, (s)he won't stop just because of a stupid detention. If (s)he really wants to, (s)he'll continue doing bullshit.

I think that is actually better than the current situation.

No, I'm aware of your white text and associated lame joke.

Both of which have nothing to do with Debates.

As such;

Go away.

Well, if you commit an infraction on the school rules, they have every right to punish you. Be glad they can't hit you anymore, or you'd most likely have more paddle wounds then a lake.

It is completely fair for them to keep you after school if you have an after school activity. You trespassed upon the school's courtesy to keep you there, and, in repercussion, you must surrender your time. It's fair game, in laymen's terms.

How kind of them. If only the Government was forcing me to attend this school that 'graciously' let me attend their classes

ARandomCardMaker, you get detention a lot, don't you?

My school gives ISS, which I think is a dumb idea, because all they do is send you to a different room with abunch of misbehavors like you and you just do work with people who you are more likely to talk with and have fun. At my school, everyone who's had it considers ISS a reward.

Why must I live in the south? I'm too smart for these country hics...

My two cents:

Detention: If you are going to waste the school's time, they damn well have the right to waste yours.

Clubs: If you've signed up for a club, aren't you kind of acknowledging and agreeing to stay late? ._. There shouldn't be any conflict or complaint there.

Interesting fact: I found out from a cop who came into school that it is illegal to restrain somebody who breaks into your home (example you can't lock them in the cupboard or anything). Obvious exception being if he's armed. I turned round to this cop (in front of my teachers) and said:

'Hold on. I'm not allowed to lock up someone who comes into my house and tries to nick my television, yet the school can restrain me against my will because I forgot my homework? How does that work???'

Seriously though, you do the crime, you do the time. And don't give me detentions are handed out for little or no reason, you really think the teacher wants to spend their afternoon with a load of oiks? But it's a system with flaws.

I think detention of sitting in silence/doing lines/whatever is too easy. People should do service to school i.e. help the grounds staff, kitchen, etc. Put some solid graft and earn some respect for yourself, rather than just sitting there resenting the teacher who you're now more likely to cause trouble for, and get more detentions.
