See, what happened here is that the OP brought up an example of the topic that sort of had something to do with religion, and does YCM discuss the overall topic? Ha, ha, ha, NO!

Instant religion flame war.

Um, where? Lol.

Who is this Jesus fellow you speak of?
No idea. I think he flies a sleigh or something.

I love how everyone in this thread and possibly on YCM thinks that Christmas started as a Christian holiday. <_< "lawl I iz Atheist and going against stuff that apparently all the other idiots in the world strongly believe in"
It's known as the day of Jesus' birth but before that it was a Pagan celebration of the sun god, the Sol Invictus cult for the Romans for example. The Jesus birth was put on that day later but no one seriously believes that he was born on the 25th or even in December.
Wiccans celebrate it as part of the Wheel of the Year (Yule), Jews celebrate Hanukkah, the modern civilization celebrates family gathering and buying presents, even in countries that have nothing to do with "western" beliefs. It's like a "catch-all" kind of day. But I highly doubt that many people will think about all the spiritual stuff beyond the mountains of presents -_-, personally I celebrate it...well to get together with the family and buy presents for them, do lots of baking, decorate rooms and all.

But you do have a point with how it became a materialistic holiday like most of them, in my family we set a kind of rule that there will only be small presents, nothing over so-and-so-many Euros for everyone. Making gifts is a great thing but not when it turns into a contest about who buys the most expensive stuff.=/

Christmas itself is starting to go the way of Halloween and Thanksgiving. You can expect Santa Clause to replace Jesus entirely (when it comes to Christmas) by the end of the century.

It already happened. But to be honest, I don't think it's a bad thing, I don't see why anyone would dedicate a whole day to the birth of Jesus and the idea of celebrating a sun god in winter sounds a bit stupid to me.

It has yet to arrive at the point where people go "What?! That's a Christian holiday!"

And you've made a large mistake in your observations. Christmas was moved to December because Christians were able to celebrate their savior's birth without fear of persecution(it was done while a larger festival was being held). It isn't based off of sun worship.

The Jesus holiday isn't based on the Sol Invictus cult but the choice of the day is. As you said it was moved there because the Christian minority in late Roman times could celebrate it, but most of all it was pushed during the christianization so that the Pagans would adjust to it easily, because it was a date they already knew. Similar to Eastern/Ostara.

Meh I just wanted to point out that there are a lot of holidays being celebrated on the 24/25th, and some people in this thread seem to think that "OMG I'm an Atheist, yet I celebrate Christmas for teh presents, is that strange?". It isn't really because Santa has really outranked Jesus, Sol, Mithras, the winter solstice and all the others together, for better or worse.

Right now he has larger control, but he has yet to completely wipe religion out of things(like Thanksgiving and Halloween and things inspired by Christian activities). And some religions like Hannukah have generally carried on without Santa.

Like these fun-spoilers?T_T
A group of German Catholics does not want Santa Claus coming down their chimney this year, arguing that -- spoiler alert if you still believe in Santa! -- the mythical figure only serves to teach kids about commercialism.

The Bonifatiuswerk of German Catholics -- a Catholic aid organization -- sees Santa as "an invention of the advertising industry designed to boost sales" and as "a representative of consumer society," Reuters reports.

The group is now calling for "Santa Claus-free zones," which anyone who has ever tried to maneuver through midtown Manhattan (or the local mall) during the holiday season, has also prayed for.

That's not to say they want kids to wake up on Christmas morning to a lump of coal. The group would like to replace Santa with St. Nicolas, the patron saint of children, who they describe as "a helper in need who reminds us to be kind, to think of our neighbors and to give the gift of happiness."

The campaign is supported by several German celebrities.

"Unlike Santa Claus, Nicolas wants to give children inner riches and not just encourage them to strive for material wealth," German TV presenter Nina Ruege was quoted as saying.

The group has a point -- to kids, Christmas is a time to make a list of all the toys you're dreaming about, and receive as many as possible.

But, for Christians (and many secular Americans who also celebrate the holiday), isn't it a time of childhood magic like no other? And don't we all grow up wanting to give our own kids the same fantasy we had?
Meh to be honest I don't really care who gives me my presents.
