Anbu-of-Sand
Wait Anbu this might be the break spellcasters needed. =O
Eh, it is likely Konami will release perhaps an Archetype along with the new mechanic, but the Archetype / cards they'll give us will most likely only have like, 2 good cards and the rest being toilet paper. The chances of one of those Excess monsters being a (good) Spellcaster, is very slim D:
Thunderfist Monk is a level 4 though. The most you could get would be four level 1 monsters, for a total of 2 skipped Draw Phases (2 per card).
It's 2 per card? That somewhat sucks....making your opponent skip 2 Draw Phases is still pretty fun though.

Also, how did they come up with a mechanic that Duel Masters has already had for a while anyway? evilfusion
I'd have to see what they come up with in terms of actual monsters to truly grasp the potential of the concept. I see it as interesting, and with so much level support in the game already, it won't be a useless mechanic. Most likely, Excess monsters might replace Tuners in most people's decks. The more monsters you give up, the more times that monster can be spared from REMOVAL. Bounce, spin, destruction, battle...Excess is meant to counter all of it. This counters the mindset that due to simple removal, very few cards are worth running because of the effort taken to summon then. Due to the specific "must be same level" restrictions on each Overlay monster, level 5 and 7 will probably never be used, as that would require 5/7 level ones, with zero alternatives. Level 2, 4, 6, and 8 will be the most supported. Level 3 might still get something, due to using 3 level ones. No alternatives, but a lot easier to manage. HaouJudai
I'd say thunderfist will be nerfed if printed at all. The mechanic looks interesting. We can hammer out the details of it in the months to come after an official release from konami - anything we say now is speculation. Generic God Synchros are going to be an endangered species. Not so much from being obsolete due to power creep but more so that konami is going to begin to phase them out. More synchros will begin to show up on the limit/ban list. So the series looks like bakugan and it's game mechanics are duel masters? How much manna will we need to do this?
Thunderfist was a purely hypothetical example. I don't think that'll happen. I think it's more likely Excess Monsters will just be very powerful and easy to use, just like the first Synchros. They'll be good enough to try to use, and then later support will make them even stronger and faster, just like Synchros, and making Synchros not as effective, just like what Synchros did to Rituals and Fusions. Since this is evidently coming in the wake of 5Ds, maybe the whole plot of the anime is leading up to a veiled instance of Konami implying/admitting that Synchro Summon was a horribly broken idea and that if we dont stop using them, the world is going to be destroyed. But then, I digged througt net, and... it's true. There were some scans of forst episode of Zexal manga, and the main character's rival actually DID Exceed summon. darkwolf777
Nowhere does it say it negates the card that would be destroying it, nor does it say that you can use its destruction part of its effect when it's being Summoned to prevent its own destruction at that time. So either you're presuming or you're being sarcastic.
I probably quoted this and responded by thinking you were talking about a different part of the mechanics, so to respond to the last effect that states "if this card would be removed from the field by a card effect or by battle, remove 1 overlaid card instead": Since it includes destruction by battle, If by battle, the overlaid card would have to be removed during Damage Calculation where it would have been destroyed. I mean, you cannot have a monster who's dead from "after damage calculation to the end of the Damage Step", with no explanation as to how it would be revived. I would guess the same way would apply to being "destroyed by a card effect". The overlaid card would be removed to prevent the destruction rather than the "sent to the Graveyard" part, instead of leaving a literal "Zombie" Exceed monster on the field. I would say that destruction comes with the promise of removing it from the field. An overlaid card could be removed so that it wouldn't be destroyed. Then again, no point in getting defensive about a mechanic that isn't in effect in the actual card game yet. All we can do is speculate.
