you need jaces
You honestly don't

Magic has SOOOOO many more possabilities then YuGiOh and basically any deck can be powerful... like mine I use a flurry of Green Creatures that are capable of producing more mana so I can summon bigger creaturs and which get bigger and let me summon more monsters with the more monsters that are on the field...

Bramle Elemental's Power and Toughness are equal to the number of Green Mana symbols on your field and My Hydra (I forget which) is capable of decreasing its cost by 1 green symbol for each green monster I control... and it costs 8... I've made some impressive combos out of nothing

Green - Beat Sticks
Red - Burn
Black - Kill / Destroy / Hand Control
White - Swarm Soldiers / Heal
Blue - Draw Power / Monster Control

Green is my favorite just because of my Deck... but I haven't updated the deck in a while so I am missing some very useful green and current green support... but its more fun than yugioh and you can make good decks that only cost like $30-40 (us dollars)
The game can be more fun because its more personal customization and more fun things to play, lol, there are so many possabilites...

That's like saying get some Solemn Warnings.
Its more like saying get 2-4 Solemn Warnings for 1 Deck... but you honestly don't need them, you can play competatively without them

well, boss z is bad at yugiohs so i dont see how he would be good at mtg

I don't play YuGiOh IRL, I play MTG... I'm not bad @ it, you wouldn't know

You don't need Jace because there are a ton of possibilities out there. Don't follow the stupid tournament reports, Red deck wins and infect can do amazingly. It all depends on what color/colors you want to run.

The best thing to do is to buy a couple of the "intro packs". Don't by any 2011, though, since those are getting rotated out soon.

Jace: the $400 price tag to standard. Don't get him unless you plan to play Extended, he's only going to be in Standard for a few more months [/yays]. Anyway, back on the question.

Cards: First, figure out what you want to play. A new set, New Phyrexia, is coming out in two weeks, so I'd advise you to get cards when it comes out. Really, any deck can be good, so you should probably get an intro pack (starter deck, just actually good and it comes with a bonus pack), figure out what cards you do/do not like, and build your deck from there. I have never been to a tourney, I just play casual, so I have no idea what cards are good and budget.

Meta: Caw-Blade and its variants, RUG (Red Blue Green) control, U/B Tezzeret control. I could come up with more but I don't feel like it. Search 'em if you don't know what they are. Suffice to say they all use Jaces.

Rotations: The blocks come out in sets of three sets (large, small, small). Between each block, there is a Core Set (huge). They latest two blocks and the core set between them is Standard format. Extended is back four blocks, and Legacy and Vintage are the entire history of Magic.

Formats: I defined Standard, Extended, Legacy, and Vintage above, so I don't feel like doing so again. Other formats are things like Archenemy, Planechase, and EDH/Commander. Search them on the official Magic website for rules.

Stuff to Get: For beginners, I suggest getting a Deck Builder's Toolkit ($20) and an Intro Pack ($12). An Intro Pack is a Starter Deck that can actually play ok, with a bonus pack, and a Deck Builder's Toolkit is 185 spells, 100 lands, and four recent packs. Easy way to start your collection.

Useful Sites:
• magicthegathering.com. Official Magic website. Has daily columns on various Magic topics.
• tappeout.net. Sort of like YCM, but you create decks, not cards, and there is actual intelligence. Warning: You cannot play online there.

Zendikar through Mirrodin Besieged, and in two weeks, New Phyrexia. That's Zendikar, Worldwake, Rise of the Eldrazi, M11, Scars of Mirrodin, and Mirrodin Besieged.
For someone who's getting into the game, one should only pay any mind to Scars of Mirrordin, Mirrordin Beseiged and New Phyrexia.

Everything else will rotate in a few months.

Since I start playing a year ago, Ill go into how I got into the game.

The most obvious is to have irl friends that know the game. Part of the reason I had fallen out of yugioh was because no one I knew play and when my friend started to bring his MTG cards into school and got me and a few of my other friends to play with them and we liked it and got hooked. Not only does it give you people to play with, you also get someone to teach you stuff, and give you decks to play to help you get a feel for the game as you start.

Next is building a deck. As said the new set come out in a couple weeks so start there. When I first started out I looked through a bunch of the intro decks to find the ones that had cards I like and I brought them. http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/701. That link has all the info on said decks.
Another thing you should do is find the color that you like. This helps you figure out what kind of paths you should follow when you first start. I know when I was introducing my friend to the game I sent him a link with a bunch cards from the latest set.
http://magiccards.info/query?q=%2B%2Be%3Anph%2Fen&v=card&s=issue
That is the set that comes out next week. Not only will you get an idea what to expect you should start to find what kind of effects you like more. It's a lot to take in so it's fine to go at it in small amounts. Also, try to go to the prerelease. It might end up being a lot to take in, but if you have some friends it's a lot of fun.

Lastly, the offical magic site is an AMAZING place to go to learn about the game. Every week you get 10 articles about topics that from all different parts of the world of magic. For a new player I'd say serious fun and building on a budget would be the best place to look at since they are all deck building aids. Limited information, might be of small help but not as much. Also, MTG has a huge story and savor the flavor is the place to learn it and is one of my fav things to actually read. The other topics I'm interested in are the design and development columns (making magic and latest development) since they both talk about how the game gets made.
