Why the heck is science so hated in the U.S?

So while I was chillaxing with family during break, I noticed something.

All of my family members hate science in general.

When I was caught watching Carl Sagan's Cosmos on Youtube, they called me a fa**** for watching something old.

Then later on during the evening, I saw them all huddled on the couch watching Jersey Shore I quickly left and went back to watching Cosmos. Later on at night, when we're all in my cousin's room playing videogames (Me: Minecraft, My cousin: DC Universe, My lil bro: COD MW3) I decided to listen to some Symphony of Science. They quickly yelled at me to turn that "s***" off and instead listened to this:

I snatched some headphones and listened to "A Case For Mars".

Not only that, but the older members of my family completely think stuff like biology was a load of bull, that I'm completely lazy for trying to teach myself C++ and Python.

Computer languages taught at my local community college.

Not only that, BUT EVEN MY NEIGHBORS AND FELLOW STUDENTS THINK IT'S RETARDED.

*Typical consternation with people at school*

Teacher: Discuss current events!

Me: *Mentions science related topic*

Students: Why the hell is this news? It's retarded, etc. etc.

Hell, before break, I got into a debate against my class and teacher regarding evolution whether it happened or not.

It typically goes like this:

Teacher: *Basically challenges me to a debate about evolution*

Me: *States sites, books, and people who are taught and trained in biology*

Class: Doesn't make sense!

Teacher: The theory of evolution is just a theory! It can't be proven!

Me: Scientific theory is different from the theory you think of.

Teacher: No it's not! Detention for disrupting class!

Me: *In my head* f***ing nationalist.

Your school....I hate it.

I'm actually glad that my friends get an open discussion going about current events. My teachers are fairly good at staying unbiased, but its easy to see their views. Last week we had a good debate about who should be President. The current generation is the reason why our country fell in world ranking, and of course they expect us to fix it.

I wish I could give you a high five so much.

This newer generation is spoiled by the rotton bunch of our era.

Do it.

It will fuel my hatred.

Hatred so far is the few things that keep me on living.

Very well. Point and case, my 3 second cousins. 2 are spoiled brats, and one follows them.

I was just with them on vacation too. Youngest one is playing with a jacket. Throws it across the room. Tell her not to. She throws it again. Tell her not to. Throws it again. Tell her not to. Throws it again. I yell her name. She runs to auntie crying. I can tell you I would not have been given a second chance at her age there.

Another one. At my aunt's bday party. The older one gets out of her chair and goes off for a while. Youngest gets on. Oldest gets back, complains at how she was there first. I told her she got off so she lost it. She said how she was about to get back on it. I tell her she should of been faster. She then wispers in the younger one's ear "I hate you". Oh did I want to slap her right there.

The problem is, the parents don't give a crap like they should. They give their kids what they want just to stop hearing their whining. When they don't get what they want, they think whining solves it.

Until my Uncle yells at them and makes me smile :)

Uh...parents these days drive me insane. To think it started when spanking became a form of child abuse, and now is almost frowned upon by peers.

My kids do something stupid and they're getting exactly what I got, because it teaches something. I know that its some technical theory/thing that says its wrong to teach kids that way, but I see it as the ends justifies the means in this case. I don't care if they behave because they're scared of getting spanked, when they grow up they'll learn that they were spanked because what they did was wrong. Teaching right from wrong to a child/infant is pointless imo, while fear works until they understand.

My tertiary sources state American Christians were angry at Obama's replacing "God," with "creator," in a speech of his.
The largest American demography is of the Christian branch, which has always been devoid of empiricism. The root of the prominence is the large amount of British who colonized the country long before. Had the British been an atheist demography, the country currently would have not roared at Obama's sympathetic change. The pious turn religion into dangerous idiosyncrasies and taint succeeding generations.

Reminds me of what happened during one summer:

Me and my little bro is playing Brawl. Our little sis wanted to join so we let her. After I killed my lil bro, I Falcon Punched her. She cries at how I'm being unfair and she kicks me in my nuts. I slap her saying she's not allowed to do that just because she lost. She cries and runs to our older bro saying I slapped her for no reason. He comes in and punches me hard in the gut. I keel over and he kicks me saying to take it like a man. My lil bro says he saw her kicking me in my nuts and he tells her kindly to not do it again and kicks me again in the gut saying how no matter what, women should never be hit.

f***ing chauvinistic bastard.

I heard this too, but I can only find things in regards to Obama not thanking God during his speech. He didn't change it to creator, but he just omitted it, which angered some.

I don't really get why, because in the comments to said video/article one said that this country has changed and because it isn't focused on Religion that the country went downhill. Then another quoted a speech from Washington calling Thanksgiving a religious holiday when making it official.

So apparently people know America has changed, yet still hold it to old standards. <_<

And of course the whole lol of trying to tell someone who to thank.

Both of you overreacted. I would've held your sister in place for a while and asked why she felt she had to kick me. And in your brother's shoes I would've asked for your side of the story then told you both off.

"You never hit a girl"

This is, while hitting women is highly frowned upon nearly everywhere, is one of the most sexist and unpolitically correct arguments I've heard.

I'm not saying I'd hit a woman. I would if it were not a "bad thing" to do in today's society, but of course I wouldn't for obvious reasons.

I hate anti-science arguments. It drives me crazy. I'm openly atheist and I'm lucky that all people in my school understand and respect that. Other than the few light-hearted jabs by my friends :P

The U.S doesn't hate science, it gives us more ways to be lazy and not work.
It's people who know more than us that we hate, we don't like being wrong.
I would of had an explosive argument with a teacher if they tried giving me detention for something like that. Why would they challenge you to a debate about evolution if they don't want to here your opinion?

Mainly due to how I react.

I tend to actually try to make sense in my school.

Most of the other kids find it quite funny that I'm quite up tight regarding logic and common sense.

Assuming you're in high school, visit collages/uni's (whatever you call them) and try to get to know some staff members a bit before deciding. Where I am I've had some pretty good conversations on religion that didn't devolve into "Believe what I say or I'll hurt you" type of arguments. And I've had plenty of logic conversations that made sense.

America does not hate science, America hates academics.

Do not blame one religion for the country's retardation.

The OP obviously lives in an extremely conservative area. In most schools you'd get fired for even thinking about evolution not being 100% factual.

This is really just another, "Boohoo, I'm so much smarter than everyone around me" thread. C++ and Python have absolutely nothing to do with the kind of science you're talking about, so in reality, they just hate smart things.

My campus is surrounded by various churches. This wouldn't be a bad thing if they didn't send out pastors who call every woman a whore and spout racist remarks.

I don't get how they think this will help them get converts. =/

These are people I hate.

"YOU ARE DOOMED TO GO TO HELL HEATHENS!!!"

Aren't we supposed to love each other though?

I ran into one (I was alone of course) on a street corner last Monday, and still remember his exact words.

"Our community has three problems, which has made it a living hell.

1. Homosexuality
2. Sexual activity before marriage
3. Lesbianism"

Since I was the only one there he stopped after I was about 10 feet from him. And yes, I do know that number 3 is the same as 1, but that's what he said.

That's what I disagree with, stating someone else will burn in X dimension if they don't do X isn't exactly hate.

If someone told you that you were about to be hit by a flying ice cream truck, would that mean they hate you?
No, but I'd appreciate if they would tell me how I could avoid it without screaming "heathen" at me.
