You start as being X-0. x = Number of wins and 0 is how many losses you currently have. Wins are irrelevant, so it's just referred to as X. Since it's the start of round 1, you have 0 losses.You lose, you're X-1. Participants who are X-1 after round 1 will play each other in Round 2.
