Fantasy - would you read it?

In light of the new forum, I thought I might as well ask a question. For those of you that don't know me; the name's Umbra, and in the distant past I used to be a moderator here. Back then, the place was called Fanfics, and along with several others I helped shape the Creative Writing community into what it is today. In my time, I've also written a few stories, which in general have been appreciated by those who've read them.

Now, I'm planning my triumphant return to this site after a long absence, with a new story. Truth be told, I have been reading / watching / playing a lot of A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones content recently, and it has inspired me to write a fantasy tale in the same style. However, I can't help but to wonder if YCM is the right place to put it, given that the main audience first and foremost seems to be interested in the card game.

That's where my question comes in, I assume. Would you be interested in reading a fantasy story? If you do, what would you like to see?

Fantasy is a difficult genre to write. It requires significant skill in world-building, and is definitely different from other styles.

No worry with posting some fantasy. I'm open to reading pretty much anything. Some straight-up fantasy would be great.

I've never spoken to you before, but I've heard stuff about you, and seen some of your work. You seem pretty damn good, and its nice to see you back. Despite never having seen you before... I think you get what I mean.

I personally would love to read some fantasy works. Fantasy is the genre that I love to write above all others, and I find it a lot more intresting. Creative Writing gets so little attention, I would love to see origional work here instead of just fics.

As for the plot... I'm not sure what I would want to see from it. I personally would give it a read no matter what. So long as its kinda Dark. I find gritty fantasy, swords and magic and fighting more intresting than other sorts. But then again, my taste isn't the same as everyones. I'm sure you'd find something good to write about. Your reputation would probably get more people reading it, regardless of the topic itself.

Not going to lie, I'm tired of seeing mainly Yugioh related stories. It all pretty much boils down to the same thing. So I say go right ahead! I'll definitely be reading it! =D Hell, if you get enough feedback/readers, I may be inclined to post the book I'm literally attempting to write. I just haven't shown anyone yet. I'm to picky on it. .-.

As for plot, go with whatever you feel most comfortable with. ^^

I've been thinking of multiple fantasy ideas recently as well, having read the Night Angel Trilogy and A Way of Kings, as well as reading Warbreaker right now. Personally, I don't like seeing a ton of alternate races in my fantasy - what I'd like more is political conflict and various factions and their machinations.

Have you seen the show Supernatural? That's where some of my ideas are currently coming from. That and Gears of War. :3

I love reading and occasionally writing fantasy, and since I know you and how awesome your previous works are I would totally give your story a shot.

I like all kinds of fantasy, but I mostly enjoy less classic fantasy. My definition of classic fantasy would be a world with a lot of classic races like man, elves, dwarves and orcs where there's a big badie like Sauron. I like it better when the world is original and most characters are human, with maybe one or two other races.

I'm currently working on a fantasy world on my own, and I might post a thread about it here in the near future.

I will definitely be going for a more "low fantasy" approach to things - i.e. very few non-human races, little to no magic, and so forth - and I'm glad to see that there's some interest in the community. The political aspect will most certainly be there as well.

Rinne, if you haven't read A Song of Ice and Fire, you definitely should. Seems like they'd be right up your alley.

As opposed to figuratively trying to write a book, where you just stare at Microsoft Word for a bit, sigh, then go watch some porn? :P

OT: Yes I would. It's mah fahvorite genrah aftah ahll.

When writing fantasy, like the comic I'm making, I follow this philosophy: Anything goes. It's fantasy. Anything can happen. Super-intelligent gorilla mob bosses with tommy guns that shoot flaming fists! Half-frozen caveman cyborgs with kung-fu grip! Undead tree sloths that shoot green lightning out of their hands! Were-turtles with lobster heads that ride griffin-elephant crossbreeds!

As long as it can be explained in 2 sentences or less.

Usually, my favourite way to write fantasy is to change an aspect of normal life. If it were different, enough ripples would be made to create a significantly alien world. Obviously, sticking in fantasy elements is vital.

I was playing around myself with a 'What would happen if a city structure was reversed?' thing. The poor are in the centre of the city flanked on the outside by the richer. Such a city has government all on the edge of the city. It gives you a cool little plot device to abuse. For instance, revolt could easily happen within the poor, and you end up with conflict within the city.
