Major Story Transition

In the story I'm currently writing, I've done a bit of character-building and such, though not much. Seriously, I've only got 6-7 chapters finished. My dilemma is that I've introduced a tournament, though I'm not sure how to approach it. My options:

Sit around and make more generic, irrelevant, character-building chapters

Go right into the tournament immediately with several duels

Take a bit of time to prepare the characters for the tournament
Honestly, though. I'm stuck. Furthermore, how should I get into this part of the plot? I'm at a creative standstill, here.

If you think something your writing is irrelevant, then you should probably go ahead and not write it.

If anything, you could probably include moments of character building spread out within the duel. I mean, the characters could all just talk amongst themselves a little before the duels start, or they can talk to their opponents or some other thing.

But otherwise, why haven't you gotten the character building done within the first 6-7 chapters? Why would you suddenly get heaps of it when people expected action? Just seems silly that number 1 would even remotely be an option.

Figure out what the most interesting thing is and do that.

In standard YGO, the only difference between a tournament and not-a-tournament is 1) the main characters are now collecting Star Chips/Locator Cards/GX Medals/Heart Pieces, and 2) a switch from using Ace Monster A to Ace Monster B (Gaia, Summoned Skull -> Dark Magician, Flame Wingman -> Neos, Junk Warrior -> Stardust Dragon, Hope -> Hope Ray). Also, tournaments sometimes have "plot" of some kind.

So, knowing nothing about your story, I don't really see what kind of vast, tone-shattering transition has to be made.
