Crystal Remnants
Hello there fellow readers of YCM. I've created this thread with the hopes of gathering some opinions and advice on any writing-related topic that might come to mind. Hopefully I'll get some responses since I've never been one for writing stories of any kind, and therefore could really use some input. My first question refers to the Yugioh fanfic I am hoping to start soon: What is your opinion on the use of custom cards in fanfics? Do you utterly love/hate them? Or is it completely dependent on the quality of the cards? Thank you for your time and attention! All responses are considered helpful and are taken into consideration. Not-so-Radiant Arin
Custom Cards are one of those things, in my opinion, that should be handled with care. If you get all through up to the end of the duel where person A is in a bad situation and person B has the complete advantage over person A, and then person A decides to topdeck a card that completely obliterates the field and deals 8000 Effect Damage, it becomes a case of "why did I bother reading this?" I always use Customs when making fics; it generally adds more depth and creativity when you're writing it, and sometimes, your audience will appreciate it more. Dr. Cakey
Good customs are great, bad customs...aren't. Duh. In my opinion, when working with custom cards, you should probably create your pool of customs before you start using them rather than making them up as you go, because this'll prevent you from pulling cards out of your ass. Agro
Let's just say I can see why they make fake cards for the anime and manga.
NoshpalStefan
If you're striving for the effect of "Main Character is down, but he mustn't lose because he's the MC", then sure, creating custom cards can become very beneficial and interesting, but as it was previously mentioned, if it's something that just destroys the opponent with ease/doesn't fit into a nicely formulated combo, then the reader will feel cheated out of his time for reading your work, Nonetheless, it is easily done, using custom cards that is, but as for me, I enjoy using real cards simply because the reader can somewhat relate to that, the cards need no explanation, and there's no need for me to create custom cards when there are already so many broken cards in the game as it is. bury the year
Don't introduce a custom card in one duel without the expressed intention of using it again later. Make a small set of custom cards that work together synergistically and reliably. Only pull a new card out of the hat once or twice, if at all. Otherwise, if your MC can't draw his way out of a bind, make him lose and suffer the consequences. If you have bad designs, you should suffer for it. (That sounded meaner than it should have.)
