ListenToLife
I don't think nerd is as much about being intelligent as aspiring to gain more intelligence. IQ tests are unfortunately inaccurate. And more importantly, they do not say that you are more intelligent, but that you have the potential to be. The most intelligent human on the planet probably doesn't have the highest IQ, since I'm betting the person with the highest IQ doesn't apply themselves as much as one would think. Also, IQ, if you know, is based on comparisons from other people your age. That means that there's a high probability that while your IQ is currently high, if you were to put your same score with, let's just say, 30 year olds, there's certainly a chance you end up with a much lower score. So I wouldn't exactly say you're more intelligent than 1% of people than you're more intelligent than 1% of your age group. All that aside, there are areas of life, of which people normally ascribe to intelligence, that an IQ test doesn't cover. For example, your flaunting of an IQ score you got once is narcissistic and ignorant. I certainly wouldn't call that an intelligent thing to do. And I'm sure you wouldn't normally consider calling someone with a narcissistic personality disorder as intelligent as one without either. I tend to follow Socrates when thinking about who is the most intelligent. If you don't talk on things you don't know about and don't flaunt the fact that you think you're intelligent, you're more intelligent than anyone who does. Depends on What IQ tests you do, really. Raven's Progressive Matrices and Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices are actually incredibly reliable for intelligence/potential intelligence. And both of which I can score quite high in. But I dont entirely base my intelligence on a single IQ test; I agree that that would be incredibly ignorant. I base my intelligence off of a variety of factors. And I must say that I disagree with Socrates there. I honestly doubt that if you heard Stephen Hawkings or Einstein saying to someone "I'm a Genius", you would hardly disagree with them. As they are, in fact, Genii. 'Flaunting' intelligence, as you put it, does not mean you are unintelligent. It just means that you are aware of your intelligence. .Rai
Is this a study? I don't know if it's even long enough to count as an essay. I would have written more, but this is YCM. I'll save the wall of text for a worthwhile course. I'll call it an interactive study.
Dr. Cakey
I would have written more, but this is YCM. I'll save the wall of text for a worthwhile course. I'll call it an interactive study. Ooh, an interactive study. That sounds professional. And I suppose getting a discussion rolling is more interesting. Depends on What IQ tests you do, really. Raven's Progressive Matrices and Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices are actually incredibly reliable for intelligence/potential intelligence. And both of which I can score quite high in. At this point, you would probably have demonstrated a higher degree of social intelligence, as well as more detailed self-knowledge, by simply retracting your initial statement and acknowledging it to be imprecise, overblown, and/or overly general. In regards to awareness of intelligence, I'm reminded of the Buddhist saying, "If you see the Buddha, kill him". In order to reduce the pretentiousness of this post, I will now initiate an emergency deployment of emoticons: :) :) :) :D :P :P
ListenToLife
xD My apologies then. I never professed Social Intelligence to be my strong point. Though, I still do not see why I should retract the statement about me being intelligent in and of itself, but I shall not pursue the debate. I do not wish to start a massive argument. This was the statement: Because I am consistently the most intelligent person around me. What were we talking about again?
ListenToLife
Yes, and I still dont know why I should retract it. :/ It's up to others how they take that statement. I didn't mean it in a 'flaunting' or 'bragging' way. I'm merely stating it because, generally, I am. General Intelligence wise.
Reinforce
We were supposed to be talking about Nerds and their culture. In my opinion, the whole Nerd culture thing is overblown these days, the words are so commonly used now that they are starting to lose their meaning. In respect to what I actually believe them to mean, Nerds would be the smart people, while Geeks are the nerds commonly classed as playing video games, and Otaku is for the anime/manga/comic fans. As for card games, I'm not sure what label to give them, and as for that diagram on the previous page, I only really fit into the inteligent category myself. I am a fan of anime and manga, and of video games, but not so far as to classify it as an obsession, and I refuse to be classed as a geek. I do have some connection to the sort of anime/manga lovers, but wouldn't got as far as to classify that as an obsession either, and I'm not really socially inept. Really, that only part of the diagram I have is intelligence, along with a rather lazy personality, which I think somewhat goes with intelligence when it's found during school, especially since if you need less effort to get a decent grade, you don't put as much work into anything as someone who would require more effort to do something like that. I've had one of my friends get annoyed at me for that so many times, since he put so much effort into his assignments and tests than I did, and yet I still managed to get about the same grades as he did. I've always been one of the smartest people around me, and yet one of the laziest at the same time, so I somewhat understand what you're talking about DWG. I've never taken an IQ test to prove it, but I am one of the smartest people I know. Anyway, everyone should know this terrible joke already, but "Do you know what you call nerds later in life? Boss."
Aix
DaWeirdGuy, no one can help but feel you're bragging when you say your smarter than them. I agree that nerd thing is overblown and I don't really get it: where does it become obsession? Where's the line there? Classified nerds, imo, are people who don't talk a lot about social stuff and prefer to talk about either science and maths and intellectual stuff. Geeks are the same but talk about video games, comics and whatnot?
~ P O L A R I S ~
Nerds aren't smart, they're just socially inept. And they certainly don't become bosses, that's a position for slick yes-men who usually end up depressed because of all the integrity they compromised for power. Nerds, conversely, get depressed when they discover that there's no living to be made in their autistic obsessions that they forewent social aptitude for in the first place. Getting along with people in moderation is best, that way, you maintain some of your principles without being a barricaded xenophobe. Also, Agro is right and DaWeirdGuy is not. Any validation derived through inflated IQ test scores (yep, they're not more accurate because you happen to score higher on them) will be shattered. You'll have to come to terms with your stupidity eventually. You can start by reading "The Republic". As an added bonus, people won't be able to come along and crucify you for pretending you're smart when you don't know who Socrates is.
ListenToLife
Whoever said I dont know who Socrates is? I just said I disagree with him. And I never said I was entirely deriving intelligence from the IQ tests, they were just one part of the thing. But it doesn't matter. This was a dead argument, and I dont really want to bring it back up.
Darth Neil
So anyone here ever went to their local game/card store and met any "fake nerds"? Yes, It annoys me to no end. One time i saw this guy who looked like he could bench his car loudly proclaiming that he was "one of us", and threatening anyone who said different.
