Up to twice per turn, during your Main Phase 1: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to target 1 Special Summoned monster your opponent controls; destroy that target, and if that target was an Xyz Monster, inflict damage to your opponent equal to its original ATK.

 

Because someone said to me that if this were rank 4 it would be perfectly fine and not broken. Also because I think it's fantastic. Discuss.

Well, actually...

 

Nah, it would be kinda broken as a 4. Stats would fit but instant 2 pops + potential burn are way too much.

 

Still, it feels underwhelming for a Rank 8.

its main issue is stats, like most rank 8's. that effect is a game changer though, easily.

It's only problem as a Rank 8 is the stats of 1500 ATK and 2500 DEF, both very low for costing 2 Level 8s. But its effect is SOOOO good, able to kill any 2 SSed monsters and burning full ATK if it was an Xyz. Sadly, it's only for MP1, but it's excellent nonetheless.

 

Also, the card that made IV awesome, and reassured me that the Zexal writers could write good stuff still after about 6 filler episodes.

To be fair, Fusion, 2500 DEF is pretty solid for something that basically wrecks the Opponent's field.

Although, they could troll us at the last minute and name it Giant Assailant

"during your Main Phase 1:" that restricts it alot more than it should be...but it's a very nice card and a very useful tech in Dark Worlds or decks that can spam Level 8s easy.

I think it's the second best Rank 8, or at least of generic ones.

 

The effect is a lot like Volca in that in wins games, even if it seems underwhelming for a non Gimmick Puppet deck to use, give you are generally trading two stronger mosters for it.

If it were a rank 4, at least you could get around its terrible attack with Extra Sword.

What is it with people wanting Rank 8's to be Rank 4's nowadays?

 

It's really really annoying.

 

People seem to just look at Rank 8's, not thinking that they are used differently to lower ranks because of the materials. Level 8 monsters generally do all the heavy lifting, this is just there to help in a pinch, or burn for game like Volca in some situations. All the good Rank 8's are about dealing with situations that the level 8's can't break through.

 

The fact it's only got 1500 ATK doesn't matter hugely, when it exists solely for the pop 2 and potential burn.

I ran this in some weird Geargia Mash deck that used Clockwork Shinigamis for Rank 8s.

That's true, the DEF is nice. The ATK is pretty bad, though, since most Level 8s that are easily Summoned have more ATK or a solid effect. Combined, looking at ATK and DEF, it doesn't seem worth the investment of two powerful monsters. This isn't as big a deal anymore, since Rank 8s have quite a bit of support now with cards like Radius and Galaxy cards.

 

And if you're wrecking the opponent's Field, maybe you want to capitalize on that by attacking with Giant Killer.

 

As for Giant Killer vs Giant Grinder...no problem with it, I'm just used to Giant Killer.
