E-Begging

I made this topic because of this particular video

For those of you who don't know, E-Begging is a term for famous internet celebrities who ask their fans to give them money to fund a big project they will be making soon.

So yeah, what are your thoughts on E-Begging and do you think it should or shouldn't be done?

That word you're using, E-Begging. I don't like it. What does it matter if your a celebrity asking for donations for a project? Does it have much difference from a KickStarter? I don't think so. E-Begging is blown out of proportion half of the time when it's not even begging unless you consider KickStarter and all similar sites begging. If it's not bad for a person who's creating this, but not famous, why should it be bad if someone's famous?

I think it's great for people who actually need it, like indie devolopers. I like Ashen's stuff, and wish the best for him. There's not much else to it in my book, I mean I can choose to not donate if it's a scam or if I simply don't want to support he project.

EDIT: About the whole AVGN thing, I get why people didn't like it, supporting a project to make a sequal to a horrible game is not really something most would probably pay for. I remember the same happening to a Bad Dudes reboot project, but not sure if it finished or not.

No difference really than all the Kickstart projects, but with this fans aren't going to get anything back other than the chance to watch it.

I'm on the fence about this although I did put $20 towards funding for SOiL's new albums, but for that I get a digital and physical copy of the cd and 3 weeks early too. (If I remember that all correctly.)

except doesn't Kickstarter require you to put requirements for the tier of money you give? Like get credited, get some swag, get a role in the thing and so on?

Not entirely. It applies to anybody who asks for money online, though it's the bigger internet personalities who get more flak for it.

That's not the only reason. The other thing is that a fan-fixed version of Cheetahmen 2 that plays properly is already available and free to download on the internet as a rom. Apparently, this project was to just put that rom on a cartridge.

The only decent argument I've heard supporting the Cheetahmen kickstarter is that it appeals to retro game collectors who like the games on cartridges.

Oh well that's just dumb then, at least by making a sequal it could have been a better game, even if poking fun at the original, but just that? No thanks.

E-Begging is a good description of what the action itself is, but all the same it is a completely loaded term, rather like "pro-choice" or "pro-life." Lots of people do it, if you don't want to donate to whatever cause is in vogue, then just ignore it. I'm sure you've got better things to do than moan about something as trivial as this, when there are so many things you could do to actually change things that matter. If a celebrity is begging for cash, it means that the project they are working is too expensive to be bankrolled by said person alone and too niche for a studio to want to make it, in which case it's probably something edgy and interesting. If an "e-celebrity" (how I despise that term) is asking for some of the green stuff, it's probably because, like all people who are "internet-famous", they have no money.
