OVERLOAD MONSTERS What's an Overload Monster? No worries, I'll explain everything about Overload Monsters and both Limit and Overload Summoning to you - - but first of all: Here you go, an Overload Monster: (This bad guy is one of the most impressive ones.) What's special about Overload Monsters? - They are stored in the Extra Deck. (Just as Fusion, Synchro and Xyz Monsters.) - They have a Limit, not a Level. (Similar to an Xyz Monster's Rank, but then again not really.) - Their effects vary - often they have huge drawbacks when Limit Summoned, but become better and better with each OVERLOAD State. (I'll explain all that later.) Well then - the basic way to Summon an Overload Monster is the Limit Summon. (NO, not the Overload Summon - we'll get to that later.) How do you Limit Summon? - You need face-up monsters in your Monster Card Zone as Limit Materials. - You can use as many Limit Materials as you want. - The combined Level of your Limit Materials has to be at least as high as the Overload Monster's Limit. - If the combined Level of the Limit Materials is higher than the Overload Monster's Limit, it doesn't matter in any way. - You cannot use more Limit Materials than you need. (Example: LT8 OL Monster. On field: LV4, LV4, LV10. You can use "LV4 + LV4" or "LV4 + LV10" in this case - so it's allowed to go beyond the needed combined Level even if you wouldn't need to do so, but as soon as the requirements are fulfilled, you cannot use another additional Material.) - The Limit Materials are then sent to the Graveyard and the Overload Monster is Limit Summoned in face-up Attack or Defense Position. - In rare cases, they have restrictions considering what monsters can be used as Limit Materials, which is shown by a text beginning with "RESTRICTION:" at the beginning of the effect text. ("RESTRICTION: Only DARK monsters" or "RESTRICTION: No Fiend-type monsters", for example.) Now you might ask: Why are they called Overload Monsters if you Limit Summon them? Well, that's because you can also Overload Summon them! I guess you could say an Overload Summon is an extended Limit Summon. It gives you more tactical room and kind of lets you "design" the Overload Monster the way you could use and affort it best. I'll explain what I mean... How do you Overload Summon? - You do everything you would do to Limit Summon the Overload Monster. - Now you need Monster Cards in your hand or on your side of the field as Overload Materials. (It doesn't matter if they are face-up or face-down.) - You can use as many Overload Materials as you want. - An Overload Material's Level doesn't matter in any way. (Just as all other stats don't matter, it just needs to be a "real" Monster Card - no Trap or Token Monsters and such things.) - The Overload Materials are then sent to the Graveyard and the Overload Monster is Overload Summoned in face-up Attack or Defense Position. IMPORTANT: As soon as you use Overload Materials, it is an Overload Summon. Without Overload Materials, it's a Limit Summon! IMPORTANT: Overload Summons and Limit Summons are Special Summons, just as Fusion, Synchro or Xyz Summons! Now that we know all that, there's only one thing left... the OVERLOAD State! What is the OVERLOAD State? - If you use Overload Materials and Overload Summon instead of Limit Summon, the Overload Monster has a so called OVERLOAD State. - The amount of Overload Materials used defines the OVERLOAD State. (1 Material = OVERLOAD I, 2 Materials = OVERLOAD II etc...) - Overload Monsters have their effects enhanced and altered in most cases, depending on what OVERLOAD State they're in. (There are also some that get ATK / DEF boosts and such things.) IMPORTANT: An Overload Monster at OVERLOAD V, for example, also benefits from the OVERLOAD I, II, III and IV bonuses! Okay, that would be all! It may seem complicated... but once you get the hang of it, it's actually quite simple, a hell of a lot of fun to play and a nice new strategic way to go. A Limit Summon would be like a field-only Ritual Summon, only without the need of a Ritual Spell. Then an Overload Summon means you also invest cards from your hand in order to enhance the Overload monster's abilities, like Kicker/Multikicker in MtG. A little issue I'm seeing here is that the fact that you're investing a fair bit of card advantage if you want to make full use of these Overload monsters. Take your example, which requires a minimum of 4 cards to fully unlock, and about 5 to 6 in normal gameplay. It'll be likely that few would find the worth in making such a huge investment, and stick with the base Limit Summon. Unless there was a more efficient way to unlock the Overload modifiers...
