Number 88: Gimmick Puppet of Leo

Recommended Posts

I actually almost won with this in a character tournament once but Professor Banner happened to topdeck Dark Hole when I had 2 counters. I tried it again and then he drew Grand Convergence.

The moral of the story is that this card isn't even good in a casual environment.

Let's look at the 3 Material Rank 8s.

First up is Giantrainer, with a solid 2800 that's pretty bad for the investment, but you can detach its Overlays up to 3 times per turn, draw a card, keep the card, and deal 800 per monster card drawn by that effect. The resource replenishment and burn damage is what makes it respectable.

Next up is Gimmick Puppet of Leo...decent 3200 ATK, but each turn, you detach an Overlay and give it a counter. If you have 3 counters, you win. To use the effect, you must control no S/Ts, and you can't attack. Slow, but balanced, if a bit gimmicky.

And then you look at Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon with an amazing 4500 ATK, the ability to negate all face-up cards if Galaxy-Eyes was a Material, and for an Overlay, you absorb all your opponent's Xyz Material, Neo Galaxy gains 500 each and can attack up to that many times that turn. In other words...it WINS GAMES.

I just can't imagine using the effort to Summon Destiny Leo and then stall 3 turns while praying they don't troll me by waiting until it has 2 counters, then going into Number 11: Big Eye while laughing maniacally.

Alternatively, using MIND CONTROL on a 2-counter Destiny Leo.

I find it annoying they felt they had to change the one Gimmick Puppet Number that didn't have a name that would need changing, a wood chipper in its chest, or a creppy harp for a stomach. Destiny Leo's anime effect makes it by far the most powerful Number IN THE ANIME. Too bad its junk irl. I've seen people win with before, but its easier said thn done. Still more balanced than Eoxida and Countdown. There are just so many on options when you have 3 Level 8s.

So is it a rule of thumb that bad cards must have awesome artwork? Cause that's definitely the case here.

OT: *parrots everyone else* Too much work put in, better options, etc. He would be an awesome beatstick if NGEPGD wasn't a better option. And on top of that, his effect is rendered null and void vs cards like Temtempo and Veiler (assuming he's chained to activation or his effect works in the same vein as Spell Counters).
