Could Planechase work in YGO?

Recommended Posts

This might have a bit to do with CC, so if the mods feel like AoC is a better place for this topic, go ahead and move it.

I do try to diverse from YGO from time to time, so I tried to play a big of MTG 2013 on Steam the other day, and there's still a lot I don't really get about it, but I did try this mode called Planechase, and it was actually pretty neat. If you don't know how it works, there's always a card in play which has special effects, then each player can roll a die, which might trigger an effect or chance the card to something else. It's pretty interesting and mixes up the gameplay quite a bit. Anyway, I was wondering, could something like this work in the YGO environment? There's already Field Spells that work for both players (though Konami seems to forget that part) but this is more dedicated. I also wonder how the whole die thing would work, as in Planechase, you use your Lands, but YGO doesn't really have that, so how would that work? Since LP aren't that big of a deal anymore, making you pay for them seems like it would work the best, as it stops a player from doing it too much (in Magic you pay nothing the first time, 1 Land the second, 2 lands the 3rd and so on). This is of course not something that should be in every game, just like how it isn't in every MTG match, but only a for little thing you can do, like Turbo Duels, or what ever those were called in 5D's.

EDIT: Below is how it could work possibly:

1. Deck of 50-60 cards (I think it's 60 in MTG).
2. A six-sided die, 4 Blank Spaces that do nothing, 1 Effect Space (Logo/Name ideas?) and 1 Card Turn Spaces (An arrow of some sort, which when rolled, the card in play with be put on the bottom, and the next card will be played). Was also thinking of 2 Blank Spaces, 2 Effect Spaces and 2 Card Turn Spaces, which do you think works better?
3. 2 Effects on the card. 1 is for both players always, and 1 for the player who rolled the Effect Space.
4. Pay nothing the first time you use it (per turn) 500 the next, 1000 the next, 1500 the next and so on.
5. Rolling can only be used doing the Main Phases.
6. Only 1 card (not sure what to call it yet) can be active at once.
7. You cannot destroy or do anything to these cards, except for if the cards have effects that do stuff to them, or affect them (I remember a Plane that said something like, "look at the top Plane, and put it at the bottom or leave it at the top" or something close to that).

Anything else?

I've never played magic the gathering before, but I have played yu-gi-oh games with modded rules similar to what you're proposing, it does make the game more fun, but i'm not sure it's the best way to go about rebalancing the game. although it would be a fun start, and an influence outside of the players decks might help lower the level of broken decks. so if you ever manage to fine-tune the details to the current gamestate and get the chance to test it please tell us how it goes.

You could try it with Field Spells, since the Plane Cards in Planechase are pretty similar to Field Spells.

That's kind of why I thought of this, though if you take a look at some of the fields, they only really support your Deck. No, I would rather have a whole bunch of new cards that are totaly random with various game changing effects, such as no attack Defense Position monsters or when you roll an Effect Space you would turn all monsters face-down and other stuff.
