100 Single Challenge: Pop Culture Edition [6/100]

Recommended Posts

For those of you who suffered through my 100 Single Challenge in the Realistic Card section, you will notice a similarity here. I will once again embark on a challenge to create 100 singles, but this time based on some form of Pop Culture. Despite my use of the word 'Single' I doubt that I will be able to make each card stand alone, so do expect some 'mini-sets' within this challenge. This challenge, unlike my last one, will be agglomerated in this post.

Like my previous challenge, this challenge is meant to further my skills as a card maker as well as boost activity in this thread. I haven't been around Pop Culture much, but a majority of what I have seen I am not too pleased with. I hope this challenge will help and inspire others, and if not, well I am sorry that you will be forced to bare witness to another of Renegade's 100 Single Challenges!
• EN001 - Joey Wheeler, the Underdog
 • EN002 - Kirby, Dream Land Warrior
 • EN003 - Annabeth Chase, Child of Athena
 • EN004 - Toonami
 • EN005 - Elemental HERO Static Shock
 • EN006 - Mega Evolution

EN001-JoeyWheelertheUnderdog.png

Once per turn, when you draw a Normal Monster: You can reveal it; target 1 face-up monster you control, other than this card. Then, increase the ATK of the targeted monster equal to the revealed monster's ATK, until the End Phase. You cannot Summon the revealed monster this turn. During either player's turn, except during the Battle Phase: You can Tribute this face-up card, then Special Summon 1 Normal Monster from your Graveyard. The Special Summoned monster cannot be destroyed by card effects until your next End Phase.
The beloved underdog of classic Yu-Gi-Oh!, Joey is known for his use of powerful monsters and his astounding lack of spells and strategy. Often connected with the card Heart of the Underdog, here we see Joey in his true form. Able to be comboed with Heart of the Underdog, Joey opens the way for powerful beatsticks and last chance saves.

EN002-KirbyDreamLandWarrior.png?t=137436

When this card is Normal Summoned or Flipped Summoned: You can discard 1 card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; equip it to this card. This card's Level is treated as that of the equipped monster. During either player's turn, except during the Battle Phase: You can destroy the equipped monster; this card's ATK, DEF, and effect become that of the destroyed monster until the End Phase.
Everyone loves the little pink fur ball! The iconic Dream Land Warrior hardly needs an introduction. Able to inhale his foes and copy their abilities, Kirby is the very epitome of versatile. Opening the way for powerful Xyz plays or taking down boss monsters, Kirby embraces the versatility that is seen in ever platform he is featured.

EN003-AnnabethChaseChildofAthena.png?t=1EN003-AnnabethChaseChildofAthenaAlt.png?

You can destroy 1 face-up Spell or Trap Card you control; place this card in your hand face-up in an open Spell & Trap Card Zone on your opponent's side of the field. This card is still treated as being under your control. If there is a monster in the Monster Card Zone directly in front of this card in the Spell & Trap Card Zone: You can destroy it and Special Summon this card to your side of the field.
Featured in the books of Rick Riordan, Annabeth Chase finds herself in the third seat of my Pop Culture Challenge. Known for her brains as well as her prowess, Annabeth lives up to being the child of Athena. Strategy and skill are the defining characteristics in this young demigod. Using the gift of her mother, Annabeth is able to turn invisible by using the hat that she wears. Allies of hers will report monsters dying for no reason in battle, but those that know Annabeth know that her invisible dagger found its mark yet again.

EN004-Toonami.png?t=1375202751

This card cannot attack directly the turn it is Summoned. If "Toon World" on the field is destroyed, destroy this card. While you control "Toon World" and your opponent controls no Toon Monsters, this card can attack your opponent directly. When this card is Summoned while you control a face-up "Toon World": You can reveal 1 Level 6 or higher Toon Monster in your hand; Special Summon it regardless of Summoning conditions, then this card's Level becomes equal to the Level of the revealed monster. The Special Summoned monster's effect is negated and it cannot declare an attack. If this card is destroyed: Destroy any face-up monsters Special Summoned by this card's effect.
Those of you familiar with the bad-ass host of Toonami should be overjoyed with the creation of this card. Not only does his name supply the needed requirements to make a Toon monster, it just fits perfectly. I made this card because I was looking for something to different to create, not just another character. Obviously this card is meant to help the Toons out a bit for Xyz plays. I know that Toons are often seen as a laughable project to undertake, but anyone that has seen my other Toon cards that I have created will know that it is very much possible to turn Toons into top tier material.

EN005-ElementalHEROStaticShock.png?t=137EN005-ElementalHEROStaticShockAlt.png?t=

If the Special Summon of a "HERO" monster is negated: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. Once per turn: You can reveal 1 "HERO" Fusion Monster in your Extra Deck, then send 1 "HERO" monster from your Deck to the Graveyard that is an appropriate Fusion Material Monster for the revealed monster; all face-up monster with the same Attribute as the monster sent to the Graveyard have their effects negated and cannot declare an attack until your opponent's next End Phase
If the Special Summon of a "HERO" monster is negated: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. Once per turn: You can reveal 1 "HERO" Fusion Monster in your Extra Deck, then send 1 monster from your Deck to the Graveyard that is listed as a Fusion Material monster on the revealed monster; all face-up monster with the same Attribute as the monster sent to the Graveyard have their effects negated and cannot declare an attack until your opponent's next End Phase

Well after a long wait, the 5th card is up. Upon request, I created a card belonging to the HERO archetype. Now, it has been awhile since I dabbled in the heroics, but I think the card captures their style fairly well. Static Shock, like any hero, would respond to a cry for help, thus being able to be special summoned upon having another "HERO" negated. The second effect can be used in conjunction with Miracle Fusion as well as any reborning card. The last effect is supposed to be symbolic of shocking an opponent, essentially paralyzing them for a short amount of time. I am a little rusty, so any suggestions and/or OCG fixes are greatly appreciated.

EN006-MegaEvolution.png?t=1376263039

Can only be activated during the Battle Phase, except during the Damage Step: Discard 1 card and banish 1 face-up monster you control; Special Summon 1 monster from your Deck with a higher Level and the same Attribute as the banished monster. The Special Summoned monster cannot declare an attack this turn.* You cannot Special Summon any other monsters this turn. If the Special Summoned monster would be removed from the field: It is banished, instead. Each player can only activate 1 "Mega Evolution" per turn.*

*Italicized: Subject to modification and/or deletion.
Well for those Pokemon Fanatics out there, I am sure you will appreciate this card, and for those of you who don't keep up to speed with everything Pokemon, let me be the first to tell you(although if you are just hearing it from me now, you probably don't care) that Pokemon is once again widening its horizons. Confirmed by CoroCoro this August, a new form of evolution, dubbed Mega Evolution, will be taking place in the new Pokemon X & Y games. While full details have not yet been released, it is clear that Mega Evolution will only happen during battle and that a specific item is needed for the evolution of the select Pokemon lucky enough to have this as an option for them. How this is represented in the card should be fairly obvious, so I won't insult your intelligence by trying to explain it, I will however ask your opinion.

You probably noticed the change in format for the display of the card. As noted underneath the card, words in italics are subject to change. This is because of the danger of having a card like this. It opens up pathways to easy summoning of boss monsters. The first phrase in italics is in question because I fear that it may make the special summoned monster virtually useless. With the vast number of ways to bounce/destroy/banish monsters nowadays, it isn't exactly difficult to get rid of a monster once it does take the field. Of course, then the question of OP'edness comes into play if that restriction is removed. The same problem applies to the last word of the card. Should it be 'Duel' or 'turn'? Give me your opinion, guys!

Great card! I like the PC section but people over here not taking it serious and most of the times they are using LQ pics for the cards. But you are using HQ templates and up to now, you didn't take a screenshot from the anime for this card and I like how you treat those cards seriously. I would like to see more cards from you!

About the card: I wouldn't say it is over-powered but it is certainly a STRONG card.

In all honesty, it probably needs to be switched to once per turn now that I think about it. Heart of the Underdog could keep happening and as long as you had a monster on the field you could just keep discarding for more and more ATK. Thank you for your comment liavcol and I agree with you 100%. I am fairly disappointed in what has been going on in PC and I am hoping to change that.

With Joey having already been looked at, I will take a crack at Kirby:

Flavour: I am very much so surprised with how flavourful you've made Kirby! I think the Type well suits Kirby to a tee, since he does resemble somewhat of a Sprite. His effect, too, is rich with Kirby's taste, as it is conveyed in such a manner to defeat the need of creating a Sword Kirby or any of his other Copy Abilities. Even his stats, too, seem to be akin to Kirby, what with his Damage Output being no greater than his Defensive abilities in his basic form. This card has been the best Kirby I have seen.

Balance: The effect must target a face-up Monster, which is good since it prevents the opportunity to overpower a Set monster which would really be in bad taste. The manner to "Copy" the Abilities is also definitely balanced as it enables you to make use of an opponent's monster for your own uses. Also, it can make Kirby more battle-savvy. However, I feel it may be too weak by only being able to be triggered through Normal Summon. I feel that it should be able to be triggered by at least another form of Summoning.

Use: This has its fair uses. It can be played as an Anti-Meta Troll Card for obvious reasons, by snatching an opponent's monster and unlocking Kirby's respective Copy Ability based off of their monster. The primary and most prominent us for Kirby would be in Mirror Matches, of course, and one could easily side Kirby just in case for such an occasion. Outside of Anti-Meta and Mirror Matches, I am not sure where it'd be played! D=

Fixes: Of course, as already mentioned, I think you have been too strict on triggering Kirby's effect and you need to lighten it up (IMO!)

A very, very good spin on Kirby. Very good job man.

Besides the fact that it is potentially morale-boosting for a Moderator to actively participate in their section, it is nice seeing a TCG-savvy individual make an attempt at a Custom Card.

Glad to see that more people are taking interest in this project! First off, thank you for the in depth review, they are always appreciated. It seems like the problem with Kirby is where he would be used, and you are 100% correct in that opinion. Unfortunately, when trying accomplish excellent flavor and playability, something has to slip. Obviously Mirror Matches and Anti-Meta would like Kirby, and aside from that he really wouldn't be anything more than interesting tech, although I do have an interesting idea to be included with Kirby, if I get around to making a little mini-set for him. I will lighten the restriction to any form of summoning, that was just me being cautious. Thank you for the review Kyng, and I hope that you stick around to see this through. Your support will definitely encourage me to do the same! :D

I will try to drop by here every so often and give you encouragement, despite my utter hate for Pop Culture cards.

Joey

A -1 for a temporary boost that needs ANOTHER monster to even trigger. The last effect is the only useful effect on him, offering a nice RotA target for "instant" Normal Monster revival with no cost. This may make him useful in Gemini Decks, as I believe he would slow down Blue-Eyes Decks (they have Bellow anyways), and Gigaplant Decks have other ways of revival that don't consume a Normal Summon to do so. The flavour is really nice, seeing how Heart of the Underdog supports the Underdog monster type, Normal, and Joey himself is an underdog compared to many duelists.

Kirby

Instant removal from a Normal Summon is a bit far, and the fact it works off any Summon goes even farther into the me no want zone. There needs to be a cost (or condition to activate), a discard for Summons in general or perhaps monster banishment if this only triggers from Normal Summons, but as it stands, just Normal Summoning/Monster Reborning/Call of the Haunting something for an instant +1 that has no drawback (none the less has benefits for doing so in most cases) for removal (especially equipping removal) is too far and needs to be toned down. The flavour is really good.

@Kyng, why does the above seem fine too you? Normal Summoning a monster shouldn't be able to get rid of just about ANY monster in the game in such a way. I mean, a monster that says "When this card is Normal Summoned: Destroy 1 face-up monster your opponent controls." would be frowned upon, and equipping monsters your opponent has it far worse for the game as a whole then another destroy effect.

Gah it appears that my love of flavor has gone and done me in. I edited Kirby a bit, hopefully fixing him up a little. What would your recommend I do with Joey?

As for Joey, I think he is fine. Of course, he is inferior to Bellow in Blue-Eyes, but is really good in Gemini I guess. If you feel the need to power him up, I guess you could alter his first effect in some way, like instead of discarding, revealing, or during the Draw Phase, Foolish Burial a Normal Monster for the boost (just random thoughts, any other way around the -1 would be fine also). I think the second effect is right where it should be to be allowed, considering we have Swing/Silent Doom with bigger drawbacks then just using your turn's Normal Summon.

Alright, I edited him a bit. Got rid of the discarding and change it to...well...you'll see.

Trying to check in her when possible to see if ya release any and cheer ya on as I did before with the last 20 or so of your RC-Single Challenge ^^

Anywho---

Annabeth <333 Love em books. I dislike his art, as when I read I imagine the characters to my liking, but eh.

Balance/Playability

Well, it is really balanced. Requiring a self destruction is a hefty toll to pay for such an effect, though that self destruction may be beneficial to some decks making for a very interesting piece. The destruction is conditional, but rewarding, as it provides you a monster and your opponent loses one in the process. Somewhat slow unless instantly executed, but nice none the less. A very casual card, making interesting interactions with things like Geartown/Trench/etc., while still providing a decent 1700 beater if needed.

Flavour/Originality

Well, the daughter of Athena is certainly a tactician. It requires forethought, is a combo piece, and is reliant on the opponent, as all real strategies are when it boils down to it. Very flavourful. Hate that picture of her, again, but I won't nitpick on that. A very original effect, touching upon one of the most least looked at mechanics in the game, the columns.

Suggestions/Additional Comments

Well, none really. I could go to suggest more competitive approachs to her, but I really admire her casual combo piece potential, and would love to make some crappy but fun decks with her and Magical Hats. Good job, Renegade.

Thank you for your comment, Ther! Indeed the picture is lacking, but there aren't too many decent ones out there. If I have time, I'll try to find some alternate art. I think you may be missing the point that this card was intended for however. The Noble Knights. Being a LIGHT Warrior that destroys Spell & Traps, she could add some destructive power to the arsenal. Now obviously she would just be a tech in most cases, but she does have that additional use.

I thought of Noble Knights.

Seeing the card, the conditions, and etc. it wouldn't do good enough to be worthy of a spot in Noble Knights.

The card itself was, in my eyes, more of a casual, table top fun card rather then a competitive card. Thus, my view reflected that perspective. Noble Knights are in no way affiliated with Table top fun times, only competitive scenes (as they're friggin expensive, to an extent). Though, this could be useful in any casual Warrior-Type Deck that utilizes Noble Arms.

On a side note, I definitely like the alt art better, as I don't like Rick's drawing XD

Fair enough. And yeah, the original art is bad, but at the time I hadn't thought to check deviantart.

100 different cards, huh?

How about one for Toriko? Haven't seen any cards for him yet.

Sorry, I have honestly never heard of Toriko, so I will probably not be making any cards that have to do with it. I am trying to stay with what I know, so that I can accurately represent the character as well as keep it as a usable card.

Well, come on! make the 5th card already ;) I would like to see you making a pop culture card but making him a part of an existing archtype (HERO for example)...

Sorry, I have been out of town the last few days and internet was just reestablished a few minutes ago. As for what you are saying, that is kind of what I did with Toonami, but I guess Toons are a bit outdated. Will make a card soon.
