Creative Writing Section Improvement Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to put this post. I am wondering how I can get more views and commentors on my story, because getting views and responses is always hard for me online, not just for writing stories. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy what I have. I just sometimes wished I got more feedback, even if it is negative. Because I really want to publish my story but I need to know how people react to it.

If this post should not be in this thread, please be so kind and move it to an appropriate thread.

How to get more views and comments on Creative Writing stuff...?

Sorry because that's obnoxious, but really, I wouldn't even try here at this point and all I could suggest is enjoy writing for yourself, and if you want to publish and share then try to do it and build a rep on a bigger, more specialised and more dedicated writing forum than here.

We all want more readers and more people commenting on our work, because we're all just greedy and want more people to enjoy what we enjoy, and deep down in the dark we just want people to tell us how good we are. Then maybe there are a few exceptions who are better than that like you say you are who genuinely want the help and critique and to improve. But honestly you aren't going to find any help here. Right now the CC section is going through a similar dirge, not so much in terms of inactivity but in terms of quality, but that might possibly be salvaged, and at the very least it will always be somewhat active. That's because the first place all new members are gonna go is to the cardmaker that they googled or were actively looking for in the first place. Whether they disperse into other sections from there or leave or actually do the unthinkable and go on to improve and get somewhat reasonable from there depends, but this section is a niche with a regular userbase of maybe what... less than twenty people come here on a regular base, maybe? One thread aside? Ten of whom have never given a word of advice critisism or thanks in their life and wouldn't know where the post button was if it didn't flash naked in front of them might I add.

I'm telling you now. Advertising in the status bar? Doesn't work. Rep bribes for comments? Doesn't work. Asking nicely? Pfft, please really. Bullying and abuse? Yeah I've tried that and it did more harm than good really.

Really unless you either include rampant sex (no disrespect to Thar as the Pairings is the only good thing about the section that's active right now), or your fic is so bad that it's an easy target for trolls, because people are suddenly all too happy to comment then; you're never gonna get any more than maybe four or five people regularly comment on here. And if you get that then that's great, really now. Take four or five people while you've got them and make them feel loved and appreciated and stick with you, because I know I've insulted and abused and pissed off half of my readers by being a jackass in my frustration at this subject.

Now this all probably sounds like really sour grapes on my part and you know what frankly it is alright and I'll take cream on mine thank you, but I'm just telling you and everyone else how it is; and that's this section is never gonna change. And no amount of brave rallying cries and inspirational 'we must act and revive the CW section posts' like this thread is gonna do s***. Okay? I've heard about this Showcase community there supposedly was 'back in the day' where all the members of that section worked together and built a tight knit group, and I honestly don't know of it so can't comment. But I've seen so many attempts to replicate that here and that's wonderful, that's lovely that there's a few people who try to make it better just as people try to make RC better, but they fail, okay? You can't change people and make them better, okay?

I'm gonna try and end positive and just advice you to just enjoy writing for yourself, okay. Write what you want to and do it for you. If it makes you happy for 2-3 other people to enjoy it as well than that's great and maybe one day you'll get that here. But the days of getting a dedicated hardcore following of double figures who all post and give you any feedback of any level are gone, alright? So just write for you, and anyone else who likes what you write treat as a bonus, and anyone who'll post to help you and give you honest feeback and make you a better write treat like f***ing goldust. Because those people are about that rare, and are about that valuable.

So anyway, shall we trade reviews here? No we're not forming some strict economy, I'm just going to put up a thread that let's you ask for reviews while saying you'd be willing to review something in exchange. And if there's nothing to review, you can save your free review for when you do have something you want reviewed. As for equality of reviews, not everyone is equally good at reviewing, so I'm probably going to put up a basic guideline for reviews, but it's up to you guys to help others improve and chat it out in order to come to an agreement and I only step in if you can't. Sound fair? Anyone willing to go with this?

If this might work, then great sure. Of course some people give longer/more in-depth/detailed feedback than others, but that doesn't bother me in the slightest. Even short reviews and people just expressing what they like or don't like about a story and giving any information can be helpful sometimes, compared to nothing but silence at least.

I'm happy to look over things and usually comment on them anyway, and certainly wouldn't expect anybody to analyise the entirity of Ice Queen in return for a review of a one-shot (would be a bit much to ask). But I don't want everyone hammering my inbox with "please beta this for me." Sorry, I've got more pressing IRL issues (as has everyone), will get to it when I can get to it and not before. If I read it I'll usually comment on it.

*sigh*

I think in all honesty: what frustrates me and what some people don't seem to realise is that it can take people, and not just me but several people; weeks to plan, duelscript if YGO, write, proofread, edit, and everything else just to do one chapter sometimes and make it as good as it can be, especially when we stupidly decide to start publishing and feel expectations and pressure and stuff. Sure not everyone has the ability to give massive indepth analysis.

But everyone has the ability to post saying "I am enjoying this keep going :) " from time to time, and that only takes two minutes. Even a small post like that can work wonders, especially for newer members. I think some people just need to be a bit more curteous.
