The architects and project heads ARE paid. Although, even if we say slave, it's more of a volunteer work. At that time, the pharaoh was regarded as god, so the Ancient Egyptian masses think of it as a mission from God, and not necessarily do it against their will. No, I'm pretty sure at least half of them were forced to as slaves. =D Really neat picture in my World History book showing how they ship the limestone(?) slabs on boats, then have slaves DRAG them across a ROAD ALLLL the way to the Pyramid and up its ramps.
