"Spawn Camper": I'm not done yet, not by a long shot

Stan Alda

Recommended Posts

Thought you had seen the last of me, did you? I figured I might as well get back into the swing of things, so here is another Stan Alda lightweight. It's nothing too special; I made it in a matter of minutes. But it's been a while since I was last here, so I'm probably a bit rusty.

It's essentially a living Trap Hole, with different effects based on what position it is in. Once flipped, its effect is weaker, and it is open to attack.

Spawn Camper

DARK

Level 3

Warrior/Effect

FLIP: When your opponent Summons a monster: Banish that monster; this monster cannot be destroyed by battle during the turn it is Flip Summoned. When you control this face-up monster: when your opponent Summons a monster: Destroy that monster.

1600/0

PROS:

  • Extremely annoying anti-Summon effects

CONS

  • Lousy ATK and 0 DEF
  • Effects are worthless against monsters that are already on the field
  • Vulnerable to card effects

I'm... not understanding the effect.

Or, I'm not understanding how this is a flip effect. Flip effects happen when a monster is flipped. Not... "when your opponent Summons a monster".

Also, it's pretty silly and overpowered. Some cards destroy special summoned monster. This one destroys every monster that's not set. It's stats are pretty great for a level 4 too.

OK, I'll try to clarify:

  • This monster's Flip Effect is only supposed to work when you flip it response to an opponent's summon, unlike "Man-Eater Bug", which works whenever it is flipped. I'm not sure how the OCG would work for a situation like this, so I approximated. Feel free to correct me.
  • *cough*Spells*cough*Traps*cough*Monsters your opponent already controls*cough*Negation effects*cough*. I'll lower the ATK (maybe lower its Level and get rid of the Tuner classification as well), but it's far from unbeatable. It has absolutely 0 defenses aside from stopping summons.

EDIT: Reduced its ATK to 1600, got rid of the Tuner classification, and decreased its level to 3.

That's not how flip / FLIP effects work. You can't flip monsters you control in response to Summons. Using outside sources like Book of Taiyo work on cards like Ryko / Man-Eater Bug because they destroy something when they're flipped, unlike this card.

OK, I think I get it. So how do I fix the OCG to reflect that? Simply getting rid of the "FLIP" portion would produce an equally nonsensical effect. Would a Morphtronic-esque rewording work, or would I need something else entirely?

That's not how FLIP effects work. Also, banishing the opponent's monster as cost is pretty ridiculous. It would be much more balanced if worded this way:

When your opponent Summons a monster(s) while this card is in face-down Defense position: Flip this card into face-up Attack Position and target that monster(s); Banish that monster(s). Once per turn, when your opponent Special Summons a monster: Change this card to Defense position; Destroy that monster.

Still doesn't seem very balanced to me but the effect makes sense now and the second effect doesn't serve as a catch-all.

Jesus fucking Christ. How hard is it not to know that monster effects can not activate while face-down?

Someone has their panties in a bunch. Konami has broken the rules before with handtraps, this is no different.

This, I actually agree with. The online rulebook iirc states that if a card's effect contradicts the game's general rules the card will ALWAYS take priority (Take for example the artifacts. You can't normally set monsters in the spell/trap card zones but their effects state otherwise.)
