Me!Me!Me! & Addiction

a bad post

Recommended Posts

First thing's first I will not be posting the music video due to its extremely explicit nature, and I considered posting the Fine Bros. version which is censored I found that even that might get me in trouble.

But I'd like to from you guys do you think that this song has any meaning or message that it's trying to get across. In the Fine Bros. video they talked about how a common interpretation of the video is that it's a criticism of otaku lifestyle/culture, in this sense defining otaku as a person who is antisocial, never goes out, and has an unhealthy obsession with anime, video games, the internet, etc.

Personally I feel that the meaning of the video is lost with all the nudity and the general shock value of the video, and honestly the first time I watched it just myself without the Fine Bros. video I was disturbed, and didn't give it a second thought. Though after watching the Fine Bros. video I can say that I appreciate the deeper meaning, though I still can't get past the fact that the content disturbed me.

As for the meaning of the song I feel that it really hits home for me, because I know there are a lot of times where I've just sat up in my room all day and watched anime, or played video games, and just have not had any human interaction at all. I mean I joke all the time about how I've watched a whole season or series in one day, and honestly even though I know that's hardly healthy I do it anyways.

For anybody who hasn't seen the video, and just wants to hear the song (because honestly I think the song itself is pretty good, or at least really catchy) I've posted the video down below.

Anyway discuss.

What I gathered from the original short was that the main character abandoned his girlfriend for 2d women which is not something that actually happens ever.

That's just my $.01 though.

Whoa whoa

Really?

What kind of delusional bastard would dump his girlfriend for a fictional female?

That sounds incredibly hilarious, yet incredibly sad at the same time.

Since Giga was once addicted to this video the title is hilariously accurate

Okay serious time. For this in specific, the issue I have with the shock/nudity stuff...isn't the nudity and whatnot itself, it's just that it becomes difficult to take seriously for many people. Now I know that hidden messages and such are cool things. But sometimes going too overboard is...well, too overboard.

Addiction itself...yeah that's no good. I don't know if I can say there's anything I really got addicted to but I've seen it a lot. And it's scary. Really can't think well right now so leaving it at that.

I just saw the video today! Wow, that was shocking. Like LordCowCow said, I was addicted to it. It's weird because I'm sorta of against porn. My opinion: they did this video to deliver a message and I think it did deliver a message: Don't be addicted to computers. It is an issue I'm dealing with because I spend 6-8 hours on the weekends on my laptop Saturday and Sunday. I still love the music, though.

Bitch, I might be.

Anyway, as for the video. As with many things of this sort there are multiple ways of interpreting the meaning. My interpretation is a sort of story:

Boy has girlfriend
Boy and girl have some pretty freaking awesome times
Boy cannot handle the emotional commitment, and breaks up with girl
Boy begins to feel empty due to the new gap in his life
Boy fills gap with anime, which is implied by the first movement to be hentai
Boy thoroughly obsesses over the stuff, and buys enough figurines to distract me from the the point of all this symbolism, and making me really jealous
Boy remembers only the sexual aspect of his relationship with the girl, and mentally transforms her into the monster we first see at the tone change in the first movement
Boy realizes that this whole way of life is kinda messed up, and thinks about how the relationship ended, remembering a photo of him and the girl that showed the quirky, emotional part of their relationship
Boy tries to grab hold of this memory, but is nearly eaten alive by the monster he has constructed of his memories
Boy motivates himself to try and fight against all of this shit
Though he succeeds at first, he realizes that he is fighting a losing battle, and tries to tackle all of it at once
HE LOSES HIS MOTHER FUCKING HEAD.
The last shot perfectly matches the first, creating the implication that he fights against what his life has become repeatedly, nonstop even

Tl;dr this is not about addiction, it is about relationships.

There is a reason I watch this video all the time. In my opinion, it is wonderfully crafted, and speaks to me more personally than I would like to admit.

Thank you, Elly, for posting this.

Your welcome Giga, by the way it's nice to see you back.

That is a really new interpretation that I hadn't thought of, see I always thought that the girlfriend was like his idealized version of what a girl would be, but your explanation also makes a really good point.

I'm really glad that this has generated some good discussion though.

Yeah, I don't know if the video was intended to be pornographic in of itself but it seems as if it included included pornographic elements as a means of showing how the male psyche interacts with them and the consequences involved with substituting reality with fantasy.

I can't speak for everyone, but I do not find anything in that video arousing, and I probably watch it more than any other YCMember. The whole bit just comes off as disturbing, really. ESPECIALLY after the shift in tone halfway through the first movement.

Right, and I should've been more precise in saying that I'm quite sure the video wasn't intended to be pornographic but was meant to highlight the issues of pornography as viewed through the eyes of the male protagonist, but used "I don't know if" instead as a less assertive means of contradicting a previous post specifically referring to the video as porn because for whatever reason I lacked conviction to speak my mind.

I think what I said wasn't exactly what I meant. I sounded like I was saying that the "pornographic" parts had no purpose.

I basically just think it's tricky to get a good balance with shocking images and nudity so that it doesn't take away from the point. Which from what I have seen on reactions to the video, this one had some issues with that.

Um...I'm not sure if I'm making any sense though.
