Pokémon X: A Different Take

[A/N: Welcome to my little Pokémon X fic!

A few things you might want to know:

I tend to humanize my Pokémon. It gives me more wiggle room with interesting personalities, and makes them easier to relate. Besides, this gives me an excuse to ask for gijinkas!

My names are all references to something or other. If you think you've caught one, PM me- I might name-drop you!

This is one of my playthroughs where I traded partway through. So, there will be one party member in particular I obtain earlier than I should, whose name isn't in my usual reference pool. So, double points there.

I left my EXP. Share on, so I didn't have to really try. Like, at all. So, my team here isn't exactly . . . optimized.

I will be referring to myself by my username here, even though I used my real name for my game. I'm not comfortable with any of you knowing my real name.

All that said, on with the show!]

Chapter 1: Or, Why I Have No Friends

I woke, the chirps of a Fletchling echoing in my ears.

I really, really hate mornings, I thought with a sigh. However, I dragged myself out of bed- there was a day to face, and people to meet.

I quickly bade my mother a goodbye- at least, as quickly as I could (I love her, but everything I can swear on she takes forever to stop talking)- and rushed out, ostensibly to meet the new neighbors.

Yeah, right.

Anyway, I ran into several people- including a large, burly hiker who assured me that technology was amazing, as if that was something I didn't know- and continued on my way up through the admittedly beautiful cobblestone roads.

And so, I met a group of people seated around a table I supposed were my age- although I swear that one of the girls looked about 12- and introduced myself.

"Hi. I'm Draconus," I said in as neutral a tone as possible.

"I'm Shauna, and this is Serena, Trevor, and Tierno," the short girl said, pointing around the table.

"I admit, I'm bad with names, so I'll probably remember none of that," I said sheepishly.

"Nicknames!" She continued, oblivious to the fact that I had spoken.

I leaned over to the girl apparently named "Serena". "What is going on with this girl?"

She shrugged. "I just go with it." She smiled. "After all, we should have as many friends as possible, right?"

At this, I simply put my head in my hands and let the Optimism Patrol continue talking. I was having none of it.

Somehow, at the end of it all, I was saddled with escorting Shauna through the forest, with a highly nervous Froakie I named Blacktear (he rolled with it) and zero clue of why I always wound up with the nuts.

[[it truly is a mystery,]] Blacktear said. Apparently I had spoken aloud.

"Swell."
