[Fanfiction] Imperfections, a Yu-Gi-Oh Fanfic

Hey everyone! I'm embarking on yet another project of considerable ambition, this one a competition of sorts with a few . . . acquaintances of mine.

This fic happens to be my entry in said competition . . .

Shall we begin?

Episode 1 - The Fall

The music swelled in triumph as the finals began, and Yuuichi grabbed both of his friends around the shoulders in excitement. This was going to be amazing.

The three of them were huddled together on the couch- watching every moment of the Grand Tournament each year from the Seicho family couch was a tradition, ever since they'd been children. The three of them had a clear favorite . . . Yakukishi Kaga, who'd won the tournament the same year they'd started doing this. He didn't win every year, but when he did win . . . he won big. He was just very satisfying to watch in general, and the three of them would invariably root for him. Even though the event wasn't live, being recorded three full days before it actually aired, the three of them felt like they were offering their spirits to Kaga so he could win.

Three voices spoke in unison with the MC- Kokei Yuuichi, and both Seicho siblings, Jun and Tanya: "Here we are in the final round, with only two competitors remaining! Winner of the Red Docket, Yakukishi Kaga!"

Stepping through a red-painted gate was the man of the hour himself (at least, in Yuuichi's eyes, he was), brushing a mess of wild orange and silver hair aside to regard the camera directly with a wide smile on his face and a sparkle of mischievous glee in his green eyes. Almost as a direct affront to the way age was supposed to work, neither his energy nor his face had changed in the twelve years the trio of friends had been watching.

"And, winner of the Blue Docket, Soraino Oda!" The MC said, minus the echo provided by the trio- the three of them weren't much fans of his, although Tanya admitted outright that she found him attractive. His iron gray eyes stared directly forward, assured and unfeeling, and despite the massive mop of black hair on his head that often obscured his face if he shifted the wrong way, it never seemed to bother him. And, despite how messy that much hair would have to be, his face was so smooth and impassive that he looked like the love interest in a shoujo manga.

Both participants wore the exact same outfit, which was a shock, because each brought their own definite style to it- a long, high-collared jade coat and blue jeans, the former unbuttoned and with collar popped to nearly resemble a cape around Yakukishi's plain black shirt, and buttoned to just below the chin for Soraino and making him look like a high school student.

"DUEL!" The MC screamed, and both competitors brought their Duel Disks before them.

OP

"This is going to be good," Tanya commented with a smirk, and her brother nodded- "I can't wait for that Soraino jerk to be knocked across the arena."

Yuuichi watched in silence, but with a grin on his face- he was confident in his idol.

"I'll go first," Kaga grinned, looking at his hand confidently, "by activating the Field Spell known as the Temple of Endless Aeons!"

With that, a huge green pillar of light appeared in the middle of the field, and eight smaller gray pillars formed a circle around the two Duelists. A series of arches appeared between the pillars, creating what looked like a concrete gazebo with no roof around the pair of Duelists.

"When the Temple of Endless Aeons is activated, we each banish the top card of our Deck," Kaga explained, and during each of my Standby Phases we both take 100 damage for each banished card if we don't control an 'Aeon" monster."

"Because a card was sent to your Banished Zone," Oda interrupted, "I can Special Summon Vigilizard Privateer from my hand."

[Vigilizard Privateer

EARTH - Level 4 - Reptile/Effect - 1600/1200]

A lizard-man in what looked like a white jumpsuit that lit up in a network of blue light appeared in front of the comparatively straight-laced man, with a jetpack on its back and a wicked-looking curved knife in its hand-like front claw.

"Huh. Wasn't expecting that," Kaga grinned, "I'm surprised a monster like that hasn't shown up in any of your other Duels."

"Luck of the draw is a cruel mistress," Oda replied softly.

"It can be," Kaga laughed, "Anyway, I'm also going to Normal Summon Aeon Magician Girl."

All three friends leaned in excitedly, although Yuuichi and Jun were markedly more excited than Tanya, for obvious reasons.

[Aeon Magician Girl

DARK - Level 4 - Spellcaster/Effect - 1600/1200]

A young woman with gleaming azure hair appeared in front of Kaga, dressed in a silver-and-emerald robe and twirling a short silver-and-sapphire rod like a baton. She adjusted a hat playfully on her head, and seemed to almost direct her infectiously bright grin to the camera.

"With her effect, each time a Spell Card is activated, I get to put 1 Aeon Counter on the Temple, which lets me banish 1 card on the field or in the Graveyard, once per turn of course," he explained to his opponent and for the viewers. "So I think I'll use one. Sacred Call of the Aeons lets me draw 2 cards, provided I banish an Aeon monster from my hand. So, bye-bye Aeon Vanguard . . . and hello to an Aeon Counter and two more cards!"

A single ball of silver flame orbited the pillar in the center of the arena, noticeable if inobtrusive, as Kaga pulled two cards from his Deck.

The trio of friends grinned- they had a feeling about where this was going.

"Next, I activate Call of Vessault!" Kaga laughed, "This lets me Special Summon any Aeon monster from my Deck for the low low price of banishing any card in my Graveyard! So, I banish Sacred Call of the Aeons to bring out the one and only Infinite-Eyes Aeon Dragon from my Deck!"

[infinite-Eyes Aeon Dragon

DARK - Level 7 - Dragon/Effect - 2500/2100]

Nearly erupting from the ground was a silver-and-jade dragon, its narrow blue eyes possessing infinity symbols instead of pupils. Its wide wings extended, looking absolutely undeniable in its power as it bellowed in a triumphant roar, whipping the crowd- Yuuichi and friends at home included- into a frenzy.

Almost lost in the excitement was the second Aeon Counter, joining the first in its orbit around the pillar of green light.

"But wait, still not done yet, folks!" Kaga laughed, enjoying his spotlight. "When Sacred Call of the Aeons is banished, I draw a card!" He smirked- in terms of hand advantage, he'd actually not lost much card advantage in building up a fantastic field. "Now for the finale: I banish Aeon Magician Girl from my field with the Temple of Endless Aeons!"

One of the silver orbs of flame latched on to the sorceress, and pulled her into the green pillar at the center of the arena. It honestly looked somewhat horrifying as the beautiful young woman was dragged kicking and screaming into the light . . . and she vanished.

"Don't worry about her," Kaga reassured the audience, "because if Aeon Magician Girl is banished or destroyed, and Aeon Magician is in the same place . . ." He snapped his fingers as a blue vortex appeared in the ground, "they return together!"

[Aeon Magician

DARK - Level 6 - Spellcaster/Effect - 2200/1800]

Not only did the lovely Magician Girl return, but she was accompanied by a new face- a severe-looking man with long green hair and blue-and-silver robes, carrying a silver spear with a glowing green stone mounted just beneath its head.

Yuuichi, Tanya, and Jun all high-fived one another- all three of his most famous monsters coming out in the same turn was a rare sight. "But wait, when did Aeon Magician get banished?" Jun suddenly asked in confusion.

"It was probably banished off the top of his Deck when he activated the Temple," Tanya commented, shrugging.

"That sounds about right," Yuuichi nodded. "To think he was prepared for that exact scenario . . ."

"That, plus 2 Set cards, ends my turn," Kaga finished, bowing for the crowds.

Oda simply laughed softly. "Is that all? Quite a pathetic field, I must say," he smirked. "I draw . . . and Summon Vigilizard Blade Captain from my hand!"

[Vigilizard Blade Captain

EARTH - Level 4 - Reptile/Effect - 1700/1500]

A second lizard-man dressed in futuristic garb appeared, minus the jetpack and carrying two mean-looking swords instead of the knife. Suddenly, Infinite-Eyes folded its wings and knelt.

"If a Vigilizard is Summoned, Blade Captain's effect changes a random Attack Position monster on your field to Defense Position," Oda explained for the audience. "Next, by switching the strongest Attack Position monster you control to Defense Position, I can Special Summon Vigilizard Corporal - Slasher from my hand, which, of course, makes Blade Captain force your other monster on the defensive as well."

[Vigilizard Corporal - Slasher

EARTH - Level 4 - Reptile/Effect - 1600/1800]

A third futuristically-dressed reptilian being appeared, this one female and carrying a light-whip, as the two Magicians knelt and held their tools before them as if to block with them.

"Oh crap," Jun blanched- they'd all seen Vigilizards' gimmick. Piercing damage and powerful stun effects that only worked if the opponent's monsters were in Defense Position . . . just like they were right now. All three friends leaned closer to the TV, praying that Kaga had an out.

"And now, I activate the Continuous card known as Vigilizard Justice," Oda smirked arrogantly. "Once per turn, during either player's turn, if you would have the audacity to try to Summon something, I can switch whatever you Summon to Defense Position before it's Summoned and increase the Attack Points of all my friends by 300."

"Why that one?" Yuuichi murmured to himself quietly. "He might be able to defeat both Aeon Magician and Aeon Magician Girl . . . but, he's not actually stopping them from coming back."

Kaga's wild grin seemed to convey that he had the exact same line of thought. "You'll destroy my Magicians, they'll both return in Defense Position, and I'll have all I need to beat you next turn."

"That is where you are wrong," Oda said softly. "You will not get to do much of anything next turn. I attack your Aeon Magician Girl with Slasher, which activates her effect: If she battles a Defense Position monster, all my Vigilizards gain 300 Attack Points . . . and then she inflicts piercing Battle Damage."

The reptilian monster leaped forward, her glowing whip of energy slicing Aeon Magician Girl in two.

[Vigilizard Privateer: 1900 ATK

Vigilizard Blade Captain: 2000 ATK

Vigilizard Corporal - Slasher: 1900 ATK

Kaga: 7300 LP]

"And, when Slasher inflicts damage to my opponent," Oda commented, grinning wryly, "I get to activate one of two effects . . . and I choose to Special Summon a Vigilizard from my hand. Come, Vigilizard Specialist - Crusher!"

[Vigilizard Specialist - Crusher

EARTH - Level 6 - Reptile/Effect - 2400/1500]

This new future lizard was huge, carrying a massive metallic mace made of what seemed to be a steel-coated elephant skull.

"When Crusher is Summoned, all monsters you control lose 800 Defense Points!" Oda cried, getting into the flow of the moment.

[infinite-Eyes Aeon Dragon: 1200 DEF

Aeon Magician: 1000 DEF]

"And now the fun begins," Oda chuckled, "because Blade Captain can keep attacking as long as you control Defense Position monsters! Destroy Aeon Magician, Captain!"

The twin-sword-wielding monster swung forward and cut Aeon Magician to ribbons with a single sword strike.

[Kaga: 6400 LP]

"When my Captain inflicts damage, I get to choose between one of two effects . . . and I choose making you banish the top 2 cards of your Deck!" Oda smirked. "Oh, and Aeon Magician Girl's effect isn't optional. You have to bring your Magicians back, despite the danger . . . and they'll come back on the defensive, making my Vigilizards gain attacking power!

The Magicians indeed returned, kneeling and practically cowering in fear as the reptilian menaces grew more powerful . . .

[Vigilizard Blade Captain: 2300 ATK

Vigilizard Privateer: 2200 ATK

Vigilizard Corporal - Slasher: 2200 ATK

Vigilizard Specialist - Crusher: 2700 ATK]

"And another attack! Oh Captain my captain, cut his dragon apart!" Oda seemed to be reveling in the power he wielded.

[Kaga: 5300 LP] Two more cards banished from his Deck.

"Again, the girl!"

[Kaga: 4200 LP] Two more.

"ONE LAST TIME, SLICE THAT MAGICIAN!"

[Kaga: 3700 LP]

Oda had managed to banish 8 cards from the top of Kaga's Deck in a single turn. Even as the Magicians returned, happily in Attack Position, it was definite that things weren't going Kaga's way.

"Your poor monsters have no choice but to keep returning . . . too bad, because my monsters don't quit," Oda taunted. "Crusher attacks your Magician."

That huge mace in the big lizard's claws swung up and crushed the sorcerer, defeating him once again in a show of sparkles.

[Kaga: 3200 LP]

"Of the two effects that can trigger when Crusher destroys a monster is that I can do exactly what happens when I Summon him . . . that is, switch a monster on your field to Defense Position and rob it of 800 Defense Points," Oda explained, his sadistic grin absolutely immense.

[Aeon Magician Girl: 400 DEF]

"Oh, and by the way . . . a monster that Privateer slays can't activate its effects in the Graveyard, so your Magicians won't be coming back a fourth time," Oda said conversationally. "Attack."

The trio of friends were utterly silent as that lizard Oda Summoned on the first turn brandished its sickeningly curved knife, and jumped past Aeon Magician Girl to impale her through the back . . . before she, too, vanished into nothingness.

[Kaga: 1400 LP]

The normally cheerful Duelist had a somber, subdued expression as Oda explained the effect of Vigilizard Privateer: "The funny thing is, when Privateer inflicts damage, I get to banish two of your Spell or Trap Cards, and you can't activate them in response . . ."

Yuuichi's eyes widened in shock. "Oda's going to . . ."

"I end my turn," Oda smirked, holding out his hand in a thumbs-down position.

Kaga was dumbfounded for a moment, before immediately regaining his joy for a brief moment. "I draw. Now, during my Standby Phase, since neither of us control a face-up Aeon monster, we both take 100 damage for each banished card . . ." As he explained, the light of hope left his eyes.

"Of which there are exactly 15," Oda finished.

Tanya tried to switch off the TV, but only succeeded in changing the channel. She couldn't bear to watch the result be called, and her pure depressed lethargy prevented her from doing more. "That . . . that was . . ."

"Horrible," Jun finished for her. "Just brutal attack, attack, attack . . . it was savage."

Yuuichi shook his head softly. "It was a legitimate strategy, if a little underhanded. We all use monsters that attack multiple times in our own Decks . . . Tanya, it's a big part of how your Deck functions to begin with."

As they sat quietly, the news report chimed in: "And in other news today, no word yet from either Grand Tournament Champion Soraino Oda, or second-place finisher Yakukishi Kaga, since the finale of the tournament finals three days ago. As such, Mr. Soraino's last opponent and official third-place winner, Wallace Decamp, will be receiving the official prize of a celebratory parade in his honor. These are the third and fourth such unexplained disappearances in the last week, all Duelists whose Duel Disks have since been recovered, with a last recorded Life Point total below negative 8000 . . ."

The television droned on, but the three friends were already sprinting out the door. Their idol was missing, and they would participate in the search as best they could.

Episode 2 - Suspicion

Three friends dashing down the road as one was always unusual, as most people generally didn't run places . . . but that was exactly the case as Jun, Tanya, and Yuuichi sprinted down the side of the road to the police station to volunteer to help . . .

Only to find Wallace Decamp, third-place finisher and "official" champion of the national Dueling Grand Championship with both Oda and Kaga having gone missing, standing in front of the building.

The young man was still considerably older than the trio of friends, somewhere in his early 20s as opposed to the three seventeen year olds standing before him. He was garbled in a simple long black jacket and drab olive pants, and they knew from his appearance on TV that this jacket was custom-made with a picture of a coiled cobra on the back. He looked through his sunglasses with apparent disdain, asking, "What in hell are you doing here?"

"We're here to help the police find Yakukishi Kaga!" Jun yelled at the top of his lungs, earning a look from his friend and sister as he stepped forward in pride.

"Kids should leave police matters to the police," Wallace sighed softly, his voice quiet yet disapproving. "That is, after all, their job."

"We can't just stand aside and do nothing!" Tanya protested, her emerald hair bouncing with her as she stepped forward.

"That's exactly what I expect you to do," Wallace said, still not raising his voice a decibel. "I suggest you head home, or wherever in Hell you three should be right now, instead of worrying about Mr. Yakukishi's current location. I am sure that the police are doing everything they can."

"Well, we're not backing down!" Jun bellowed, activating his Duel Disk and getting into a ready stance, his forest-green spikes standing on end.

"If a Duel is what you want, I'll give it to you," Wallace shrugged, activating his own Duel Disk in response, "but you should really just head home afterwards. I may not be particularly busy, but the police surely are."

"DUEL!"

Little did either notice that Yuuichi and Tanya had slipped away into the police station while they were talking.

OP

"Take the first turn," Jun smirked, ready for whatever his opponent would throw at him.

"If you insist," Wallace shrugged. "I'll start with the Continuous Spell, Fungal Serpents' Hunting Grounds. While I control this card, I draw a card the first time a Fungal Serpent is Summoned to my side of the field in a turn."

Suddenly, a carpet of thick, dew-covered grasses appeared at the two Duelists' feet.

"And now," Wallace continued, not raising his voice in the slightest, "I'll Summon Garter of the Fungal Serpents from my hand, and draw a card thanks to my Hunting Grounds."

A garter snake slithered out of the grasses, its scales darkened with rot as several fungi sprouted through its skin. It hissed, but the sound was echoed and distorted as if the snake was underwater.

[Garter of the Fungal Serpents

EARTH - Level 4 - Reptile/Effect - 1200/1700]

"During the turn I Summon my garter snake," Wallace continued without missing a beat, "I get to pull out another of my snakes from my hand. So, without further ado, here is my Viper!"

A second snake, this one an uncomfortably large pit viper with mold sprouting through its skull, slithered up from the grass to hiss menacingly at Jun, staring with sightless white eyes at the young man.

[Viper of the Fungal Serpents

EARTH - Level 4 - Reptile/Effect - 1700/1200]

"Why is it snakes," Jun groaned, "I really hate snakes . . ."

"Well then, you're going to abhor my next move," Wallace continued, "because I just can't continue without my Mamba," he stated as he dropped yet another monster. "So, honestly, it's a good thing I have two Fungal Serpents on my field, because that is the condition to Summon it."

A third snake, hissing its drowned hiss, slithered out of the thick grasses- a huge, horrifying rendition of a black mamba, thin mushrooms along its back giving it almost a ridge of spines. As it opened its maw, rot could be seen in its mouth, a horrifying and disgusting sight.

[Mamba of the Fungal Serpents

EARTH - Level 5 - Reptile/Effect - 2100/800]

[Mamba of the Fungal Serpents

LEVEL 4 ]

"If my Mamba is Summoned by its own effect, it becomes Level 4 on the field, but . . . I'll end my turn with this Set card," Wallace said softly.

"Good thing I can't smell them," Jun quipped nervously.

* * * * * * * * *

Meanwhile, Yuuichi and Tanya were inside the police station . . . but it seemed no one else was. "Hello?" Tanya asked empty air, unnerved by the quiet.

Yuuichi immediately got to looking around, checking carefully around the unoccupied desks and examining the phones. "Lines have been cut," he stated simply, holding up a severed telephone cord. "And it looks like there's a police Duel Disk here . . ." He picked up the piece of machinery to show Tanya.

"No Deck in it," Tanya commented, "but the Disk is here? Aren't police disks always loaded?"

"And stacked, if you believe the rumors," Yuuichi replied, only half joking. "Check the last Duel data."

Tanya began fiddling with the piece of machinery to pull up its records, a concerned frown on her face. As she worked, she raised a question: "You think it's just coincidence that he was out there the exact moment the entire police force went missing?" She jerked her head in the direction of the door, indicating Wallace.

"I'm not sure what he'd stand to gain," Yuuichi murmured, "but it's definitely a possibility."

* * * * * * * * *

"My turn, then," Jun said as he drew a card and examined it. "I'll start by activating Invocation of Privilege! Any time a Spellbound or Mellaxis card is sent from my hand or Deck to the Graveyard, I get to draw a card!"

Wallace silently watched, and one could practically see the gears in his head turning.

"Next, I Summon my Studious Sorcerer Mellaxis from NY hand!" Jun bellowed, going all-in on calling attention to himself.

A young boy in mage's robes and glasses appeared on Jun's field, twirling a peculiar, crooked wooden staff.

[studious Sorcerer Mellaxis

DARK - Level 3 - Spellcaster/Effect - 700/600]

"And that's when Mamba's effect activates. When you Summon a monster or monsters, it places two Spore Counters on those monsters," Wallace interrupted as his snake spat two disgusting green spores onto Mellaxis, forcing the boy to his knees, looking like he was violently ill due to the effects of the spores.

[studious Sorcerer Mellaxis

0 ATK/0 DEF]

"Each of my Serpents makes monsters lose Attack and Defense Points for every Spore Counter on them," Wallace continued. "In this case, thanks to the combined effects of my Mamba, Garter, and Viper, each Spore Counter on your monsters takes away 600 of their Attack and Defense Points."

"However, Mellaxis retains his effect," Jun growled, "so by discarding two cards, I can Special Summon two Spellbound monsters from my hand or Graveyard . . . and I choose Spellbound Swordswoman and Spellbound Magic Student!"

Mellaxis raised his staff, and suddenly he was joined by two others- the first was a tall, severe-looking black-haired woman, clad in armor and carrying a massive single-edged sword over one shoulder; the other was a messy-haired young man in a scholarly robe with glasses, his face buried in a book of spells as he sat cross-legged on the ground.

[spellbound Swordswoman

LIGHT - Level 4 - Warrior/Effect - 1700/1500

Spellbound Magic Student

LIGHT - Level 3 - Spellcaster/Effect - 100/2100]

"Once they are Summoned, it's two Spore Counters for each of them!" Wallace interrupted once more as his Mamba spat up more spores, making both the proud Swordswoman and the geeky Magic Student fall weaker.

[spellbound Swordswoman

500 ATK/300 DEF

Spellbound Magic Student

0 ATK/900 DEF]

"That is such epic crap," Jun groaned, before loudly continuing, "Now I activate my Magic Student's effect! If he's in face-up Defense Position during my Main Phase, I can add any Level 4 or lower Spellcaster-Type monster from my Deck to my hand . . . and the monster I choose is Impetuous Magician Mellaxis!"

"So, you have two cards in hand . . ." Wallace smirked, "So I suppose you have a way to make your Sorcerer leave the field and come back so you can activate its effect again and bring back the two monsters you discarded."

"Correct," Jun smiled, "but not both. Just one . . . because Mellaxis is a master of Contact Fusion! So, by sending him and my Swordswoman to the Graveyard, I can Fusion Summon without a Fusion Spell!"

Embracing the moment, he clasped his hands- "Brilliant sorcerer, embrace the power of the light and accept your new destiny! Fusion Summon, Level 6! Shining Sorcerer Mellaxis!"

Both the boy mage and the sword-wielding woman vanished into a vortex, replaced by what looked like an older version of the same sorcerer, clad now in white-and-gold armor over his robes.

[shining Sorcerer Mellaxis

LIGHT - Level 6 - Spellcaster/Fusion/Effect - 2100/1800]

'I can't believe I have to keep reminding you, but Mamba's effect places two Spore Counters on anything you Summon." The process repeated, dragging down the Shining Sorcerer with illness.

[shining Sorcerer Mellaxis

"Whatever," Jun spat back, getting annoyed, "I can still use my Studious Sorcerer's effect to revive him because I control a face-up Spellbound monster."

The boy reappeared, his staff in hand as he leapt free of the Graveyard and got his dose of Spore Counters.

"Now," Jun said, "by discarding a card I can bring any Spellbound out of the Graveyard, so rise for me Spellbound Yuki Onna!"

And with that, a blue-haired young woman wrapped in a pure white kimono appeared on Jun's field, ready and willing to fight, before getting splattered with Spore Counters.

[spellbound Yuki Onna

"And, because I discarded a Spellbound monster, I draw again," Jun continued. "Now with that out of the way . . . I'll attack your Mamba!"

The gleaming Sorcerer charged forward, staff in hand . . .

* * * * * * * * *

"Just pulled up the Duel logs," Tanya muttered, "and it's the same as what happened to everyone else- lost, with an absurd negative in Life Points."

"Hm," Yuuichi murmured in thought. "So, whoever is doing this has gotten all the cops . . . makes sense, considering their actions. If there's no police, there's no one who can stop them from kidnapping everyone. But, if they're taking the people, why take the Decks?"

"I honestly don't know," Tanya shrugged, "but we should probably get going while the going is good. Who knows how long Jun will be able to hold off someone who got to third place in the Grand Tournament . . . ?"

They sprinted out, taking one of the police Duel Disks to examine in greater detail as they left through the back.

* * * * * * * * *

"And, as I attack, I discard Impetuous Magician Mellaxis from my hand!" Jun bellowed, "who increases the Attack Points of a battling Spellbound or Mellaxis monster by 2000!"

[shining Sorcerer Mellaxis

900 -> 2900 ATK]

"Then I activate my Trap Card!" Wallace interrupted, only to be interrupted himself by Jun.

"If a Spellbound monster is used as Fusion Material for Shining Sorcerer Mellaxis's Fusion Summon, he copies that monster's effect, meaning that you can't negate the attacks or effects of my Spellbound and Mellaxis monsters!" Jun smirked, finally glad to have one-upped the "Champion".

"But that's just the thing," Wallace laughed, finally expressing real emotion, "I wasn’t negating anything! I activate Rising Humidity, a Trap Card that increases the Attack Points of all Fungal Serpents monsters I control by 100 for every Spore Counter on the field until my next turn ends!"

[Mamba of the Fungal Serpents

Jun screamed as Shining Sorcerer Mellaxis crashed headlong into the massive Mamba, which bit into him and tossed the armored mage across the ground like a rag doll.

[Jun: 7900 LP]

"Shining Sorcerer Mellaxis doesn't get destroyed, thanks to Magic Student's effect . . . the first time I would lose each of my Spellbound or Mellaxis monsters in a turn, he defends them," Jun explained. "By sending the top card of my Deck to the Graveyard, I can return my Impetuous Magician from my Graveyard to my hand . . . and end my turn with three cards in hand," he said sadly.

"Aw, that's too bad," Wallace smirked, "but it's my turn now. So, I'll Summon my Copperhead of the Fungal Serpents and draw a card."

Once again, a sickly, fungus-coated snake, this one a Copperhead, slithered from the grass and hissed its watery, distorted hiss.

[Copperhead of the Fungal Serpents

"Next, I think I have just the card to finish you off . . . Unstoppable Infestation. This card destroys every single monster you control with no Attack Points and at least one Spore Counter on it . . . and as a Continuous Spell, your Magic Student's effect just won't help in the slightest."

Jun's jaw dropped as every single one of his monsters exploded into dust, and Unstoppable Infestation itself was destroyed.

"Of course, once there are no Spore Counters on the field, I lose the card. Oh well. Attack, my serpents," Wallace continued nonchalantly as his snakes attacked.

Jun was battered into a wall by the four attacks, struggling to stand . . . and was helped up by the returned Yuuichi and Tanya.

"We got what we came for," Yuuichi murmured as he hefted his friend on his shoulder, "let's just get going before Mr. Champion figures it out."

"But I lost . . ." Jun complained softly.

"Don't worry about it. He reached third in the tournament, he would have been a challenge for Mr. Yakukishi!" Tanya comforted him as they walked away. "Don't bear yourself up for being beaten by a pro."

"He wasn't even trying, though . . . he didn't Xyz Summon," Jun groaned as he was lead away.

Behind them, Wallace walked into the police station without another word.
