Card advantage isn't everything.

In terms of pure numbers, Fusion etc. summoning is a big minus (this is why Polymerization was so horrible for so many years, and Fusion was the laughing stock)

The key is to make sure that when you do put in cards, you get something worth what you put in (or more). Shooting Quasar Dragon takes 3 monsters which each take at least 2 monsters to summon, but the investment wins the game.

Card advantage isn't everything, but Pot of Greed gives you something for nothing and that is why it is too powerful.

If you go first and you start with Pot of Greed, you now start with 6 cards instead of 5. That single card was so fearsome the rules were changed.

This game is already so fast that games can end on turn 3 easily. Adding Pot of Greed only increases the chance of you starting with an unbreakable board or an OTK.
