Must be Special Summoned with "The Claw of Hermos", using a Dragon monster. If this card is Special Summoned: Target 1 other face-up monster on the field; equip this card to it. The equipped Monster is unaffected by your opponents card effects. If the equipped Monster is attacked by a Monster with higher ATK than this card while in Attack Position, switch this card to Defence Position and it cannot be destroyed as a result of battle this turn. If the equipped Monster is also equipped with "Red-Eyes Black Dragon Sword" it gains the following effect.

* If this card attacks a Defence Position Monster, inflict piercing battle damage.

So Red-Eyes Black Dragon Shield acts to protect your equipped Monster from card effects where if its also equipped with Sword it also gives that equipped Monster a massive power boost.

 

In Dragon focused Decks using the Claw of Hermos and Link Monsters this can be set up as a defensive play to protect your Monster where if you manage to get sword equipped to shield will grant your monster the ability to grant piercing damage.
