A Dragon of Another Color; "SpectR" Archetype

Before getting into the archetype itself I'll have to explain their main gimmick, this archetype revolves around my "Phantom" monster ED type, it's not particularly balanced one way or the other and is essentially contact fusion but it's the first custom card type I made so I'm a little attached to it.

Properties of Phantom Monsters;

  • Phantom Monsters use a pale green template and like most monsters have ATK, DEF, Level, and Attribute
  • Phantom Monsters are Phantom Summoned from the ED by banishing Phantom Materials from your hand or field, the number of required materials can vary wildly from one specific monster to nearly any number of monsters with a certain characteristic such as level, type, or attribute.
  • Now for the interesting bit, as hinted at by their names Phantom Monsters aren't as real as they seem, any time a Phantom Monster would be targeted for an attack or card effect or would be destroyed instead they return to the ED and the banished materials are summoned back to the field, this is referred to with he keyword "Vanish/Vanished" it doesn't make them invincible though, non-destruction-non-targeting removal still hits (I'll admit that's not the most common thing though) and if their effects are negated, they're listed materials aren't in your banish zone, or you don't have enough available zones to summon all the materials they can't vanish at all.

now let's talk about the archetype itself, the main deck monsters are dragons based on the light spectrum of color with their levels ascending as the wave length increases (lvl 1 for red, lvl 7 for violet) and their effect primarily exists to help set up or support their Phantom boss monsters via triggers on banishing monsters, banish recovery, and slight GY shenanigan, notably some of the boss monsters aren't actual members of the archetype and therefore wouldn't benefit from any support that may be made in the future. As a side note the three higher level monsters can SS themselves by discarding the number of monsters needed to NS, there was a reason for this but I don't remember what it was

"Once per turn you can discard one LIGHT or DARK monster; Special Summon one EARTH, FIRE, WIND, or WATER "SpectR" monster from your Deck or GY."

"This card is always treated as every Attribute. When this card is banished, except as material for a Phantom Summon, you can Special Summon one "SpectR" monster from your hand or GY except "SpectRal Tail Dragon". When you Phantom Summon a "SpectR" monster you can treat this card as one of the listed Phantom Material Monsters but all other Materials must be correct."

Phantom

now's a great time to talk more about the "Vanish" mechanic, in the case of monsters with variable materials players must track how many Phantom Materials were used for the summon and, when that monster attempts to Vanish, you must have the same number of correct Phantom Materials/zones to summon them to.

"1 "SpectR" monster + 1 or more LIGHT monsters
This card gains 100 ATK for each Phantom Material used to summon it. Once per turn you can target a banished "SpectR" monster; destroy one monster your opponent controls with the same Attribute.
"

"1 "SpectR" monster + 1 or more DARK monsters
This card gains 100 ATK for each Phantom Material used to summon it. Once per turn you can banish a "SpectR" monster you control until the Endphase; Special Summon a "SpectR" Phantom Monster from your Extra Deck, it's effects are negated and return it to the Extra Deck during the Endphase.
"

image.png.f18977a946c878e5c947fd4f136ec5d7.png

""SpectRed" + 1 "SpectR" or LIGHT monster
When this card declares an attack you can send one of your removed from play "SpectR" monster to your GY; your opponent cannot activate cards and effects until the end of the Damage Step.
"

image.png.b02dd6e49a571aaae04c8162b564ee45.png

""SpectRiolet" + 1 "SpectR" or LIGHT monster
Once per turn (quick effect) you can banish one monster from your GY; target one monster your opponent controls, that monsters effects are negated and cannot be activated until the Endphase.
"

(for context on these next two cards, this one, "SpectRal Tail Phantom Dragon, was the first one designed and was originally for an RP/fanfiction concept around dimension dragons for other monster types, the archetype was built around it and it's effect, materials, and name were modified to match, the "SpectR" archetype was designed to feel very anime with the various ED monsters as semi-direct upgrades to the characters deck and being gained by the user at dramatically relevant moments.)

image.png.21f7db8a8df52f5753215c4e88ab713c.png

"2 monsters including a "SpectR" or Phantom Monster
When this card Vanishes you can, immediately after this effect resolves, Special Summon one Phantom Monster from your Extra Deck except "SpectRal Tail Phantom Dragon" by banishing monsters you control or from your Deck or GY (this is treated as a Phantom Summon).
"

another fun Phantom Fact! only Phantom Summoned monsters can Vanish, so if you were to use this monster's effect to summon your banished "SpectRal Tail Phantom Dragon" that summoned monster would be unable to vanish regardless of meeting the requirements.

image.png.6b54b39f6922794a212a5a520d32dad4.png

""SpectRal Tail Phantom Dragon" + 1 LIGHT monster
Once per turn you can Special Summon a removed from play Dragon Monster, that monster cannot be destroyed while you control this face-up card, when this card leaves the field destroy all monsters summoned by this effect.
"

the boss monster for the archetype (that totally isn't a rainbow dragon knockoff) can't ever vanish due to requiring too many materials but makes up for that with powerful non OPT protection and a 4000 body. not 100% sure about the name, alternative is "Resplendent Dragon"

image.png.8311633a1fb2a7b0f65074956cd4eed6.png

"7 "SpectR" monsters with different names
If this card would be removed from the field by your opponents card effect you can send a banished "SpectR" monster to the GY; negate that effect and destroy that card.
"

Spell/Trap

"Banish one Phantom Monster from your Extra Deck or GY; Special Summon up to two banished "SpectR" monsters that could be used as Phantom Materials for the banished monster."
