The Dark Doorway (Chapter III posted)

Just like the first volume, TDD will focus less on the card games and more on the plot. So, if you're looking for a fanfic packed with duels, go read Hidden Legacy. Card games are strange things to focus a plot like this one around, really. In fact, my goal here is to stop using card games at all. If a matter needs to be settled, there are much cooler ways to settle matters than with card games. Take a look at Horakhtum or Death's Door, and see for yourselves. I couldn't have had a duel there, could I? It just wouldn't fit.

And also, during the writing of the first volume, I learned that some people found it difficult to tell who was saying what. Therefore, I have tried to fix that. I won't use script format, Mod no. Instead, I'll go with the “said” style. People might dislike it, but I'll be sure to make it as good as possible.

[spoiler=Prologue: Another story to be told]

April, Tuesday 19th, 2011

Three years have passed since the death of Eric Morae and the Wicked Gods. The Wickspire is still in ruins, but the place has been crowded for long. Ever since the happening, outlaws and criminals from countless worlds have fled to the ruins of the old tower. There seems to some sort of leader, as the outlaws are still alive rather than having killed each other by now.

Back on earth, Jonah Morae has lived in the old house, even though his mother died at the terrifying event. Susannah and Isaac moved back to Redemption City, where they found their parents safe and sound trying to rebuild the city. The town was rebuilt and renamed into Cinderwood, to mourn those that had died in the fires. Today, there are still no official explanation to what happened, and everyone has their own theories.

Abigail and Richard, however, were not as lucky. When they came back, they were told by a communal worker that their parents had been found dead in the ruins of the old hospital. Richard has fled town and now lives as a hermit outside the city, while Abigail, to everyone's surprise, moved down to Red Sky City. After a few months, she moved in with Jonah. Together, they have endured ever since, both having lost a parent in the events three years ago.

Flora, from living in a quiet town on the east coast, traveled to Redemption City and helped them to rebuild the town. Once the town was rebuilt, she moved in to a house not far from Susannah's. They still meet every other day, if only to let Nephtys and Isadora talk to each other.

After Eric's death, Jonah resigned from the Tormentor's Throne, with Flora as his successor. Flora, filled with the power that had once turned Eric into what had killed him, quickly made Earth the new seat of the Tormentor's kingdom. With her mind's strength, she did what Eric would never have done: She recreated the palace, but kept it with her in a pocket universe created with her power alone. Ever since, she has trying to rebuild the Tormentor's former empire, but with barely any success so far.

And on the other side of the world, in Australia, the twins Elvira and Karen Johnson still think of the mysterious dream from three years ago. What was it that happened? And, as Elvira alone wonders, what was that mysterious beast?

[spoiler=Chapter I]

Evil exists within all of us. It might slumber, rest, wait for another day. But sometimes, it awakens. And only then, can a man truly be judged. Only when he has shown his true personality, anything can be proved. And then, it might be too late. Just look at Eric's case. Only when he revealed the evil within him, we knew that he wanted power. And that led to the death of many innocent people. People that could have done much good for the world. But once again, the process of good was halted by the process of evil.

Chapter I: Reflection

Shellville, Australia

Karen yawned, and rose slowly from her bed, her long, black hair flowed like running water through the air. The bed was the only thing she had bought so far for the new apartment; the desk and shelves in her office she had brought with her from her parents' home. She looked to her side, where Lucas was still asleep. She smiled. She had met Lucas, her boyfriend for the last two years, in school of all places. It had been the first day of the new year, and for some reason, Lucas was there. Karen had learned later on that Lucas was an old friend to one of the teachers, Mrs Tonoma, the biology teacher. Apparently, Mrs Tonoma's daughter had gone missing for several years; Lucas had found her. Ever since, they had kept in touch. However, as Lucas assured Karen, there was nothing between them. They were just friends. Karen slipped out of the bed, and out into the kitchen. Still wearing her pajamas, she made some coffee. She rarely had the time for breakfast anymore. Just coffee. That was enough for a few hours, especially if she had time to make a big lunch. She poured some of the coffee into a mug she hadn't dished since yesterday; she had forgot to put it in the dishwasher, and now it was too late. The mug wasn't that dirty. The coffee just had a brief taste of old to it. Karen frowned, then went back into the bedroom and pulled the curtains apart. A brilliant sunlight filled the room, and Lucas moaned in his sleep, then turned over. Karen frowned again, and walked over to him. She stroke him gently along the arm.

- Wake up, sleepyhead, she said with a smile. It's eight AM and you have to work in an hour.

Lucas suddenly flung his eyes open, and looked at the time. He sighed, then climbed out of bed and stumbled towards the closet on the left wall. Karen smiled at him as he pulled out a pair of jeans and a gray shirt. Lucas saw her gaze, and looked at her. As always, her deep, black eyes seemed to dig into his mind.

- What's so funny? he grunted at her.

- Your hair is a mess, Luke, she said with her most motherly voice while she placed her coffee mug on the table next to the bed. And besides, it's Saturday.

Lucas stared blankly at her for a few seconds, and a smile spread across his face.

- Oh, Karen, I love you!

He almost tackled her as they jumped into the bed, where they kissed for a long time.

Shigumane, Japan

April, Saturday 23rd

09:31 AM

Takake leaned back in his office chair, and looked out the window. He saw nothing but a grand, blue ocean, and the waves crashing into the shores far below. He smiled. He had moved to Shigumane last fall, when he had grew tired of the stress in Tokyo. He needed some place he could relax, and had taken a month's vacation from his job, and bought the house for practically nothing; the previous owner was desperate to sell it. He told Takake, after he had bought the house, that it was haunted. First, Takake hesitated, then he realized that even if it happened to be some sort of ghost in the house, he had probably seen worse. Takake shivered. He hadn't thought of Nathaniel for months, but now the memories crashed into him. After Nathaniel had came to him, he had lay passed out on the desk for weeks, his mind still flowing wildly. When he finally woke up, his body was drained. He had stumbled to the phone, and called 911. About half an hour later, they had came and took him to a hospital in New York. He was told it was a miracle he was still alive, but Takake didn't care much for miracles. He had seen a man radiate more light than a star. He himself could carry his voice to anywhere he wanted. Anyway, after about six months he had got out of the hospital and took the first flight to Tokyo. And now, he was here. Finally the calm life he deserved. Suddenly, there were knocks on the door. Takake frowned; he hadn't told anyone he had bought the house. He shrugged.

- Come in, he shouted, the door's open!

He heard the door open and close, and walked out of the office. He walked down the stairs, and heard someone whisper. As he turned to look to the hallway, only a single person stood there; a girl, perhaps around twenty years old, possibly younger, with stunning long black hair and dark eyes. She was wearing a long, blue dress and slippers. She looked at Takake, then frowned.

- You're not a friend of Jacob, are you? the girl said in fluent Japanese, although she looked more like an American or Australian. She gave Takake a troubled look. Takake shook his head.

- If you're talking about Mr Henderson, Takake said quietly without using his power, then no. I only met him briefly when I bought the house.

Takake heard the girl gasp. Apparently, she didn't know. The girl blushed.

- Then, I'm sorry for interrupting you, Mr... The girl looked at Takake, and her deep eyes seemed to penetrate his mind.

- Oh, sorry, Takake said. The name's Hironima. Takake Hironima.

The girl nodded.

- I'm Elvira Johnson, she said. I live just around the block.

Takake nodded, and the girl stepped out through the open door. Takake looked after her, and a shiver went down his spine. There was something about that girl that reminded him of his old wife, Aiku. Maybe it was the cold in her voice, maybe it was her friendly-but-not-too-much attitude towards him. He sighed, and sat down on a chair in the kitchen. He needed to rest for a while, and he surely couldn't have young girls running around the house.

Red Sky City, America

April, Friday 22nd

Jonah walked alone on the sidewalk. Abbi would be worried sick about him back home, he knew it, but he needed these walks to clear his mind. Besides, he was eighteen now, and he couldn't let some sixteen year old - not even his girlfriend - keep him in the house. It's not like he was seeing someone, whatever Abbi thought. He looked around. Red Sky was as beautiful as ever, the lower houses making quite a difference towards the occasional skyscraper. There were four skyscrapers in total; Jonah had never needed a reason to visit either of them. He shivered. The air was growing cold around him, and he walked faster. He needed to get home before Abbi became too worried.

- Jonah? asked a voice behind him. Jonah turned around, and saw a woman, around thirty years old. She looked familiar somehow, with her long, fiery red hair and pale skin. Jonah nodded at her.

- Thought I'd recognize you, she said, even if it's been three years since last.

Suddenly, Jonah got a flashback, and knew who the woman was. It was Lucy. Eric's old fiancée.

Chapter II: Message

This can't be it, not after all that just happened.

The young man looked around, his dreaming gaze eying the world closest to him. As far as he could see, he stood in a small room, possibly eight feet across, and it was covered in darkness. The young man could barely see his nose, and clearly not his own hand. He had walked across the room for many times, and had estimated it's length. The room clearly didn't have any furniture; he would have collided with it by now. The only thing he could find was two concave cuts into one of the walls, possibly three feet away from each other. At first, the young man thought them to be windows, since they seemed slightly brighter than the rest of the room, but now he had lost faith in them. He sat down on the floor, and cried a single tear which landed on his arm. It only stayed there for a split second, until it fell through his skin and flesh and landed on the floor beneath him.

Abbi had already gone to sleep when Jonah and Lucy came back to the house. On their way back, they had talked about what had happened since they last had met. Lucy had been living in Chicago for a while, and eventually got a new boyfriend. However, she could somehow never stop thinking about Eric, even at night. And about a month after her and Eric's break-up, she had learned that he was declared missing and hadn't been found ever since. What was worse, Jonah had declared about a week later that his and Eric's mother was dead as well, and Jonah was surprised how hard Lucy took it. Of course, he had taken it a lot worse, but Lucy and his mother didn't meet that much. Not as he could remember. As soon as they had arrived at the doorstep, Lucy nodded at Jonah.

- There's something I need to tell you, Jonah, she said. Last night... I had a dream.

Jonah nodded silently, but in his mind he suddenly remembered how Susannah had said the exact same thing about three years ago, when she first revealed her contact with the Tormentor.

- The dream started with nothing but darkness, Lucy continued. I couldn't see anything. And then... suddenly I was falling through a long tunnel of some sort. My body felt like it would explode any second; when I looked down, I saw that my skin was all bright and burning. I screamed of pain, and tried to shake it off me, tried to get rid of it. And suddenly, there was a surge of pain so immense that it still feel it. Then, it was gone. Everything was gone. And just before I woke up, I noticed that I was just inches above a pool of water, which reflected my face. But it wasn't my face, Jonah. It was Eric's face.

Jonah had listened to her speech with a sense of recognition building up inside him, and now he knew that it was all too true. Lucy had relived Eric's last moments of life, seen through his eyes. He nodded at her.

- I see what you mean Lucy, Jonah said, but why come here? I understand that you might be worried...

- No, it's not that, Lucy interrupted. It's something far worse. When I woke up, I found this lying on my bed.

She picked up a small notebook from the pocket of her coat, and handed it to Jonah.

- A notebook? Jonah frowned. Then, he saw what was printed on the front. Two simple words that sent shivers down his spine. He handed it back to Lucy.

- I can't even dare to open that, Jonah said. That thing is far too dangerous, Lucy. It should be kept away.

Lucy frowned briefly.

- I've read it, Lucy said. From start to finish. It all makes sense now. Why Eric was so absent-minded those last weeks before I moved to Chicago, why he kept talking to himself. Why he never said anything about it to me, even when I asked. I almost know the truth now, Jonah. All I need is the last piece of the puzzle.

She almost jumped out of her chair, and looked up the stairs.

- I've already looked through the things I inherited from Eric once he went missing, she said, and they didn't tell me anything. I need to look through Eric's room, Jonah. I need the Key.

There was something about how she pronounced her last words that frightened Jonah, and she looked from Lucy to the notebook, and back. Then, he nodded.

- Fine, Jonah said with a stern look, but Abigail's sleeping upstairs. You'll have to come back tomorrow.

Lucy raised an eyebrow.

- Abigail?, she asked. Jonah cursed under his breath. With the information Lucy would have got from that notebook, telling her about Abigail being here might not have been that good. Just when Jonah was about to respond, Lucy interrupted him with a smile.

- Oh, I see. Seems like you got yourself a special friend when I lost mine.

She turned around and walked out the door. As she closed it slowly, Jonah heard that she was humming.

Lucas tried to get some rest. Karen had went off to hang out with some old friends that she hadn't seen in five years, or something. He had only half-listened, he was still tired from only six hours of sleep. Now, he half-sapped on a juice while laying still in bed. He thought of the last few hours, and smiled. Him and Karen had laid there, side by side, for almost an hour. He loved her so dearly he couldn't even think of what his life had been before he had met her. Not only by his love for her, but also because of the fact that he didn't remember much from the last few years. He only vaguely remembered that he had met a man which had changed his life somehow. The man had looked familiar somehow, even when Lucas had met him for the first time. He was wearing a long, black jacket, and a black shirt and trousers under that. He must have been around forty years old, but he still had a long cascade of black hair down his neck and back. There was something about his face that reminded Lucas of a gargoyle. The grim, sharp features and the retracted eyes had made him shiver back in the days. He clearly remembered the man's name, which had itched itself onto his brain and eyes. Rataval. He leaned back, and closed his eyes. Just before he drifted off into his dreams, another name flashed before him.Jonathan...

Cinderwood Town, America

April, Friday 22nd

10: 31 PM

Susannah laid in her bed, trying to fall asleep. It had been a long day at school; she had felt too tired to even walk the half a mile home and waited five minutes for a bus. Now, she couldn't fall asleep. There were too many thoughts in her head right now, and her room was warm. Her pajamas stuck to her skin from the sweat; it felt like she was inside a cocoon. She often thought about Abbi these days, since they couldn't meet as often as before. Almost four years ago now, Susannah had put Abbi in a coma for six months. Even though it was not really Susannah's fault - Abbi had been hit in the back of her head with a burning tree branch - Susannah held herself responsible. Then, she hadn't been able to talk to Abbi for six months. Now, they met about once a month, when Susannah took a trip down to Red Sky City for the weekend. Susannah sighed, and looked out the window. Abigail rarely came back here. Even though the town had been completely rebuilt now, she still said that the town reminded her of her parents and the burning. Susannah climbed out of bed and walked over to the window. Even though it was April already, there was still a cold in the air that reminded Susannah of the autumn more than the spring. Global warming, she thought and opened the window. Instantly, she was struck by the cold night breeze, which ran through her long black hair. She looked out through the window. Cinderwood never looked more beautiful than in the night, with all the streetlights lit and the houses dark. Suddenly, a movement on the street outside their house caught Susannah's eye, and she turned her head. On the sidewalk and in the middle of the street, a gang approached. There were about six or seven of them, all around six feet tall and wearing long sweatshirts with hoods. They didn't look like the usual teenagers that Susannah sometimes saw at school, however. They were walking slowly, and from what Susannah could see when they stepped into a light, some of them had silver-white hair and wrinkled faces. They could be fifty or sixty, if not older. She shrugged, and walked back to her bed. After just a few minutes, she fell asleep.

Chapter III: Ghosts of the Past

Red Sky City

April, Saturday 23rd

7: 54 AM

Jonah opened his eyes slowly. His room was covered in darkness, with only a few rays of sunlight desperately trying to reach through the thick curtains. He could hear Abigail snore in the room across the hallway. The room that had once been his mother's. She had said when they first came here that she wouldn't use Eric's room, no matter what. That she sensed something inside it. Jonah couldn't feel anything, but he had noticed that her eyes were glittering with a faint golden light when she said it. He yawned, and rose out of his bed. His jeans and t-shirt were spread over the floor; he picked them up and dressed quickly. His stomach was rumbling; he had been hungry since last night. As he pulled the t-shirt over his head, he heard the door to his room open.

- Don't move a muscle, a voice Jonah didn't recognize said. Otherwise, I might have to take action.

Jonah, still with his t-shirt wrapped around his head, suddenly felt a cold wind run up his right arm and up his shoulder. The wind ran up his neck, and when it came to his chin, Jonah's face was covered by a white, stone-cold fog. As he took a breath, the fog ran down his throat and he staggered backwards. He landed on the bed, and shut his mouth. He heard the unknown voice giggle.

- I thought an Heir of the Tormentor would be more of a challenge, it said, but I guess I was wrong. You do realize I can kill you where you stand, don't you? Hum once if you do.

Jonah hummed. Whoever this strange man - it was clearly a man, Jonah could tell from his voice - was, he had Jonah in a tight grip.

- Well, it's always polite for a guest to introduce themselves, the man said. The name's Loki. And I'm here to challenge you to a duel. You can put down your shirt now.

Jonah felt the grip around his mouth ease a bit, and lowered his arms slowly, putting the t-shirt on. Not even now, he could see Loki fully. From the waist and down, the visitor's body was covered in the same mist that had blocked his mouth just before. Loki smiled at him, and revealed a Duel Generator the color of a storm-clad sky on his left arm. Jonah nodded, and walked over to the closet. He hadn't used the Duel Generator in years, so it was covered by a thin layer of dust. He brushed off the dust easily, and strapped the Generator to his left arm. His deck lay in the drawer beside the bed, which it had done for the last six months. He walked over to the drawer, and opened it. He gasped. It had the same crimson glow around it as that day three years ago*. As he picked it up and put it in the Generator, the glow faded away. Jonah nodded, and turned around. Loki still stood on the same spot, with that tedious smile at his lips. He nodded at Jonah.

- Well, since I'm the challenger, Loki said quietly, I should go first. Any problems with that?

Tendrils of the mist drew closer to Jonah, wrapping around his left leg. Jonah shook his head, and Loki smiled again. He drew six cards, and Jonah drew five. Loki smiled.

- I'll start off with a monster. Namely, a Hunter Wolf. (800/400)

Suddenly, Jonah heard a howl from the mist; a grim, lonely howl. A shiver went down his spine as he saw a shadow moving inside the mist. A gray wolf, reaching up to Jonah's waist, walked up next to Loki, who placed two cards face-down.

- I'll end my turn with that.

Jonah nodded, and drew a card. Even though he hadn't dueled for the last six months or so, he still knew how his deck worked and smiled at his hand.

- I'll summon Jutte Fighter. (700/900)

A cloud of smoke appeared in front of Jonah, and a small man with a distinct Asian look jumped out of it. Jonah nodded.

- And then, I'll use it's effect to change Hunter Wolf to Defense Position. After that, I'll attack it.

The Jutte Fighter looked at the Hunter Wolf for a few seconds, and then picked up his dagger. With a carefully aimed toss, the dagger landed right in the wolf's forehead and it fell to the ground. The Asian smiled, and rushed over to the wolf, and stabbed it continuously with the dagger. Soon, the wolf faded into pixels. Loki smiled.

- Thank you. Now, I can activate this card.

One of his face-down card flipped up, revealing an image of a wolf lying on the ground, a deep wound in it's stomach. In the background, other wolves are stepping out of fog.

- It's called Desperate Cry. It lets me summon two more monsters with the same name as the destroyed monster. So, without further a due, I gain two more Hunter Wolves. (800/400) (800/400) But with Hunter Wolf's effect, both of them gain four hundred attack points for each other Beast that I control. (800/400 -> 1200/400) (800/400 -> 1200/400)

Jonah sighed, and placed two cards face-down.

- I'll end with a spell. Foolish Burial lets me send a Quillbolt Hedgehog to the Graveyard.

Loki drew a card.

- I'll summon Rescue Cat (300/100) in attack position.

A silent cry could be heard as a small white cat with a yellow bicycling helmet on it's head stepped out of the mist. Jonah laughed silently; it all seemed so wrong, a small cat with two wolves beside it. Loki smiled.

- I see you're not taking my Cat seriously, Jonah. Well, you better do. I use it's effect and send it to the Graveyard. Then, I can summon a Pack Wolf (1/?/?) and an X-Saber Airbellum. (3/1600/200)

The cat cried out in pain as it suddenly caught fire. As the last of the ashes spread across the mist and faded away, two more creatures took it's place; A smaller white wolf and an armed warrior with long saber-like claws and a tiger's head. Loki nodded at them.

- Now, Pack Wolf's effect activates, setting it's Level to 3 and it's attack and defense points to fifteen-hundred. Which means, I can use it for a Synchro Summon! I'll tune X-Saber Airbellum with Pack Wolf!

The Pack Wolf suddenly faded away, leaving nothing but a silver trail where it's body's outline used to be. The outline grew in size, until it was larger than any of the other monsters, standing well above six feet. Airbellum walked over to the outlines, and stopped inside them.

- The cold wind of the night chills your bones. The snow hammers into your body. You are the winter's warrior! Hailstorm Wolf! (6/2500/2100)

The mist blew up around the Airbellum, forcing the outline of the Pack Wolf closer to it. Then, in a flash of silver light, a new wolf stepped out of the mist. Standing seven feet tall, the wolf stood on it's hind legs. Its muscular body covered in thick brown fur, with a thin layer of frost on it. Loki continued.

- Now, since I control another Beast, both of my Hunter Wolves gain four hundred attack points. (1200/400 -> 1600/400) And my Hailstorm Wolf has another effect. It gains four hundred attack points for each Beast in my Graveyard! Which is another sixteen-hundred for him! (2500/2100 -> 4100/2100) Now, my Hunter Wolf attacks your Jutte Fighter!

Jonah smiled.

- Thanks, Loki. Now, I can activate one of my traps!

One of the face-down cards flip up, revealing a strange gadget with extendable arms.

- My Magic-Arm Shield lets me take control of one of your monsters, and change the attack to that monster. In other words, your Hailstorm Wolf!

The Hailstorm Wolf grunted at Loki, and jumped over to Jonah's side of the field. There, it let out a painful howl as it's attack points went straight back to twenty-five hundred. The Hunter Wolf crashed into it, it's attack points now being twelve-hundred, and the Hailstorm Wolf slashed back. As the smaller wolf shattered into a cloud of fur, Loki's Life Points fell to twenty-seven hundred. He smiled.

- Now that's more like it, Heir! I knew you would put up a match!

Ooo, first duel already, eh? I know I said it wouldn't be there until the fourth chapter, but I felt like introducing Loki now.

  • 2 weeks later...

A few. Perhaps, once every third or fourth chapter. There aren't that many people left to duel anymore; Jonah all grown-up, Susannah having seen the eradication of her hometown... They just don't like it as much anymore.

I had a feeling Jonah would be going out with Abbi. Well' date=' good Chapter anyway. I'd like to see how these twins become important later on.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned that in the Prologue. And thank you.

Indeed it could. I see now, once I've re-read it, it was more likely to mean that they just got closer as friends.

Which, in a sort of way, they did. But I still see your point, and I'm glad you liked the chapter.

Thought you'd like it.

[spoiler=First, I was about to name the chapter...]

I can't believe it's not Death Note.

And for all of you readers that don't feel like commenting, the first duel will probably be in the fourth chapter.

Tectonix: I agree whole-heartedly, script format is just annoying. Especially if you have a character whose name is unknown and you have to use ????.

I don't do quotation marks, it's not my thing. If it's for dialogue, I go for hyphens instead. If it's for thoughts, I use italics.
