-Diamond in the Rough-

Sub-Type Showdown

Diamond in the Rough 3 has finally arrived. In honor of YCMaker's recent upgrade to the card maker, this will be a contest of sub-types.

This is a card-making contest. In this contest, entrants will be making cards to support, and make more useful, one or more of the varied and interesting sub-types in the game. You may not use custom created sub-types, only sub-types found in the official TCG.

Each entrant will create 1-3 cards (no more, no less). These cards will relate to, support, or otherwise increase the playability of one of the official game sub-types. All monsters created must have a sub-type, and you can choose to make spell and/or trap cards as support for your card or further support for the sub-type.

Official Sub-Types:

[spoiler=Tuner]

Tuner monsters are used to summon Synchro monsters. They usually have a lower level and an interesting effect, though a few have had higher levels. Remember to keep them balanced and not make it too easy to get a Synchro monster out. Remember that if you choose this sub-type you'll need to choose a secondary sub-type for your second monster.

[spoiler=Spirit]

Spirit monsters are a special kind of creature that returns to the owner's hand at the end of the turn they are summoned. Also, they can't be special summoned, so remember that. Make sure to include the following effect on your card if you make a Spirit monster:

  • This card cannot be Special Summoned. This card returns to the owner's hand during the End Phase of the turn that this card is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up.

NOTE: Some Spirit monsters deviate from this pattern, like Yamato-no-Kami. If you want to deviate as well, you are free to do so, just make sure it still returns to your hand.

[spoiler=Toon]

Toon monsters are Pegasus' main attraction. They rely on Toon World to attack their opponent directly. Some have life point costs to attack, others don't. For help with what kind of Toon monster to make, check out the different classes of Toons described here: http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Toon_Monsters

Any class of Toon is accepted.

[spoiler=Gemini]

Gemini monsters are an interesting breed of creature. They start out as Normal Monsters unless you Normal Summon them again, after which they gain unique and interesting effects. Gemini monsters always have an effect like this:

  • This card is treated as a Normal Monster while face-up on the field or in the Graveyard. While this card is face-up on the field, you can Normal Summon it to have it be treated as an Effect Monster with this effect:
    Enter whatever effect you want to give it here.

[spoiler=Union]

Union monsters act like Equip Spell Cards. They usually have a specific one or two cards that they equip to. If you are creating a Union monster, you can either have it equip to an existing card, or you can create another card that it equips to (remember that all monsters you create must have a sub-type). Union monsters always have this effect:

  • Once per turn, during your Main Phase, if you control this card on the field, you can equip it to your "INSERT MONSTER NAME HERE" as an Equip Card, OR unequip the Union equipment and Special Summon this card in face-up Attack Position. While equipped to a monster by this card's effect, Enter whatever effect you want to give it here. (1 monster can only be equipped with 1 Union Monster at a time. If the equipped monster is destroyed by battle*, destroy this card instead.)

* = Crab reminded me that not all Union monsters only protect from battle damage, so if you want to you can take out the "by battle" part and have it protect against any damage. It's up to you.

Summary of Entrant Duties:

-Make 1-3 Cards (at least 1 must be a monster, and all monsters must have a sub-type)

-Cards must be support for the sub-type(s) you choose

-Artist Credit must be given for images used on cards

-Cards must be balanced, and fit the theme

-Entries are due by 8pm forum time on Friday February 27th, 2009

NOTE: If you choose to make support for the Tuner sub-type, you must make a minimum of 2 monsters. 1 will be your Tuner and the other will be another sub-type. You can make one support the other or both support something else, that's fine. Just remember that your minimum, should you choose Tuner, will be 2 cards rather than 1. The maximum for everyone remains at 3 regardless of sub-type chosen.

Entrant Application:

Judges:

-Myself (Darth Browarod)

-Icyblue, recently appointed Custom Cards Moderator ^_^

-Flow and support of card(s) and sub-type

-Spelling/Grammar (OCG)

2nd Place: 1 +Rep, 2500 points, and a free name change!

3rd Place: 1 +Rep, 2000 points, and a free name change!

4th Place: 1 +rep, 1500 points!

5th Place: 1 +rep, 1000 points!

NOTE: Free name changes are optional, you don’t have to get one if you don’t want it. If you decide to get a name change, it will be posted in the Emporium thread but is separate from those changes, and you can get one regardless of when your last change was, and it won’t count against your next one. Since name changes no longer cost points, "free" just means that it doesn't count against waiting periods. Points/reps will be added to the respective winners' accounts after the results are posted.

I have a question:

Will posting 3 cards give us greater chances for winning than posting 1 card?

Or is this quality before quantity contest?

I always say quality over quantity, especially since anyone picking Tuner has to make at least 2 cards. So, no, 3 vs 1 won't give you an edge since it will most likely be an average (though if you have a bad card, it might hurt you).

Here's the entry

Lore:Once per turn, during your Main Phase, if you control this card on the field, you can equip it to your "Serpent Night Dragon" as an Equip Card, OR unequip the Union equipment and Special Summon this card in face-up Attack Position. While equipped to a monster by this card's effect, increase its ATK and DEF by 300 points for every Dragon-Type monster on the field. If a dragon on your side of the field is destroyed, inflict 500 points of damage to both players.
