The reason for pain is a warning signal to your body of damage to an important organ. The more important the organ or bone is, the more urgent the warning is and thus the more important the better. Such as your "lower extremities" are used for reproduction and urinating, two extremely important items for the survival of a species. Second, your ribs protect your vital organs. Now, imagine if you chop slowly on said "lower extremities" and "exploring" the victim's anus with a sharp pitchfork. That, my friend, would hurt. You didn't think I had that in mind?
