It's not a debate. But more of a challege. One of intelligence, faith and understanding. You talk big, but can you see your words? You speak of problems, but can you help? Let us rejoice, for you have been chosen.

I pose but a simple question unto you.

If time were to stop (or for you Science Junkies matter to stop moving), for what would be considered 50yrs. Would time have moved forward at all?

Person who posts the best answer/most logical/etc. Will receive an as of yet, undefined reward. But I assure you, it's great.

EDIT: In order to reduce clutter in this thread, I will edit your posts in Blue, with my reply if it warrants it. So check your posts frequently.

There's no such thing as "time." It was just another way for us to measure evolution. And if the flow of "time" were to stop moving, 50 "years" would never happen even though "days" and "weeks" and "months" and "years" have passed.

(This is coming straight from my mind and what I believe.)

Of course it wouldn't. Time cannot go by, therefore the 50 years cannot go by. You will be eternally frozen, as you will be stuck in the same second, no more time, no more minutes, no more hours, no more days. So, to answer your question, time would not move forward, and the period of time being frozen would never end, because if time doesn't move forward, then 50 years can't go by.

No. If time were to stop then nothing will happen. You won't age, you won't change in size, the earth wouldn't rotate, plants won't die, so time wouldn't go by, etc. And when you say considered yrs do you mean how many years would pass by if time was moving forward.

Since time has stopped' date=' nothing will happen.

You won't move, nor will you age, nothing can go on. You're trapped in the position you were in when time stopped and will remain that way until time becomes unfrozen.

I asked if 50yrs would have passed, if time had stopped for what would be considered 50yrs. Not to rephrase what I said in a... well... worst way.

I'm not interested in the prize. I just wanted to throw my 2 cents into this about time.

Actually' date=' it's impossible to stop time.

Even if you [i']could[/i] stop/start time, there would still be an elapse of time between when you stopped time and when you started it again. Basically, the idea of stopping time is like an oxymoron.

We know it's not possible, except here we are asking one of those "What if..." questions.

I'm saying that time can't be manipulated, even in a "what if" situation. Time is just a measurement.

The thing is about a "What If" situation, is I can say this:

What if it could? And if it could, what would happen in the situation stated by Icy?

Everything would be frozen.

But time wouldn't be stopped. You can't freeze time.

That's only 1 way of looking at it. As that statement is the given. As is the other one stated.

Thing is, in this situation in the thread, you can. It is a "What If". So, since everything time is frozen, everything else would be also, which means you would be stuck in a permanent time stop.

If time were to stop, how would we measure how long it has been stopped for?

For to stop time would inquire that everyone and everything affected by this phenomenon would also be stopped, or to better put it "Be non functional for the period of time that time would be un accountable for".

Your statement requires there is to be something or someone, that is not affected by this to have recorded the past "50 years" of time being "stopped". In which case the applicable no longer can be applied to the present, the past nor the future.

Meaning in order to record a time that has been stopped, there cannot be a time at all.

But merely a presence that is remarkably faster than those currently surrounded by it, to where if one were to experience this 'second dimension' if you will, would appear that time for those whom are out of this 'second dimension' has stopped.

Then again, is time even a measurable force? If so, what is it measured by?

Distance? Speed? Growth? Weight? Power? Knowledge?

But to answer your question, in the simplest of terms to where one would be so bored to even ask it.

If time has stopped, there would be no moving forward, no growth in years. So, No.

Your question is rather confusing.

The first part contradicts the second one. How can time move when it had previously stopped (or had been stopped by something/someone)?

Thats where imagination comes into play, for the sake of theory.

Imagination or not, time can't be frozen and flowing at the same time.

Also, answering the first question is only possible if we are certain that after this paralysis, time would flow again. If that were the case, one second, fifty years or million millenniums would all be just one single moment in time, irrelevant and ineffective for all the matter that had been frozen.

It's likely that I got this question wrong. I think you were wondering how many units of something would make fifty years in the scenario. If that's what you wanted us to comment on, then the answer is impossible to be given. If time were frozen, the whole system of time would collapse. After the defrosting, though, it would be reborn and would continue to flow normally. Of course, since I'm speculating from a scientific point of view, I'm not taking into account the presence of a super powerful force that could alter this (God).

I did say "for what could be considered 50yrs".

And I did answer.

I don't think you get what I'm saying. Even if time "stopped", there would still be a time lapse between when timed stopped and 50 years after when time stopped. So it's IMPOSSIBLE to stop time in ANY situation. Even if everything in the universe and beyond was frozen, it would still be frozen for a certain amount of time. Be it forever, or 50 years. You can't stop a measurement.

So your saying, that when time is unfrozen, we would leave off at 50 years into the future, and have some sort of time lag, and everything would catch up immediately after time is unfrozen?

If everything was preserved in perfect stasis, then yes and no.

Technically, 50 years would have passed by.

However, since nothing could occur in those 50 years, they're meaningless, had no effect, and may as well not have existed.

Is this only on Earth?

If it was, the sun could continue to age and get closer to supernova or whatever the hell happens when it goes boom. So then we lost 50 years of Earth's time in which it can sustain life.
