Side Decking This Format

Recommended Posts

As we all know, Siding Decking is an important skill/asset every Yugioh player has at his/her disposal. However, it surprises me how many people don’t focus on the skillful aspects of using it. Most people put in 15 cards that counter the Meta, and say “Oh, Bang up job, I’m going to top.”

This is NOT the right way to think.

What makes certain players better is the fact the side deck shapes Game 2 and Game 3 so heavily. Without a proper side deck, you will most likely lose to someone who is competent in side decking.

When building a Yugioh deck, you must consider each cards interactions with every other card in the deck. This builds synergy and makes the deck better, if you have tons of synergy and can create powerful moves or put yourself in a game winning position. What does this have to do with side deck? You must consider how the side will integrate into the deck.

Say you are playing Flamvell Cat, and want to use Nobleman of Crossout’s for the mirror. This would be a stupid mistake to make, as NoC will hurt your deck as well. So, you would obviously want something to take care of Face-down monsters without harming yours, so you might decide to use Shield Crush. Now, in using Shield Crush, you must think about how that also runs in the deck. Is it going to be a good card because it can kill F/Ds? What if they sided into a more aggressive build to counter my sets? Will Shield Crush be a good card then? Will it ever be a dead draw? What if I can’t use it, what purposes can it serve? Do I pitch it for Monk?

As you side more and more cards in, you must consider how your deck runs and how you will have to change while playing it.

Now, you must expand your scope, and see if that same card will be good against other decks in the Meta. You want to milk out your spaces, and covering a multitude of decks with as few cards as possible is a good idea. Repeat this process until you think you have a good 15 card side.

Now that you’ve made a side, test it against the decks, adapt to the decks, and see what is useful and what isn’t, and so on and so forth, until you have "perfected" your side deck.

Discuss how you side deck, and what type of cards you should side deck.

There's not much that your deck shouldn't theoretically already be able to take care of. Maybe a couple D.D. Crows, since you probably get a lot of hand advantage?

Also, if you aren't running Doomcaliber, you should probably main it @ 3 (if you can afford to).

Well, think of this: How can a 40 card deck deal with EVERY other 40 card combination in Yugioh?

Let's say you are running Flamvell Cat, and have won game one.

Your opponent is also running Flamvell Cat, and is siding into Mirror of Oaths. You realize this, and with the fact that they are going second, which means they get a better set up than you.

Why wouldn't you want to side against what they should be setting up for?

I run anti-meta Gadgets currently and my Locals consist of mainly of Gadgets, GBs, ppl trying to keep LS alive, and Hamster. So i side mainly against those but also against Black Wings and other decks people LOLrun. I also try to fallow the 2 Rule meaning i dont side more than 2 of any card regardless.

Current Side

Ally Bomb x2

Nobleman of Crossout x2

Fiendish Chain x2

Pulling the Rug x2

Legendary Juju Master x2

My Body x2

Giant Rat x2

Dust Tornado x1

However unless the deck is made to counter mine i normally never side in casual play.
