Marble' date=' YGO villians could be worse. And generally they have a reason for why they do something except Zork, who is just evil.

I find it usually revolves around generic world domination (save for Pegasus, if I recall) with a ridiculous modus operandi involving cards. Even when it's not about domination of anything, come on, they're playing cards to achieve their impossible dreams.

As much as I like the game itself, adapting it to a tv show results in some horrible plots. Why on earth is world domination and the defeat of great evils dependent on winning at cards?

It's anti-climatic to see things like "I will do whatever it takes to stop you! I am fighting for my friends and the fate of this world, I will defeat you!!... I draw a card."

This is really my own opinion, I just couldn't suspend disbelief enough while watching the anime. So I guess my take on yugioh villains is hampered by my opinion of the show itself. Because as deep as they could be (and they really weren't that developed), when they brought out a duel disk after legitimately destroying and/or killing (I mean shadow-realming) a bunch of stuff... it looked ridiculous. :/

I think it's just how it works in that universe. Like how everything is decided by sports in sports manga, or tournament fighting competitions in fighting manga.

Yeah, I edited my post, didn't explain it all too well at first.

The thing about sports manga is that no-one tries to take over the world with a tennis ball. And fighting manga, well, if they can blow buildings up with punches or HADOUKEEEN, I'm okay with them wanting to take stuff over, because they're actually threatening. Y'know, ZA WARUDO seems a lot more effective than a Blue-Eyes White Dragon card.

Really? Then what the hell are those kids even playing for? I don't want to watch tennis unless the world is at stake.

Baki The Grappler, try that for size. ;D

They're playing to be the very best, like no-one ever was.

Last I saw, that was a valid premise for some very popular anime.

About Baki, never heard of it, skimmed wikipedia and found no reference to tennis balls, just legitimate fighting and patricidal tendencies - got me interested despite the lack of balls.

I mean... y'know.

Well sometimes. I suppose, with expections (a few I'm not going through them all):

- Kaiba Seto, he was just displaying his ruthless nature that had helped him conquerer his adoptive father. That had been beaten into him. My guess is Duel Monsters was something his parents had gotten him interested in.

- Fujiwara Yusuke, who was still reeling from his parents death when he was a child, he feared being forgotten...he turned to Darkness because he felt the other could help. (He used a duel to try and force Fubuki to submit to his way of thinking, and cough up his darkness)

- Marufuji Ryo, it was more of a defense mechanism to end up the way he did, he wanted power and he'd been brought up with Duel Monsters, so it was natural to go for that method.

I do get your point though to be honest. Although with the help of the Darkness Games/Yami No Games, everything became real so using Duel Monsters worked.
