Just try to find letters in the combinations of symbols.

Lol, I knew it was easy, but I don't use it because it's annoying as f*** to type, and it's makes you look noobish, not 1337. I actually don't even know if 1337 is a short version of elite.

It is, it was originally created to confuse n00bs, but the n00bs started picking it up too so 1337 sort of died down. it can still be used to confuse n00bs though. Same as Alt+F4.

I know leet/1337 speak a bit, but I have to confess that I'm not a pro. You can tell by my writing above. How do you e\do a K and D in 1337???

I used to speak 1337, back when it was just numbers to letters. T = 7, L = 1, E =3, 2 = The word too, to, and two, 5 = S, 6 = G.

Then stupid idiots got into it, who wanted every letter to be purposely difficult to read. It started as a cool little thing, and even had decent moments of shorthand, but when you need to type four button to make an M sound (|\/|) you should probably just quit life.
