Revealing someone's IP address to the public for all to see.
Is that illegal? because I'm seeing this everywhere now

I don't know anything about that but since you can find someones address by IP's, I'm guessing it is. But, there is something called a "Dynamic IP". It changes every time you open your computer.

No it isn't and there are easy ways to find someone's IP address. IP addresses are used to identify a device on a internet service. IP addresses don't really give too close of information where you live just the general region your internet comes from.

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal. I can use your IP to somehow steal your ID. I'd be sent to jail for ID theft. I wouldn't have "Illegal IP search" or w/e on the charges however.

As for a forum showing the IP's of it's users to the members, I doubt that's illegal too, as I'm allowed to see all of yours, and the law has yet to attack YCM.

Any mod or staff person on any decent forum can tell what a user's IP is.

I don't think anything of value or worth can be learned for any average computer user. Just like I could post my entire DNA sequence and an average person wouldn't be able to tell you anything from that.

Well You can basically find someone's actual home address through an IP address (plus more info) if You have the time (like the police/FBI/any law inforcment office does) plus My home address & real name have been revealed & posted on various forums

I can't say with 100% accuracy, but I have a feeling a good percentage of YCM is not actually involved with the FBI or other law enforcement.

It isn't public from a site owner's point of view. It ties a person to a physical address just in case. That's like saying that when you call someone, your number should always show up as hidden. Haha, no.

Your IP address [i]alone[/i] cannot really give anyone any sort of information; at best, if they are really somewhat intelligent, it can give them a country, a state, and maybe possibly a town or city, but that last one still probably won't turn out right.

Case in point, my friend who lives down south(ish) hacked his own IP, and it told him he lived twenty miles from where he actually lived. BUT IT GOT THE STATE RIGHT SO IT MUST WORK!

Basically, this.

I've done it with many of my friend's IP addresses with many different "IP trackers" and the such. Out of 5 or 6 IP addresses, only 2 gave me the correct town. Strangely, the two IP addresses that were FURTHEST from each other, came up as the same place even though their houses are easily 10 - 15 miles away from each other.

Dark knows of just how awesome the ycm IP search engine is. ;D It'll sift through routers and proxys ect. =D
