Lance was a bit taken aback by his opponent's first turn.
"Impressive, but now it's my turn!" Lance said drawing from his deck. "I lose 500 Life Points now because of your Countdown to Destruction. Next, I'll summon my monster, Arthur's Descendant." A war torn man materialized on the field wearing heavy gold armor and a cape.
"His effect allows him to gain 500 extra ATK when my Life Points are lower than yours. Now, I'll have him attack your Hummingbird." The warrior jumped high into the air, and came down smashing his fist into the bird's face.
"Finally, I'll set two cards face-down and end my turn."

Kazuya chuckled at his opponent slightly, as he saw the 3 face downs. They weren't a threat to him.He knew what he was doing.

"My turn. Draw."

Kazuya had drawn another good card. This would be a good turn for him, provided there was nothing with a secret effect in his hand.

"I'll start by summoning Torn Hellhound, in attack position. Then I'll activate my spell card Distortion Sealing Wave. I can only activate this card if I have a face up Torn monster on my field, but it means that no spell or traps can be activated until your end phase. Then i'll attack your Chameleon soldier."

Kazuya smirked again. To him, his opponent was pathetic at best. And Kazuya hadn't even revealed Hellhounds ability yet. Laughing, mocking the opponent, he watched Hellhound destroy the Reptile in one bite.

"Now i'll activate Hellhounds ability, letting me summon a monster from my deck who's attack points are equal to or less than the attack points of your Chameleon. So i'll be summoning my Torn Spellbinder. Attack him directly now! Then i'll set two cards face down, that'll be all. Think you can top that?"

Kazuya chuckled again. Torn Spellbinder turned and looked at him for a monent, as the turn ended. Not yet. We're not going to do that just yet. Lets see what this guy thinks he can do first.

"I knew you would have some sort of response to my attack," Dylan replied, "My attack was a lure, to see what it might be." Dylan watched his monster take a defensive stance (DEF 0). "Forcing it to defend? Oh I'm sure I can find a way to deal with that." Dylan's voice was calm, which reflected his mood. His opponent technically had the advantage, but it was still early in the duel, so that was likely to change, and he wasn't desperate to win this duel. Sure, that number card might be hissing at him to do so, but what Dylan truly wanted didn't need the numbers card to obtain. "I'll place two cards of my own face-down," he continued, "and I think that will do for now. You seem to be desperate to win. Maybe you should being out your Number card."

Hawk finally realized that it must be his number card making him want to win, no matter what. He decided to the influence of his number card, and stood up with a smirk.

"All right," Hawk said to another person near him. "Let's duel!" He activated his duel disk, and so did his opponent.

"I guess you don't talk much. That's fine with me, this duel will just end much quicker!" Hawk waited for a reply, expecting his opponent to try and prove him wrong. His opponent just gave an intimidating smile, and Hawk did the same. Okay, you can go first! His opponent looked slightly confused, as he was one who thought it was always best to go first.

Well that was a dumb move, Tari thought.

"I play my face-down Dark Illusion, with this I negate and destroy your Ex-Quip Bee," she said.

The bug's attack hit her Obsidian Dragon but, rather than destroying it, the dragon stayed intact and kept the opponent's monster at bay.

"And since my dragon wasn't destroyed you can't use your number's effect," Tari grinned in satisfaction.

Her opponent finished his turn, allowing Tari to take her own.

"I summon Armageddon Knight in attack mode!" She said, a dark warrior taking its place next to Dark Grepher "And with his effect I send Dark Horus from my Deck to my Graveyard."

Another card slid out from Tari's duel disk and she sent it to her graveyard slot.

That's 5 monsters in my grave, perfect, she thought Now the fun can begin.

"I overlay Armageddon Knight, Dark Grepher and Obsidian Dragon!" she said, the three monsters transforming into blobs of dark purple energy and flying up into the sky only to strike the ground and begin to open a dark hold within it "I use these 3 monsters to construct the overlay network. Now Exceed Summon! Rise Number 52: Corruption!"

What looks like a mass of ancient metal in the shape of an hour glass emerged from the hold the monsters had created, 3 orbs of light circling around it. Once it emerged it began to change, the layers of metal shifting before a pair of arms burst from within it and the top opened up to reveal a head wrapped in bandages, a glowing number 52 appearing on its hip. At the same time, the same glowing number appeared on the palm of Tari's left hand.

"Now here's where things get messy," Tari began "I detach an overlay unit from Corrpution in order to activate his effect!"

Corruption reached out and grabbed one of the floating orbs in his hand, crushing it.

"With this effect I can Summon Dark Nephthys from out of play," Tari said "And as an added bonus she can't be destroyed by card effects this turn!"

Corrpution spread both arms wide, openeing up a black portal in front of him from which a dark, metellic bird with flaming black wings and tail emerged from within, letting out a loud screach as it emerged.

"And now Nephthys has a trick of her own," Tari explained "When she's Special Summoned I can destroy 1 face-down spell or trap card on the field. Nephthys, do it!"

Dark Nephthys eyes glowed and she let out another screech, flapping her wings and sending a wave of fire towards one of her opponent's face down cards.

"And now, Corrpution attack Number 42: Breaker Beetle, after which Dark Nephthys will attack you directly!"

Diablo left the group after a new member appeared from the streets. He wandered back down the abandoned tunnel until he reached the location of the Numbers Tournament, where duels had already begun taking place. He chuckled, believing all he saw to be futile and unworthy to duel him. Then from behind him came a femenine voice. He turned around slowly, seeing a tall, delicate looking woman with a rose coloured duel disk. She was shuffling her deck and looking at Diablo with a determined look.
"Umm... will you.. umm... duel me?"
Diablo nearly laughed out loud. "You?! Duel Me?! I don 't have time for such... immbeciles like you! I- b****"
Suddenly the form of Diablo glowed brightly as he swore out loud. The light engulfed him and a new figure emerged. Instead of Diablo stood Lumia, another delicate looking girl. She smiled pleasently at the duelist, ignoring her wide gaping mouth and confused eyes.
"I however, do wish to duel you!" Lumia activated her duel disk quickly and winked. "Let's Duel! You take the first move!"
"B****" repeated Diablo in her head.

Tari gave a satisfied smirk at her opponent's comment.

"Will you now?" She said mischeivously "And I suppose that monster has something to do with it, right? Well either way it's my turn now!" Tari drew a new card from her deck, adding it to her hand.

Let's see, she pondered, looking down at her hand So many ways I could end this now. Of course I probably shouldn't take his face down monster too lightly, if he's so confident that it'll help him then I'll just have to mess with his expectations.

"I summon Phantom of Chaos!" Tari declared, a swirling vortex of darkness appearing on her field. "And with its effect I remove Shadowpriestess of Ohm from my grave..." The vortex shifted, a shape rising up from it and taking the form of an entirely black Shadowpriestess of Ohm "...Allowing my Phantom to gain the same stats and effect as my shadowpriestess, that effect allowing me to tribute any number of DARK monsters per turn and inflict 800 damage to you for each one." Tari's grin broadened sligtly "Bye-bye now. I play the effect of Phantom Shadowpriestess of Ohm, sending itself and my Dark Nephthys to the graveyard to take out the rest of your life points!"

The two monsters Tari declared where both consumed by a raging black fire which shot towards Tari's opponent.

Track watched his opponent complete his turn by placing a monster in face down defence position and two face downs. Track stared at the face down monster and the two face down cards. Kazuya laughed at the opponents attempts to attack him. Smiling, he mocked his foe again.

"You really think that'll work? Ha!" Kazuya pulled a card out of his spell and trap zone. A trap card, and an evil one at that. His foe had given him a Dark type monster, and Kazuya didn't intend on changing attributes any time soon.

"First of all, using Distortion Sealing Wave to tribute your Spy and be able to activate a Trap card. I am well aware of your spy's effect, I don't care. Well my trap card Distortion Barrier should seal your fate. Now I can Discard a torn monster from my hand to destroy your monster."

Kazuya looked upon his opponent. He had no protection, and only two face downs to try and stop Kazuya's attack. One of Kazuya's monster zones was crippled, but he didn't need a field full of monsters to win.

"My turn. I'll start by tributing Torn Hellhound in order to summon Torn Warmonger. Next I'll activate my Torn Spellbinders effect, Discarding a spell card and sending itself to the graveyard. This lets me summon another Torn Warmonger from my deck, since the total levels of all monsters on the field are 6. Now I'll activate their effects. I can Banish a Torn monster from the graveyard to decrease one of my warmongers attack points by that amount. For every 600, I destroy a card on the field. Banishing Torn Hellhound, I decrease a Warmongers attack points by 1900, and get rid of your three face downs."

Kazuya smirked again. Everything was ready, the requirements had been met. It was time to unveil his number.

"I overlay my warmongers, and create the overlay network! Xyz summon, Number 81: Distortion Dragon!"

As the spiralling space/time rift opened up, the figure revealed itself, as a grey ball of energy. Daunting wings and arms appeared out of the side, and the black spikes coming out of its elbows revealed that it wasn't a gimmick. Its long neck penetrated the front of the ball, as it reared its ugly head. The orb embedded into its chest started to glow, and the space around itself seemed to be unstable.

"How do you like Number 81? If you think you're scared now, lets just activate his ability and see what happens. You see, I can send one of his Xyz material to the graveyard, to summon a monster with attack less than the Xyz material."

The dragons orb glowed even brighter, and turned a dark red, as the area around them did also. A rift opened up, where the Xyz material flew into. Out of it arrived Torn Spellbinder, back from the graveyard. Kazuya saw it as the time to end the duel.

"I'd really love to duel you longer to make things interesting, but I have places to be. Plus you're boring me. Distortion Dragon, attack him Directly. You too Spellbinder."

Neku hurried to get out of the mass of people gathering there. He found a place when he could at least hear his thoughts. He looked around and then made a decision. He just shuffled his deck a little, activated his duel disk and then shouted:

DUEL!

A guy just turned around and also activated his duel disk.

Alright, let see what you got! Why dont you start?

♫...And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had...♫

Around and around the words of the song swirled around Rina's head, her mind imagining a broken tune vainly trying to catch up with the words she knew so well. She had only heard the song a couple of times, on a radio that worked only half of the time, but it had been enough. The song had struck a chord in the young Rina Tsukuda, resounding deeply within for only one reason: it seemed to describe her entire existence.

♫ ...I find it hard to tell you
'Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World... ♫

And so it was. Take the very scene that lay before Rina's dark eyes; a trash-strewn street with broken-down buildings that dulled into a sort of gray bleariness the farther you looked down either side of the road. And yet, only across a small bridge a mere few miles down this very road would one find themselves in the glamorous world of the upper class, in which life was easy and the food everlasting. The phrase "Mad World" did not even begin to describe New Domino City.

The only thing that made this stretch of pavement different from the rest of the Satellite was the excessive number of vagrants, and the subway entrance. For the former, who stretched out their hands piteously to Rina, the dark-clotched girl moved past quickly, without so much as a glance; she had no pity for those weak layouts; in fact, she tended to not feel emotion for about everything nowadays.

But the subway- this, she moved to with an laser focus. She strided into and past the entrance, graffitied and with the paint peeling as it was, quickly, and likewise by the station itself; they were not her target. She moved down the long-rotten track into heavier and heavier darkness as she moved away from the entrance, but she did not mind the dark, and having long memorized the path to her objective, she had no trouble at all. She found her target in relatively good time- a light flickering in the gloom of the underground tunnel. And what was this target?...

Emerging from the darkness and into the light (A false metaphor as long as she was stuck on this side of the Daedalus Bridge, she couldn't help but thinking), Rina entered into the staging ground of the Numbers Tournament. A collection of the Satellite's top duelists- an unimpressive group, of course, but there were some viable opponents- had gathered here, and had begun their duels for the legendary "Numbers" cards; one of which Rina already possessed. Her sole interest in being here was obtaining more.

Several duelists had already begun their battles, but Rina deigned not to; if some one wished to challenge her, they must be the one to approach. Rina had an aversion to most other people, and if they wished to duel her, they better man up and ask.

Kariya was growing bored of watching all the duels. "Been a while since I dusted off my deck, wonder if I can find a test subject here." He thought to himself. He turned, and immediately called out the first duelist he saw. "Hey, you. You can be my test dummy to see how well you people here duel." The person being called out was rather offended, considering his behaviour immediately as rude, and reacted somewhat violently. "Oh, so you think you're better than me, huh, pops? Well I guess an old man like you needs to be put in his place!" To which Kariya chuckled. "Perfect." He thought to himself, as both duelists activated their duel disks.

"Well, as an 'old man' as you put it, I suppose I need to go first to even stand a hope of a chance." Kariya taunted, drawing his first card. "Well, I'll start by summoning my Red Gadget, in attack mode! And summoning him allows me to add Yellow Gadget to my hand!" The gadget formed in front of him, it didn't appear anything spectacular, but Kariya thought it was, for now at least. "Next, I'll activate these 2 cards from my hand! Illustious Mirrors - Red and Green Gadget!." In front of him appeared 2 "mirrors" within each an image of the respective gadget appeared. "Now, as you may not knwo, neither of these cards can be destroyed by card effects, and since I have my Red Gadget mirror my Green Gadget mirror gets its effect. Which means I'll get any Gadget in my next draw phase that I please. This duel's already mine, but I'll play this face-down just in case." Kariya smirked, he knew his plan would get out one of his strongest plays in his next turn.

"Sure you will," Dylan replied, drawing another card. "My turn then, and I summon out the tuner Fisher Snake." A sea-green snake, with a hooked end to a long tale, emerged onto his field (ATK 100), and immediately plunged said tail straight into Dylan's duel disk. "When this card is summoned, I can summon a level 4 or lower Sea Serpent from my graveyard, but it loses all it's defensive points and can't attack." Abyss Knight was dragged out by the tail (DEF 0). "Now, I tune my level 1 Fisher Snake with my level 4 Abyss Knight to synchro summon the Sea Dragon Rider Tritus." The snake bit down on it's own tail, forming a ring, and surrounded the other monster. A flash of light later, and another warrior riding a sea serpent emerged, this one atop a larger mount and wielding a trident (ATK 2100).

"Tritus is a very special synchro monster. When he's out, it's bad news for Xyz monsters, because they all lose 200 points for each of their ranks. Now, since Tritus is not a number, it can't destroy your Galaxy Queen, but thanks to it's own effect it can't be destroyed at all this turn. Still, Tritus will attack Galaxy Queen." Upon his command, the dragon roared and lumbered towards the spellcaster. "Because when Tritus battles an Xyz monster, that monster loses one of it's materials at the start of that battle." A beam of light shot from the trident, on a collision course with one of the points of light orbiting the other monster."
"I'll place a card face-down and end my turn there," Dylan concluded.

Track watched his opponent use the effect of his cards to send Tracks cards from the top of his deck to the graveyard. Track took three cards from the top of his deck and placed them in the graveyard. After he ended his turn he placed four cards from the top of his deck to the graveyard. Track thought to himself. "So he uses a deck thats meant to wipe out mine huh." After his opponent had finished his turn Track drew one card and stared at his hand. Track smiled and started his turn. "Okay i start by activating my face down. Mecha Bio Bomb. By discarding one Mecha monster from my hand i can detsroy one spell or trap card on the field. Like your face down. So i discard Mecha Prototype. And when hes discarded from my hand i get to destroy one monster on the field. Like your Gardna. Now Mecha Knight and Mecha Worker finish off the duel."

A satisfied smirk crossed Tari's face as her opponent took the full force of her Phantom's effect, reducing his life points to 0.

"Heh, so naive," Tari chuckled.

A glowing blue square appeared above her opponent as he lay on the ground and flew towards Tari, with a surprised frown Tari caught the glowing shape and it soon revealed itself to be a card, the very Number card that her opponent had been using.

"That was weird," Tari commented, looking at the card "Number 42: Breaker Beetle. Tch, what a rip off. This thing won't even work in my deck, even if I could summon it."

She cast one more glance at her defeated opponent and then around at all the other duellists and shrugged, slotting her new card into her deck and walking off, wondering what to do next.

Finally, one opponent did approach Rina. It was a man, tall and confident, and as he strided across to her, Rina could see his eyes were locked hungrily on her- not on her figure, no, but the prize she was carrying. He wants my Number card, she thought, as much as I want his.

Her opponent did not mince words, only extending his duel disk and uttering two syllabes: "Let's duel." Rina did him one better- she didn't say anything at all, just raised her arm and prepped her duel disk.

Rina's LP: 4000
Opponent's LP: 4000

"I'll start." Rina said softly. "I Set one monster in face-down defense position and three face-downs. Then, I end my turn." Four rectangles of light, three forward-facing and one, horizontal and in front of the others, appeared in front of Rina, as she stood patiently, waiting for her opponent to make a move.

Do they have any idea how hard it is to find this place? Bella thought to herself, pulling her bike to the subway entrance and swinging her legs off the bike and removing her helmet, pausing to flick one of the black strands framing her face from her eyes. She tucked her helmet under her arm and detached her Battle-City style Duel Disk from the side of the bike and placing it on her left arm, replacing the helmet where the Disk had previously been.

The alleged Numbers Tournament was said to be held here, and since formality tended to be in the form of an ambush, arriving 'fashionably late' just meant she was more likely to see the competition before they jumped her. If that was the case, she wanted to have her cards ready. Even after all this time of having Number 16, she had yet to have seen another "Number" card, so the news of the tournament with these cards intrigued her. She knew there had to be others, since her monster specifically stated it could only be defeated by one.

Bella allowed herself a tight smile and walked into the subway area, sticking mostly to the shadows and noting that duels were going on. Good, I'm not too late. They probably won't even notice my arrival.

"Alright, it's my turn now," said Lance, a bit nervous about the presence of the continual burn trap card his opponent had out. "I draw, and take 500 damage." Lance looked down at his hand and smiled. "I tribute my Arthur's Descendant to summon Round Table, Lancelot."
A blond haired man clad in shining silver armor emerged from the field, gripping a long sword in one hand and a shield in the other.
"With his effect, once per turn I'm allowed to special summon one level 4 or lower warrior type monster in my Graveyard. So, I summon Arthur's Descendant."
The golden armored warrior reappeared on the field, only to once again disintegrate.
"However, I activate my continuous trap card, Ultimate Offering in order to tribute my Arthur's Descendant once more. I now summon, Round Table, Gawain."
Yet another knight appeared next to Lancelot, clad in similar armor, but with darker hair and a mustache.
"Now, I'll have Round Table Lancelot attack first, with his second effect inflicting piercing damage!" Lance felt a smidgen of triumph at his mosnter being able to overcome the defense of his opponent's monster.
The golden haired knight swiftly ran and brought his sword down, however the defending monster remained on the field, and Lance's life points increased.
"Now I'll have Gawain attack your Easter Gardna, and that will end my turn." Lance said as he awaited his opponent's next move.
