Much Ado Duel Monsters

Recommended Posts

I love Yu-Gi-Oh! I really do.
I have been playing this game since 2001, back when I got Starter Deck Yugi, and my little brother got Starter Deck Kaiba. Neo the Magic Swordsman was my favorite card, because he looked so cool.
I have seen this game evolve, and reach heights I never thought it could. Yu-Gi-Oh! is now a worldwide phenomenon. Thousands upon thousands of different kinds of cards are in circulation, and the number seems to keep growing. This franchise shows no signs of stopping...
And yet, even though I love it, I am finding a harder and harder time keeping up with strategies.
For some reason, the way my brain works is that these card combos don't seem to click unless I am shown the combo, or it is illustrated to me in text or in a video.
Example: My recent Chimeratech Fortress Dragon thread. I not only had no idea that it could be used on EITHER side of the field, instead of just your own, like I have seen it used in the anime, but I thought, and I still think, that the likelihood of you using it is slim. But I digress.
I just don't know what to do. I am annoying other people on this site with my seemingly stupid questions, even though they seem like perfectly legitimate questions to me. I feel like an idiot when someone finally explains the answer to be in a way I can understand. And I am now questioning how much I really love this game.
I am not stupid. I have an IQ of 139. I am a sophomore at an award-winning liberal arts college.
Now that something has happened to either me or the game that has caused this situation, what should I do about it?

ah seem that you're basically a visual type at most. Seeing demonstrations usually better than reading description, therefore unless we have seen demonstrations we have a tendency to rely on descriptions but sometime they aren't as 100% understanding if some terms aren't recognizable or so. In my case 95% of my educations are learned visually. so knowledge of something that isn't visual is what I'd utterly failed to understand at, Hence the reason I'm Deaf so i can understand what you mean. also there a little reasons to that it hard to multi-focus on several concepts on cards in the same that you would tend to finish each one by one. Normally this way you're be behind but it still help you to understand fully.

I guess this part of my speculation/observation/theory I'm still prolly inaccurate here as well as it's very late on my end

There is a guy that use to go to my locals that is just like you. Unlike others, when two cards are mentioned he doesn't understand how the combo works.

A few things I can suggest.

1. Go to youtube and type in what decks you want to know, or just duels, they may use some combos you like.

2. Who cares if you annoy some on this site? At least you're learning.

3. Watch duels on DN. I do when I do my homework. =3

So, if your mind don't click with combos unless you're blatantly shown them...
...sorry...
but you can't play the game properly.

Thanks for the positive feedback. You really know how to lift a girl's spirits.[/sarcasm]

mfw a good portion of players that top Regional events buy expensive decks and don't even know the combos or effects, but still win

How does that even BEGIN to work?!?

Thanks a lot. I don't really watch duels on DN, but I will start getting in the habit of doing so.

Sadly, this. In card games, theory is everything.

So I noticed.

You just gotta find a deck, and try it out.

Photon/SacredWings are fun decks, but the strategy is fairly easy. And, with Inzecters, it's a VERY straightforward deck.

Then there's Dark Worlds which speak for themselves, and Agents, and other such stuff.

Truth hurts. Personal experience.

But try what Legend Zero said, maybe it works.

It also took me a long time (8 years) to play properly, but I learned.

I easily got the Sacred strategy, and when Pollux came out, an easy way to get Pleiades entered my head. And I eventually realized that, in this Wind-Up Boat Rush deck I have on YCM, I can do all sorts of Xyzhenanigans, and I even added #17 and #20 to my deck.
I still don't get Inzecters, though, but that's a story for another day.
I can get some combos, but others elude me.

Boy, do I know that.
And I will try it.
But I have been playing for 10. Why do I still feel like a novice?

Interesting.

I'm a relatively strong player, but I am woefully incompetent at deckbuilding. That is to say, I don't really have the thought process to build certain decks, and some of my card choices are subpart in my earlier drafts. Some decks I also am incapable of wielding, a problem that's usually worse if I netdecked it.

Ironically, the decks I build that DO work tend to seem like anomalies. It's like some decks I make on my own are extremely powerful and good, but I can't possibly advise anyone on building a similar deck.

You can love the game and still be slow in processing things. I'm not really knowledgeable with some decks and cards. I got a lot of dueling experience from the World Championship games. I get to see a lot of strategies in action, learn rules and rulings, and make decks with a wide range of cards. DN has also helped me a little.

SacredWings aren't sacreds. AT ALL.

Inzecters are simple ._.

I used to know very little about the game, and I'm not stupid either (IQ 135, going to school for engineering). I didn't even know little things like you couldn't play quick plays from your hand during you opponent's turn, and I even thought I could use MST to negate effects. I never knew about some of the staples like the Solemns.

Try dueling on DN a little, and you'll learn as long as people point out your mistakes and show you things. It certainly helped me.

You're like me. Konami left fans of the original yugioh in the dust. The older game was so much more fun than it is now, Xyz and Synchros should never have been created (of course, rituals were kinda meh too). Konami keeps creating something extremely powerful, than bringing a few things up to match its power, than overpowering it again.

So something HAS happened to the game. Welcome to Konami's "Forgotten Fan" box. Its never going to go back to the way it was, and power creep is going to end up killing the game the season after Zexal, I guarantee it.

I hate when people b**** about the game because they liked DM.

Hey, guys, GX changed it a lot, too. You know. D-HEROes. CyDra. Etc.?

Xyz aren't even broken yet =.=

Fixed, and I hated GX. Everything Invasion of Chaos and after slowly began to decay the game.

No, it evolved the game, albeit breaking it.

I'm sorry, I don't find carbon copy Vorse Raider/Slate Warrior decks to be fun =/ At least there is SOME changes, now.

Yeah, like how the game has evolved into rock paper scissors.

not even trolling, he who goes first wins first. So many OTKs, FTKs, 20 special summons a turn.

Hell, if Konami bans brionac and stops making TCG exclusives, there'd be hope for the game. I doubt either happens.

Not the OP, she's trying to learn the game at least.

I still play the game. But w/e, siding with the majority means your right. I can't believe people aren't even willing to try and look at how broken rock paper scissors has become

This is exactly what I'm talking about. The game changed. Get over it, or get out. You can still complain about how broken a card is, but when you start going on about an entire mechanic you may as well leave, because the mechanic sure as hell won't.

EDIT: Btw, OP spelled Adieu wrong :P
