So today I was one of the selected to serve the Army for one year.

After going through 4 selections, I made the cut of 50 guys that will be part of my team on the Army. Nothing related to war though, just 2 hours per day to fulfill the "debt" with the Brazillian government. It's an obligatory service that everyone that passes by the selections need to do. Luckily my cousing and some friends of mine are in too, so it won't be so bad. But, the time is the issue. I'll need to wake up every 4:30 am to begin the daily activities there at 5:20, going until 7:20 am. Then I'll have to go to work until like 4 pm, then at 7:00 pm go to Uni and get home at 11:00 pm.

tl;dr: I can barely sleep.

So, discuss Army and if any of you want to serve, or if your country makes the Militar Service obligatory like mine.

Oh geez that's... going to be too much I fear.

Hope you survive.

I... er... well when I was suffering badly with depression I considered joining to... well I probably don't need to say why I wanted to join.

Think looking at how things are here compulsory national service would do some people some good.

Personally I feel like the UK should introduce conscription, but that's just me.

Otherwise (I'll just say this since it's related to the armed forces, just not specifically the army), I've contemplated joining the Royal Air Force or the Army Air Force in the past, but decided against wanting to since I'd rather pursue a less violent career. Although, I personally consider the RAF an option it's only for commercial pilot training if I can't get it anywhere else.

I have a friend who's also managed to be accepted as an army intelligence officer, or something like that, and he's getting paid through school and university to do it, so I can see the appeal for most parts of it.

It's just the soldiers that I don't always understand the reasoning for, but I'm not against them.

The USA can but they only do it during a war.

I'm scared. :\

And your schedule is missing like an hour or two of YCM time.

You should know in the USA; Everyone tries to change things, so don't expect it to stay that way; Obama already stated one to anonymous source that the Constitutun should be changed. Which is immoral and wrong.

So, in the future where the constitution can be changed at freewill, they'll try and make us pay for our tap water in the house, not just the well, but say, "Please insert 25 cents for an 8 oz glass of water" Thank you, enjoy.

So, right now we are safe, but if we get anyone worse in office; then were screwed.

So, another 20 years, imagine USA going to war with itself. Its inevitable as we speak

OP: I always hated the draft here in the US; Sure its meant to make us join forces during bad times; Then if we are suppose to band together; Then why don't you see all of us in their; to protect our country for whatever its worth; Because most of the citizens don't care about the free country until they realized they have lost it; and go back to there own place.

So, i hate the draft; mostly because its expressing the constitution but also nulls the 1st ammendment at the same time; luckily you don't get put in it until your 18. Which I agree with the minority, "If you can be drafted at age 18, You should also have the right to drink at the same age".

If your under 18 and have to go in, that is immoral IMO.

OT: I never want to have to be in the army. Ever. For any reason.

Considering Sweden's war history in the last 200 years...

Everyone should just join [s]Britannia[/s] the Marines. The Marines are obviously the best.
Except, if you knew anything about the Marines, they're the branch that has the most mental issues in their ranks because of the training and the mindset they try to force upon them =T

I'm an Army brat, just like my dad, and his dad were. Only difference? I came out too different from them, and have no intent of joining unless drafted x_X

My dad blasted Saving Private Ryan on the TV to show me how horrible war was... Not realizing I already didn't want to go in the army... x.x

Except, if you knew anything about the Marines, they're the branch that actually gets s*** done and is the only branch that gets to actually see the f'ing president and doesn't mope and whine about their training. My father was a Marine up until the time he became a Gunnery Sergeant, and then he resigned, and he never once complained about the training.

I know about all the branches. I've had family in each.

The marines have conditioning that is different from the others. Why do you think they get things done? They attempt to condition people into machines, basically. They don't complain because they're conditioned NOT to. Not being a conspiracy theorist, it just is. I've known more than a few people in the Marines, and they seem to have a harder time in everyday society than someone in the Army, Navy Airforce, w/e.

Ireland is like Switzerland except not as neutral, yes there are varying degrees of neutrality

Irish army? Has anyone ever heard of it?
Only the IRA... Which wasn't all of Ireland... And died off in the 1920's or something...

Close enough.
IRA was amazing in it's time but now it's a disgrace to our country. They think they're fighting for Republicanism and getting the North back but it's all corrupt bullshit.

I considered joining the army when I got out of high school, but I never did because I got a job right after.

I'd love to serve this country and respect the people that do, but in reality why work for a government that doesn't care about you like that? You know what I mean? I'd just be another faceless soldier in the eyes of the government.

National service, I feel, really doesn't need to be in the form of army service.

Forgive me, because I'm pretty ignorant about all of this, but giving people what is basically military training is not great. A country is nothing more than a piece of land, and the amount of patriotism involved in these things sometimes is painful.

Do I respect the soldiers who go out for their country? Pretty much, yes.
Do I respect what the soldiers do? Hell no. I believe Mikhail on YCM once said something along the lines of, "When we are celebrating the soldiers who come back from wars, we shouldn't. We should be turning our backs and spitting in the name of war." Or something.

Of course, war is not involved a lot of the time, but military service is not just some simple thing that I think of. It's complex, and people do it for tons of different reasons, and I think it's important to realise that when you do military service. I would go mad if I didn't have that consciousness about me sometimes. Compulsory military service is somewhat unfortunate, but c'est la vie.

National service in my opinion? Living your life.
True, true.

What I meant though was that while Ireland was neutral in WWII it kinda helped the US and the UK which was oh-so-shocking. Oh and as a fun fact De Valera was shunned after he payed his respects to Germany's ambassador after Hitler committed suicide, and nothing was said when he visited the US ambassador after FDR passed away, of course. The Irish public was anything but neutral. The same still stands today.
