[Oni Fist] An archetype by a member with no understanding of balance? Why not? [Set]

Recommended Posts

Some of you might have saw this one coming, others may not. But here we are, the archetype done and fully functional. Also, I may have gone a bit over the top when it comes to making cards, so OP'dness will be everywhere. So without further ado, here it is, the Oni Fist archetype. (Not actually an archetype, there's only 8 cards here)
And there you go, my latest set. This is a step backward compared to my previous set "Phantom Blasters" in terms of size, but then again, I wasn't looking for an archetype that can stand on it's own without support from existing decks. This deck is meant to be used in synergy with existing Warrior decks which can swarm a lot. The main support card, The Three Devas Of The Mountains is there to ease the summoning of the 3 Xyzs and manipulate the field using the three. The dynamic duo, Blue Oni and Red Oni is also there for Xyz summon. The set's main point is to either be a beatdown/stall deck or field control deck, depending on the other cards on the deck. The Xyzs have a trait of either not being to destroy monsters by battle (Ibara) cannot be destroyed by battle (Ibuki) or both.(Hoshiguma) I'm not intending this to be tier 1 or anything, I want to create a set that is fun to use but still competitive. But I don't know about that, so as usual, Rate, Fix my [s]f**k an Oni punched me in the bloody face OCG[/s] if broken and CnC gets a rep.

minor OCG fix: in hoshiguma's and ibuki's xyz materials it should be '2 Level 4 Warrior-Type monsters", monsters' types are always followed by -Type. also i think you switched ; and : in several points, but it really isn't the point.

hoshiguma: overall i think it's balanced, if anything i wouldn't really use it, LPs are often trivial, but i guess there are cheaperways to destroy cards than this, also it's a bit slow.

ibuki: 3000 LP is quite the damage for a non-direct attack so it's fine for the nuke effect. again undestructible by battle, i'm unsure on this one, it's true that destruction by battle is rarely seen in current meta, but you can always make it go kamikaze just to take battle damage and add counters.

ibara: if you manage to make this one undestructible by battle you're putting 2 oni counters per turn and hoshiguma could abuse that.

red oni: it needs to be only once per turn. if you have 3 red onis in your graveyard you can summon them all in the same turn, and that's instant xyz with 3 materials and no restrictions. also, you can tribute it for an effect countless times as you can always revive it. as it is, it's broken imo.

blue oni: this is better, nothing much to say.

sorry but i can't see the support cards, network problems, maybe i'll review later when i can see them.

Nearly all of them are fine... Except for Ibuki and Oni Sign. These two are ones that I desperately have worries about.

For one, let's start with Ibuki. What I don't like about Ibuki? It has a permanent negation ability that stops your opponent from ever playing again. You put in the card text "4: If your opponent activates a card effect, negate it.", which is stated to be permanent as the card lore says that it's not until the end of the turn. Reaaaaaaaaally broken, since it basically says you pay 2000 Life Points to win the game.

Oni Sign I don't like simply because it says that you can Xyz Summon a Rank 4 and mill your deck by two cards just for playing it. I honestly find that as bad / worse design than Tour Guide in some regards, especially considering the fact that these two can also make things like Heroic Champion Excalibur and Blade Armor Ninja. Yeah... Not liking it.

Its intresting to say the least. Whilst i will look at them in a lot more data, i think its a really good set. I don't think any card is overpowered, other than Oni strike for its double attack, turning all your monsters into blade armour Ninjas for free basically. That combined with The Three Devas Of The Mountains. But, again it would probably be hard to pull off.

I will do a more detailed review as you add cards, (if you are) and when i have the time to make it meaningful. After what i'm sure was a lot of effort, only going half hearted with the review of them would be unfair.

Durp. Bumping this.

P.S: Not trying to boast or anything, but for new members, this is how you build sets. Make sure your set follows one theme and is able to support that theme consistently, not place a bunch of random cards with similar names and/or pictures and calling it an archetype. But still, this is just a piece of advice given from a member with no understanding of balance. Feel free to follow it or not, but I wont be responsible if someone says your set sucks balls.

It's late at night and I'm drunk and tired, so excuse me for not posting my normal thousand-word reviews. I'm unsure about the archetype support in the form of Oni God Strike and Oni Strike. The former is decent, although outclassed by Typhoon and somewhat situational. The latter is also quite situational, and unlike the former requires you to be in control. I love the splashability and toolboxyness of Red and Blue Oni, along with their own support card that keeps the Onis (Onii? Onis? Onisiatii? What's the plural) flowing thick and fast. They remind of the Gadgets as thinners, although they require a bit of prep, which actually balances them fairly nicely. Three Devas has nice splashability, not to mention its lovely, albeit situational, additional effect. Victory Is One Strike Away! is useless, sorry.

The counter gimmick backfires quite badly on the Xyz monsters. Ibuki seems impractical, because the effects of the other two, not to mention the support, are likely to kill it off.

These cards are actually very well balanced.

I think that "Victory is one Strike Away" is sort of random, and doesn't seem to be the best of design to me. I mean, I can already see some crazy loopish things happening, get 25 counters, launch the trap, then everybody going crazy with burn. I am not saying it is OP'd, just that it doesn't seem to be a very well designed card. Also, the picture doesn't seem to fit the name/effect at all. Also, when I first read the title I thought for sure it was going to be "Victory is Oni One Shot Away." That bad pun is somehow your fault.

Also, regarding the Xyzs, I see extreme potential brokenness when used with the Alive Hero FTK/OTK decks from the OCG which are coming to the TCG... very soon. Ibara is essentially a super charged Blade Armor Ninja for the deck, and Kanaguma causes extreme chaos with bubbleman. Be careful when making Xyzs that support an already super OP'd deck. Having a double attacker that can morph into Kanaguma at a overall cost of essentially 1 warrior should it be accidentally Fiendish Chained is not exactly great.

In other words, when designing an archetype be careful with how your support cards will help other archetypes.

As for a fix, just in your Xyz Material Monsters, instead of saying "2 Level 4 Warrior-Type Monster" say instead "2 Level 4 "Oni" Monsters."

Really, I'm nitpicking though. The cards are really very good.
